Samantha Stosur stunned 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3 to win her first career Grand Slam title at the 2011 US Open.

With the victory, Stosur is the first Australian woman to win the US Open since Margaret Smith Court in 1973 and it is the first US Open championship for an Australian since Lleyton Hewitt won the men's title in 2001.

OZ Great result we knew you had it in you

Congrats to her!

Not to take anything away, but am I the only one who misses Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova? Thank the lord for Ivanovic at least :daydream:

stood next to kournikova once at a tournament. not unattractive but you'd find a hundred of her on any beach on the coast any weekend.

Don't pay much attention to the whole tennis racket, but I would like to congratulate my Ozzy friends for their victory. Apparently the whole "boyz in the hood" line of behavior is not going over very well with the people who run the sport either. They are talking of banning her!

I think sports are getting too politically correct but "the rules is the rules." As long as the rules don't change during the game, that is all a player of any sport should expect.

I've never been a big fan of the Williams sisters. Serena as been on a comeback tear, and it was looking like no one would be able to stop her. I kind of felt sorry for any woman who had to look across the court at her - Serena looks so strong and fast it must be like looking across the net at an NFL defensive back. I haven't followed women's tennis for a few years, and never previously heard of Stosur. When I saw her physique, I thought "Wow, here's somebody who looks like they might be able to go toe-to-toe with Serena." Loved watching her pull-off a great win on a huge stage!

...is about Gargett's age by now.

Speaking of Stosur (congratulations to her, by the way) she has incredibly muscular arms for a woman. Is she reputed to be straight, or is she another Mauresmo type?

This is something I can never understand in women's sports. If you're built like the proverbial brick shithouse and kick ass on court, rumous fly thick and fast that you're a lesbian. I mean, okay there are quite a number of lesbians on tour, but not all of them are. Maybe there is a propensity for these women to play sport? Who knows?

Though I gotta admit, I miss the days of the more feminine, ladylike figure of past women's tennis players. It just seems that to be at the top of your game, you have to be pumped like an East German weightlifter!

She lost her fitness a bit back due to illness I think so decided if she was to get back on top she has to become physicall strong....I personally don't like to women to have arms like men but to beat the Williams sisters she had to be a physcally strong...

what a great game and if anyone deserves this it is Sam , my God has that girl worked hard to get there
