I'm a non drinker so I always seem to pair my smokes with black coffee. I started to wonder if I'm doing myself a disservice by doing this. Could I be masking the flavors of my cigars considering coffee is a rather influential taste?

I'm inquiring because I'd like to better taste my cigars. They don't all taste like coffee, but I'm not sure I'm seasoned enough to distinguish the subtleties of cigars. And so I wonder if coffee is an impediment to taking in the raw flavor.

Thoughts?

There are certain cigars in my limited experience that i find go great with coffee such as trinidad reyes, san cristobal el principe, and monte 4. But i usually make myself a latte or cappuccino, rarely a black coffee. But of course that is my opinion.....everyone has different tastebuds, and as i constantly have sinus trouble i can rarely pick out subtleties in different smokes anyways.

Personally, I think coffee is one of the most complimentary beverages for cigars - for me coffee and tobacco share core characteristics,

for lack of a better way to put it.

If you are concerned, try drinking water with some of your cigars and see if you notice a difference.

More often than not do I drink coffee with my cigar and sofar it never had any negative effect on my cigar.

I love an iced coffee with a cigar, spicy and ceder-sweet cigars seem to compliment it the best. IE partagas, quintero.

If I have coffee with something more creamy with no spice eg a mag 46 then I find it takes something away from the cigar, hides the true flavours from view. But spicy and creamy = heaven for me!

I'm a avid coffee drinker with my cigars, regular coffee, espresso, capuccino, ect. I too feel that coffee is a great drink for a Cigar. When I'm smoking a new cigar for the first time, i might pair it with water just to be sure I get the full flavors from the cigar, but in the end, no noticible difference...

Sorry, off-topic.

...and as i constantly have sinus trouble...

Why not flushing your nose inside weekly with saltwater, I highly recommend it. There are certain "flushing-jars" available at pharmacies. After flushing you will taste better and I bet your sinus problems will disappear or at least decrease.

I love a morning cigar with a cup of coffee. I personally like an expresso cream and sugar, for me it brings out more of the creamyness of the smoke

Sweet! Good to hear all your opinions. I too have found that the combination is great. I guess I can always try without for a bit and see if the flavors are any different.

Thanks for the feedback, gents!

Thanks for the advice. I will give this a try

Well, this might be another something you all may inspire me to try. I've never considered drinking a strong or milky brew of coffee w/my smokes...afraid it would mask the flavor. My brother-in-law and smoking partner do it regularly. As mentioned, may try it eventually. I have learned and benefited from a few new ventures since joining this site 2 years ago. Thanks!

I quite frequently pair a cigar with coffee - they usually enhance each other.

+1 On that Claus, I am actually enjoying coffee more with the stix than alchohol these days. Been a fun game of trial and error pairing up coffee and stogies!! THe right match is a terrific taste..

Coffee is great with cigars!! Sprinkle in some salt to the grounds before you brew and the flavors will even bee amplified more!

That's an old trick I learned from my grandmother that I still use to this day!

I also enjoy coffee with my cigar especially in the morning with a minuto or petit corona. I actually just had an iced latte with a Dip 4 while reading some research papers. I have to say I prefer hot coffee over iced coffee and the more milk and less sugar that coffee has, the better it compliments most cigars.

An exception to the rule was a Ramon Allones Gigantes I once had with a very sweet flavored Starbucks coffee (hot) which proved to be an AMAZING pairing. I have one RAG from Czar that I won in a poker match that I'm waiting to pair with a similar coffee one day, hopefully it'll have the same effect it had a couple of years ago, otherwise I'll switch to plain old water again :)

If I'm having a cigar in the afternoon it is usually with an Americano or a double espresso. I think it is a great match.

I normally pair my cigars with a glass of ice cold coke. Not fussed if it's full fat or sugar free. THey seem to compliment each other nicely. Not sure what I'll drink now the weather is turning as I'm not allowed to smoke inside

I agree with the majority here in that coffee with cigars is quite good.

I myself never have a black coffee but rather a latte and I find that thus far, it does compliment a great many cigars.

Yesterday afternoon I enjoyed a latte with a Punch Royal Selection 11, was fantastic!

Well, today I had a Punch DC with my usual black coffee. I smoke the first ten minutes or so without drinking any and then began on my beverage. I really didn't notice much of a difference but I did enjoy the overall experience with the coffee but only because I enjoy coffee as it is.

Iced Coca~Cola or hot coffee here, depending on the weather.

Right now I'm working on the late harvest from Finica Matalapa in LOS Inmortales, EL Salvador. Roasted by Intelligentsia coffee and brewed in a Chemex pour over. Went quiet well with a Romeo Juliet Churchill. -Karl

Black coffee with a smoke is one of my favorites (if I'm not having an adult beverage  ). Also, not sure how many on the thread are familiar with Dr. Pepper, but it goes really well with cigars....so does a cold Diet Coke.

I think pairing a cigar with a drink whether it be a coffee, wine, beer or otherwise is a very good idea. I really enjoy certain coffee roasts with certain cigars. With that said for me it changes my smoking experince substantially enough compared to if I was just to smoke with out the drink.

I find drinks that are either too cold, contian too much sugar, or are strong in flavour affect my ability to define the subtle nuances in the cigar.
