El Presidente Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 These are our results for the period 30 June 2009 to 30 June 2010. For those that tried to pick the results in the other thread, check your answers and let me know if there is a winner. No 1 Ramon Allones Specially Select I think that will be a surprise to many. However the quality through this period was very good and we were fortunate enough to have sourced some remarkable examples. The Rass has a very loyal following. It finds the line between Medium bodied and richness. No 2 Bolivar Royal Corona Another surprise. Our top two cigars are outside of the stable of what Cuba classifies as the "Global Brands". medium bodied, complex but lighter in the main than the RASS. No 3 Partagas Serie D No 4 The only surprise is that it didn't finish above 1 and 2. We have a discerning membership! No 4 Montecristo Number 2 The king of Piramides in terms of sales. It is the cigar in which we have more "seek and send requests" than any other. Number 5 Cohiba Robusto the Robusto's take out 4 of the top 5 positions and this is one of my favourite cigars of all. A staple in most humidors if only a few sticks. Number 6 Bolivar Belicoso Finos Has had some tough times of late but still one of the most sought after cigars of all. had a cracker yesterday afternoon which reminded me why. Number 7 Partagas Shorts Old faithful. Seldom lets anyone down....like the faithful dog at your side on the porch. Number 8 Montecristo Number 4 This is a great result for the Monte 4. Our membership base is slightly different. They purchase cigars because they know what they are looking for. We are not airport duty free and yet the 4 holds its own. The past 12 months in terms of flavour and quality have been excellent. Number 9 Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Number 2 In terms of consistency of construction and flavour my top Robusto of the past 12 months. Remarkable comeback for a cigar which was for a number of years stuck in the wilderness. Number 10 H. Upmann magnum 46 Another comeback King. The magnum 46 has a great loyal following who have come back to it in spades with the increase in quality and consistency. Number 11 Juan Lopez Seleccion Number 2 The cat got out of the bag in the last year as to how good these cigars currently are. They have moved from the bottom end of the top 50 to the top 12...and climbing. No 12 Partagas 898 Varnished To me one of the finest cigars out of Cuba today. A constant in my rotation and one that seldom lets me down. It has poise and richness with the occasional ruthless mongrel edge I enjoy. So that is our top 12. Keep in mind we are a specialty merchant generally dealing with established zealots and developing zealots who are passionate to learn. our top 12 would be different from the run of the mill tobacconist who would sell a shite load of R&J 1/2/3 tubes etc. It is not our game. The Sir Winston was the only Churchill to make the Top 20 (15). The only sub 40 gauge cigar to make the list was the Monte Especial at 17 (my favourite cigar). Your thoughts?
El Presidente Posted July 23, 2010 Author Posted July 23, 2010 RASS #1?Are you F...ing kidding me!!!!! i thought that would surprise. Month to month our number 1 or 2 selling cigar.
lemmycaution Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 It doesn't really surprise me that the RASS is number one, I just haven't had any luck with them lately. I know that's the reason why Wicky is so angry.
Bartolomeo Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I have never had good luck with RASS, BBF and PSD4.........Wish I did for as popular and cheap they are Maybe one day they will come around for me Thanks for sharing Rob, always appreciate your thoughts Bart
OZCUBAN Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 When the RASS, BBF and PSD4 are on song there is no cigar better IMO,(well maybe a couple ) Lets hope the quality keeps this upward trend OZ
frenchkiwi Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 happy to say that a box of '08 RASS i got from czar is the best young cigar in the humidor. in fact it will probably never make it to adulthood, let alone old age ;-)
jsd Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 That is a little surprising to see the RASS at the top. I thought a robusto would be #1 but I would've guessed the PSD4. The top 3 are in order of price though. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.
ksblazer Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 While it may have to do with me not being much of a Hoyo fan. I'm suprised that the Epicure No.2 made that list. Also suprised that the Boli PC's didn't make it. As they seem to be quite popular. In fact as popular as the TPC's and PC's are on this forum. I'm kind of suprised that only the Party short and the Monte No.4 made that list. I've always heard that the Robusto is the most popular size. That still holds true. Rob would you mind showing the top 20 list? I'm curious which cigars placed 13-20?
bunburyist Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Biggest surprise for me is the CoRo in there. Almost double the price of the RASS and most other robustos... I figured most people would have some, but not that they'd be a regular purchase. What recession?!
bunburyist Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 ...and...pretty surprised by the RASS being no. 1. Probably not even in my top 5 robustos. Trini T, CoRo, VRF, BRC and Epi 2 all beat it for me. JL2 and PSD4 on a par. Funny how tastes differ huh.
Lanthor Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 This list doesn't suprise me at all. If I were to give someone new to the hobby 10 cigars to cut thier teeth on, 9 of the 10 would be from the top 10 on this list. I pretty much stick to sub 50 RG Cohibas and HU's anymore, but this list represents the staples in my opinion.
samb Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I think these results speak for themselves... RASS is an outstanding cigar!!! TEB did some great things for them...
cigcars Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 *Well I would have lost this contest. I'm shocked the Cohiba Siglo's and Monte Edmundos didn't make the list...especially some of the limited editions.
El Presidente Posted July 23, 2010 Author Posted July 23, 2010 Lise has left for the day and she has the top 20 but no problem releasing them when I am back from the warehouse next week. The top 12 certainly doesn't represent my personal top 12 but numbers don't lie. Every one of those cigars on the list deserve to be there because people purchase them with their hard earned money. They obviously bring something to the table for the vast majority of the Habanos community and I can't argue with that. Robusto's certainly dominate the world in terms of total dollars. Next are mareva's which actually beat (just) Robusto's in actual number of units sold.
typeapositive Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Of the "global" marcas, only the RYJ and Piedras are left out of the top 12. That pretty much sums up the quality of the RYJ`s as of late.
dicko Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 A lot of people were close to the list!! I thought RASS and PDS4 would go top 3. It would be interesting to see how the FOH list racks up against a global list, I reckon we have some better quality stuff in there. great exercise!
anacostiakat Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Really not too surprised by this. Does seem like a preponderance of robustos. The robusto is a size that fits many people's time frames. It is a good lunch time size or later in the evening. Before or after dinner.
BobLobLaw Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Very interesting. I think it is telling of the type of shop and customers Czar generally sells to as Prez indicated. Solidifies in my mind that the cigars sold here are to connoisseurs and not being pushed to buy whats "popular." Kudos to you.
SethLG Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I agree with dicko on the comparison of FOH vs. Global list but overall not too surprised, RASS being #1 is, but it is a great cigar.

Without any lack of respect for the tastes of others... "Turrrn out the lightssss... the party's over! Poor Chuck must be rolling over in his grave! -Piggy
khomeinist Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Lol. Because your party is THE party. Lots of excellent cigars not on the list. I regularly smoke only 3 of these (Party Shorts, BRC, and 898). Cohiba CE, Fundadores, PLPC, Boli CE, El Principe, LGC M D'or 2, and of course Partagas SDC, Dip 4, etc..... Where are you???
olotti Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 A little surprised by the order but not the list in itself. I would have thought the top 4 would have been PSD4, BRC, RASS, CoRo. But I think the RASS is a great cigar and a great value especially when compared to the CoRo, its a more monitarilly approachable cigar which then appeals to more people because they can afford it, and it doesn't hurt that the last 4yrs have put out some outstanding quality. Interesting list, good to see the 898 up there, one of my personal favs.
jman Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 not a suprise to me either. The BRC LRE 09's are smoking nice. Let them sit for a month and bam, tasted amazing. The BRC is one of the worlds great cigars.
