BigGuns Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 aaah! beat me to it. I just saw this on Yahoo and am curious to hear what our pals over hear think about it.
Guest rob Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Call me insensitive, or a racist... but this is political correctness gone mad. This is the kind of bullshit that pisses me off.... Just 6 months ago there was a Hollywood 'blockbuster' called Tropic Thunder... To quote Wiki: Robert Downey, Jr.as Kirk Lazarus : an Australian multiple Academy Award-winning method actor, Lazarus had a controversial "pigmentation alteration" surgery to darken his skin for his portrayal of the African American character Sergeant Lincoln Osiris. Lazarus refuses to break character under any circumstances while filming and only speaks in his character's Black English, much to the annoyance of African-American co-star Alpa Chino. Lazarus's Satan's Alley faux trailer, about two *** priests in an 18th-century Irish monastery, parodies films such as Brokeback Mountain and Downey's own scenes with Tobey Maguire in Wonder Boys.
maalouly Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I can understand how Americans can get offended with the clip. Unfortunately in Australia we never had skin colour problem and we have more then 140 different race living in the one country. No offence is meant to everyone who isn't australian but we are one of the very few countries who enjoy the luxury of equal rights and opportunities. It makes me proud to be an Aussie and to our American friends and reports who are calling us racist I invite you down and experience our way of life!
El Presidente Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I have never watched the show. Nice to know Harry likes watching Oz television
Guest rob Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I never watched it either... but Political Correctness, for it's own sake, drives me raving mad.
laficion Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I invite you down and experience our way of life! OK,, Elie, At what time do we start dining & drinking & smoking And telling nasty jokes .
El Presidente Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 keep in mind we are rednecks and wankers here
Morientes50 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Their Aussies not Americans. How can we expect a different country/culture to have the same reaction as us? Black face is only offensive in an American context because white actors used to put on the face to stereotype blacks. They portrayed them as generic buffoons rather than individuals. So its not just a white guy portraying the pres. or something but a generic stereotype. Aussies don't have our history. Its idiotic to create a big fuss. (I know its mostly the media stiring the pot but Harry probably should have played it down)
maalouly Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 OK,, Elie, At what time do we start dining & drinking & smoking Right about now guy lool
Morientes50 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 p.s. I meant president Obama...not our pres
Ken Gargett Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I can understand how Americans can get offended with the clip. Unfortunately in Australia we never had skin colour problem and we have more then 140 different race living in the one country. as for the show, i didn't see it but it sounds as though it was poor taste and ill conceived. but i suspect because our only real experience with black face was the 'black and white minstrel' show from many years ago that was televised here, the dills putting it together didn't twig. just idiots. have met daryl summers and he comes across as a thoroughly decent bloke (mad keen wine lover) so not sure who was behind it. i gather he apolgised on air immediately so assume not him and one would hope an on air apology would have gone a long way to calming it quickly but there must be nothing to write about this week. mind you, it is on the network that gives us that moronic pig, sam newman, so who knows? as for the suggestion we don't or at least have never had a colour problem here in australia, i wish it were true but sadly, i think that is a million miles from the reality.
El Presidente Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 p.s. I meant president Obama...not our pres ...although I can work up a hell of a tan I have never watched the show because it is crass and a style of humour that has never appealed. It appeals to some so who am I to judge. If people believed everything they saw on a TV commedy skit then all blacks are hoodlum crack dealers, everyone from North Carlonina owns a banjo and a trailer, all Aussies are beer swilling red necks, all French are surrender monkeys, the Britts are alergic to soap, the Spanish are all incompetent waiters and the Italians never go to work during the day because rhey run their mafia operations at night
Guest rob Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 and the Italians never go to work during the day because rhey run their mafia operations at night Actually, I play golf during most days.
El Presidente Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Actually, I play golf during most days. Budda Bing!
Wil Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 as for the suggestion we don't or at least have never had a colour problem here in australia, i wish it were true but sadly, i think that is a million miles from the reality. Agreed.
sje Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Agreed totally it is not racist and not meant to be Racist, just humor (poor or otherwise) i am lucky to have travelled to many places in this world, and mostly Aussies are the least racist. Now talking about Steriotypes, Rob and Rob please leave all Greeks out of any steriotypical insinuation, lets just stick to the Tricky Italian and the incompetent Spanish. (oh and the French are not simply surrender monkeys but rather Cheese eating Surrender Monkeys) Spiro (the Golden Greek) (1/4 Greek anyways) s
Fuzz AI Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 as for the show, i didn't see it but it sounds as though it was poor taste and ill conceived. Apparently, it was a re-performance of a skit by the same group from 20 yrs ago when they were Uni students on Red Faces. as for the suggestion we don't or at least have never had a colour problem here in australia, i wish it were true but sadly, i think that is a million miles from the reality. Too true, unfortunately. We only gave Aborigines the rights to vote in 1962 and discrimination laws against Aborigines eventually fazed out by 1967.
Kangaroo495 Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Isn't there a saying that goes something like "Emulating is the highest form of compliment"? There you go.
Warren Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 I can not for the life of me understand why they resurrected a show that stopped being funny more than 20 years ago. I refuse to watch that idiot Summers. He is the only one who thinks he's funny and it pisses me off that the world has formed the opinion that we find this kind of infantile rubbish amusing. I'm with Harry on this one.

I wasn't defending the show, Warren. I agree. It is bloody hopeless. I was simply saying, that I hate how the world always has the voice of political correctness in earshot... and its never the group that is being defended making the protest - It's always some do-gooder making it on their behalf.

No I understand your point Rob and I agree with you. The whole political correctness thing gets my back up too.
Ken Gargett Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 No I understand your point Rob and I agree with you. The whole political correctness thing gets my back up too. for all the years that it ran, i only ever saw two short bits and must admit that they were well done. there was the famous '12 pets of christmas' which was genuinely sensational with all the kids. the other was when geelong lost a premiership and sumers was trying to interview a few of the losing players from the studio via trevor marmalade at the post game function - in those days, technology was not what it was. he'd say something to marmalade who would pass it on and then the players would comment. he gave usual commiserations - so marmalade says to a couple of huge and very unhappy cats, 'daryl says you were crap and deserved to lose'. sumers tries to save it and wants them told he is a supporter and all the fans were proud of them. marmalade says 'daryl says you all should be dropped and he is cancelling his membership' and so it went. the geelong players are ready to rip someone's head off. it was very funny (sumers told me years later when i met him that he had absolutely no idea marmalade was planning it). but that is all i have ever seen. and i suspect it will never see the light of day again.

I completely agree! The show sucks BUt the political correctness of it all is over the top. Surely there are bigger issues in the world where perhaps people can stick their nose into anothers business which 'IS' a real issue which would be deserving of the world media, not some, Aussie, 'Red neck' show!
