Ken Gargett
Have been looking at a range of different pyramides of late so doing an all-in-together review. Overall, perhaps not as excited as I thought I might be. Montecristo No 2 The smell cold was a slight ash-like character. Quite bizarre and not overly enticing. That aside, the appearance was quite typical for a Monte 2, a pleasant milk chocolate. There was an immediate nutty and roasted coffee note and roasted salty nuts. Spice, some rich notes, orange rind and there was again, the tiniest touch of the ash-like character, this detracted. This persisted throughout but the main drawback was a most uneven burn and little I could do altered or rectified that. While the last third got a little warm, there was none of the harshness of youth. This had been a single stick in the humidor so could have had a few years. Still couldn’t right the burn. The finish picked things up. Nice nutty finish and just a flick of mint at the end. Fair. This wasn’t a bad Monte 2 but also not a great one. 88. Hoyo LE Pyramide 2003. The last from the first box. I get excited just looking at these. Rich, dark wrapper, construction looks immaculate. The smell cold here was a slight mulch note, some earthy tones and a mix of dark chocolate and old leather. The dark choc notes developed quickly when lit. the flavours were rich - toast and nuts. The burn was slide rule perfectly even and reasonably slow. The draw was good. A complex smoke, it built the dark choc notes and developed some roast meat, hot tarmac and bacon hints. The power built over the cigar and was quite strong by the end. Again, nothing puts this in the typical Hoyo mold but a terrific smoke. These are still on the way up. No rush. While wonderful now, they have much more in them. It is worth noting that this was good but far from the best. The previous one a few months back I had rated at a stunning 95. This one - 91. Partagas P2 This offered a nice biscuity, mushroomy, earthy smell before lit. The P2 always looks good but a closer look at the foot of this one suggested that it was loosely packed. This was not a good sight and didn’t augur well. Opened with an immediate rich and toasty note with a strong slightly burnt toast character. Sure enough, the draw was a little too free and easy. Did have lots of flavour and moved into strong roasted nuts, rich and powerful but this needs time to settle. These really need time. The flavours and the cigar itself all calmed down nicely in the second half. The problem with the draw came and went, which was a detracting factor here. The flavours in the last third morphed into a little citrus, earth and nuts. I was quite excited by these when first released. Lots of potential and pending excitement. Problem is I’m starting to wonder if they’ll ever swing around or just head down the same track and never quite sort themselves out. I think some of my early scores may have reflected a little too much potential and not enough reality. Perhaps they just need a long, long time. After all, even the oldest P2's are only just over two years old. The jury, for me, is out. 87? Cohiba LE Pyramide 2006 Pulled this out for the State of Origin Series win. They have a great appearance; deep, dark brown. Construction looks immaculate. Smelt cold, hints of chocolate and old leather. Actually, they both look and smell like an old footy. When lit, an immediate richness, full-flavoured and spice tones. Dense smoke. It was immediately obvious that this was a smoke with a very, very long future. I’ve had a few of these now and am convinced that it is one of the great LE’s and that it has a massive future. That said, this one was a little different, much more muted than the others, though still excellent. Tight, very young, has power but the flavours were a little restrained, but just a function of youth. I will be putting the rest away for a few years at least now. The others had been more open but if this one any indication, they are a waste now. The burn was perfectly even and very very slow. Everything screams greatness when they grow up. Balanced flavours with some earth, spice, new leather and a flick of honey. Increased in the last third. Very tight. 92 but worth noting that this is a few points less than where i have rated every other one. And this has massive upside.
genevapics
Nice job, Ken. A lot of folks feel the 2006 Cohiba EL has great potential. I have not had one, so I can't say for sure... The Partagas PSP2 has always been a firecracker, loaded with spice. I have tried some '06 examples that have been very good. As far as the Montecristo, the 2006 version have been stellar, IMO. Everyone of mine were loaded with notes of sweet, milk chocolate, bean and coffee flavors. Delicious.
wp2
Thanks Ken, great reviews! My P2s are also resting, as are my 06 Monte 2s.
Colt45
I'm with you re the PSP2 - I'm not sure how these will pan out.
Mike33
Nice set of reviews Ken!! I believe all of those cigars will be classics in 5-6 years. To me, the P2 has a good chance of being the best Piramde that Habanos produces. It has all the makings of an outstanding aged cigar.
olotti
Great reviews Ken, I have some PSP2's from ENE 05 and the last one I tried 6 months or so ago was stellar but there were a few duds in between then from that box and my MAY05 box which leads me to believe that after 2 years these start to come around but more age will only help. Ginseng
Thanks very much for the reviews, Ken. I am a bit puzzled by the PS2 as well. Early specimens were very good, but then... Wilkey
stever
Nice reviews. May be time to fire up a Hoyo. The PSP2s I've had from late '05 and early '06 have been very good so far.
El Presidente
Great work Ken Mate, I am a little concerned about your "Hot Tarmac" flavour description on the Hoyo Pirimide. I know they were doing roadworks recently outside your present residence....but I didn't know things were that tough that you have resorted to eating the stuff

El Presidente
OK Romeo....You hold a girlfriend for 4 weeks between now and June 30 next year....and I will pay up a cab of SLR DC. Just a few rules: 4 weeks to be consecutive. Cubans don't count. Mother and family members don't count. As a "Couple" you must attend one function (dinner/lunch) with Macho, Myself and Des. Note...we can pick hookers a mile away.

Consensual sexual relations. A female who wants to be with him because she finds him charming, sexualy appealing, intellectually satisfying.
