El Presidente Posted May 4 Posted May 4 This series to explore whether a particular cigar is humidor worthy. Cost these days is an issue for many so let's see if we can highlight some absolute standouts. This should particularly assist those new to the cigar world. To be fair, most of the cigars we have featured to date have scored exceptionally well. Surprisingly well! Scoring is: 1-3 (Poor) 4-6 (Average to good) 7-10 (very good to excellent) Use the Poll. I think that my two favourite Hoyo de Monterrey blends right now are those of the San Juan and the Rio Seco. In terms of a blend that is an outlier in the Hoyo Line-up, the Rio Seco wins hands down. What a beautiful blend it is. Hoyo cream is always present throughout but it is accompanied by lashings of milk chocolate with hints of cedar and gingerbread. Hoyo de Monterrey Rio Seco 56 × 140 mm (5½″). Let's kick off the discussion!
Popular Post westg Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 A superstar cigar. Love the size, love the blend. 100 + notes a cigar in Oz so I don't smoke as many as I used to. 🥹 7
Popular Post chasy Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 Agreed with the polling above. It’s basically a 10/10 on everything, except it’s a touch too pricey. I think if it was 10-15% less expensive, it’d be properly priced. 6
Popular Post JohnS Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 I have to agree. A nice cigar, when I have one on occasion, that is a touch too expensive to contemplate replacing the quarter of a box I have left. 6
Popular Post Li Bai Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 I've been lucky enough that those I've tried weren't as good as many of you find them to be. Now it's a pretty expensive fatty...I won't chase them. 5
Popular Post cnov Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 Straight down the middle on all counts for me. I have 5 left from a 10 box that I'm not too fussed about. The last couple I had were fairly open on the draw, was hard to burn them without them getting too hot. 56 rg is too big for me. 6
Popular Post Chibearsv Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 I think they are tasty mild cigars. Agree with others that current pricing is more than I'll pay to re-supply, but that's true with most CC for me. I don't find that they have a defining flavor profile except that they are typical Hoyo. I'm currently working through a 2020 box that are smoking great right now. 8
Popular Post Ford2112 Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 These tick a lot of boxes for me. A bit big on RG. Pricing goes without saying, but if I can grab a couple singles of these here and there I will. I love this blend though, this and San Juan are my two favorite HdM. 6
Popular Post Mike Mecklenburg Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 I was able to get a couple of boxes when I was in Cuba (ESL July 2019 and TRU July 2019) and really enjoy the flavors. It's the only cigar that I tasted cashews. Ten on all and the only bad thing that I can say is the fat 56 ring gauge, but that's a personal thing. Can't speak for the current crop. 5
Popular Post Joeyjojo Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 I think I echo most people's opinion on this one - Lovey cigar, just a bit pricey for what it is. 5
Popular Post Duder Posted May 4 Popular Post Posted May 4 Admittedly limited experience with them but have loved them so far. Broken record from me I know but I feel in a 52 ring these would be a staple. I just don’t often reach for 54+ fatties. The San Juan beats it easily for me both in size and flavor. Great blends both and I just wish they were thinner. 6
riderpride Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Love 'em. As mentioned, they are pricey, but it's one of the few that I break my rg rule for due to the overwhelmingly pleasant ginger ale notes. Cheers! 4
