What advice would you give in the selection of a 17 year old lads first car? Mine is nearing his drivers license shortly and he is a great kid who has studied his guts out and deserves a hand. At the same time I am not ponying up a hell of a lot of Moola.

1. So second hand.

2. No Turbo (they have restricted licences for first 2 years of license).

3. Under 180 KW of power

4. Budget AUD $10K USD $6K (your cars are a hell of alot cheaper).

Ben's requirements:

1. No hatchback

2. 4 seats

3 good styling

To No 3 I said good luck !

Throw some ideas at me as well as any golden rules/common sense I should know.

Cheers! ;)

i know its a hatch back, but the ladies will be all over him... meets every other criteria..Not to mention easy to see at night.. Mom will like that option.

My advice is to get something easy to drive with good visibility, and which has a good safety and reliability history. As for engine power, it's good to have enough power to get out of trouble if necessary, but not so much to really encourage reckless driving. Things like a used VW Jetta or Honda Accord come to mind. My first car was a Saturn SL2 sedan, which pretty much fit the bill. Good luck!

Same situation..... my son needs a beater to get to a college class and then back to high school.... we get some snow here.. I am looking at a Jeep Cherokee 4-8k

I think the best CARS for the buck on the market today are Subarus. He should get over the hatchback thing and get an Outback. They are badass. If not, they have some non-hatchback models too that will last forever.

Did Ken ever get a new car? Maybe he would pay you to take his old one off his hands. ;) Of course that might be more of a punishment for your boy.

Good luck and safe driving.

Honda Civic, very dependable and economical. My son is driving one with 150,000 miles on it (used to be mine), I'll take it back from him when he has saved up enough to buy a truck

I have owned this car for the last 15 yrs and it had been garaged and accident free. The overall car is in excellent condition. The upholstery is new under seat covers. Mechanically is very sound.

He picks up a 2009 Suburu Liberty today (will post his number plate when I find out). Gorgeous charcoal exterior, leather luxury pack interior. He offered to sell me his BMW("If it was a horse I would shoot it"....Mechanic) for Ben....but I graciously declined ;)

Yes and they even come with the optional rainbow sticker :covermouth:

I would just give in and get him a brand new Ferrari. You know he'll love it and I'm sure you will get to drive it on occasion! LOL

Here's a couple of my picks:

2002-2003 Alfa Romeo 156 JTS or an earlier model 156 V6 (both manual, don't go for the Selespeed)

2001-2002 Audi A4

2004 Volvo S40

And of course the bucketload of used Falcons and Commodores that litter every dealership across the land.. but who wants the same car as everyone else? Though they are the ultimate workhorse that'll go several hundred thousand kms before dropping dead, and parts are dirt cheap. But if you're feeling nostalgic, there's a 1963 Holden EH Special going for $5500 with only 55000km on the clock.

Personally, I'd go for the Alfa. I used to have a 2002 Alfa Romeo 156 Monza (bought it just before the JTS was released) and it was fantastic to drive around. Styling was great, and with the hidden rear door handles, it looked a little like a coupe.

I'd probably something in the lines of a vw jetta, that was my first car and I loved it, looks good, reliable...the only down part for you as a dad is there is too many aftermarket products for jettas and civics that can turn them into rockets

How about a Mazda 3. Stylish, practical, reliable, 4 door, and great reviews from the auto mags.
