scinmyheart Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I currently have a box of #1's that are somewhat tight and a little bland, but that's been my only bad experience...I love the flavor profile
Habanos2000 Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Fair call. Same thing for me and Upmann. Never had one which really hit the spot. Weird. I was never a big Upmann fan until the '08 M50's and M46's. I highly recommend those, they made a believer out of me.
Bartolomeo Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Last night I had a Dip #1 from 2001 that I rated a 9.15/10 It was my first and only Dip to this point and thanks to my friend who made it happen I would be curious to see how a Dip #1 08 or 09 would compare to the aged 01 I smoked? Bart
greenpimp Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I have a box of 2001 #2s that is mundane at best. However, everything else I've had, especially recently, has been stellar. My Dip3s are ampng the best coronas I have, and I have already gone through 1.5 boxes of #2s from 2007 and 8. As noted, extremely rich and flavorful and STRONG. I think Dips have made a serious comeback since 06. Sometimes it is not an individuals taste that is to blame, just bad luck with some off years.
harryleech Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Did a cigar review yesterday with Ayala and without Ken, most enjoyable afternoon. The video will be up later in the week, but we tried the Diplimaticos No 4, and it was sensational. While Ayala is away I have tried three other Dips today and every one of them was great. It got me thinking today does Diplimaticos make a bad cigar or has anyone had a bad Dip? Love the number 2, beginning to love the number 4. Great marca, very under-rated and something I need to buy more of. Damn you for reminding me of that!
perfectform Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 The 4's kill the Montes. This has been my experience as well...I'm excited to have a box on the way!
BigGuns Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I really enjoy the 4s, as well. I've got a 10-box of '08 Monte 4s that I was going to break into shortly. I hope this and the video review of the Monte 4s don't subconsciously ruin my smoke! Thinking happy thoughts....
dizedean Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I smoke a lot of PC's. The Dip #4 is part of the regular rotation. I have never been disappointed. It serves as a change of pace. BTW I enjoy the Monte 4 very much. It has taken a bit of a beating on this post, so I must be the only one who defends them. They have been consistently good for me with an occasional excellent smoke. DSS
MIKA27 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Last Saterday we had a meeting with our cigar club in the city of Nimesand on the cigar memu for the evening we had a Partagas EL Serie D5, 2008, Wow, what a powerhouse of a smoke, we were all surprised by It's wonderful flavours & taste. I was starting to feel bad because I had choosen a Diplomaticos No. 2, 2008 for the end of the meal and seeing how the Partagas stole the limelight at the start of the night, I said to myself that the Diplo would not hold It's own for an after Dinner cigar. Well, It seemed as if the Gods were with me because this Diplomaticos No. 2 were just fantastic, Rich, oily, great earthy and coco tastes with dark coffee, beautiful notes of leather all in a excellent balance that left everyone in a daze, Wow, what a surprise but most of all, what a treat. Who said that this mama was a bad stick ? LOOK AGAIN ,brother, they are very close to being one of the best Habanos at the moment. Well stated Laficion! The Dip #2's are one of the greats that I too have stocked in my humidor. I have never had a bad one as yet and 'Touch wood' I never will. Is it true, I heard rumors, they are made in the same factory as Montecristo's?
Van55 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Diplomatico = the poor man's Montecristo. So they used to say. In my experience Diplomaticos are far more consistent and consitently good than their Monte counterparts.
ksblazer Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 However, everything else I've had, especially recently, has been stellar. So they used to say.In my experience Diplomaticos are far more consistent and consitently good than their Monte counterparts. Right on! I agree Smithy, some of my favorites as well. The Diplomatico line is a consistent winner in my book. When piramides suffered their taste performance slump around the turn of the century, the D-2 suffered as well. The D-1 and D-3 will be sorely missed! I know... they didn't sell. I was the only guy who bought them. I don't want to hear it! -Piggy
shrink Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 The D-1 and D-3 will be sorely missed! Indeed! (But less so for those of us provident enough to have stocked up.)
gdmw Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Have a box of #1 from '05 on hand. Never had the #1 before, but love the #5. Do you guys think I should go for it? hove do you think the #1 compare to the #5?
PigFish Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 The D-1 is clearly a standout cigar. Perhaps not as rough or pungent as the #5 generally but much depends on vintage and the overall individual production variance. I believe the D-1 to be sophisticated, sometime delicate, making it an odd choice for me but overall capable in it's own right. It is truly one of my favorite cigars. -
daboose Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Boy, after reading this thread who could refuse. I need to add these to the humidor.

I tink I will jump on this one. It wont be long before they are all gone from the regular market I guess shame on you Habanos s.a!
PigFish Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Given the financial wherewithal and the knowing that some group of boobs has decided that the cigar did not make them enough money, or was simply too good for the money it made them, I would own 100 more boxes than I own now. It is not too late for you, pick yourself up a box or two, I think you will be happy with them. I have not given a D-1 to anyone who has not enjoyed the smoke. Best of luck on your quest. - Piggy
bassman Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Smoked two more #2s since my last post- from 06 & 08. Still don't like this cigar. Just not enough flavor. Still loving the #4 & 5 and stocking up accordungly.
stargazer14 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I have only had the #4's, and wasnt impressed at first, but now after a few months I'm starting to like this cigar.

android Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I think the line is spectacular...and the loss of them will be sad.
