Cigars at work

Being in construction, having a morning cigar before an owner's meeting (every 2 weeks at 10am) is enjoyable and I have some owners indulge right along with me.

All good.

But the moment I break out the bourbon they all go nuts.

As a late teen I was working for my dad at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. HUGE convention center holding 10’s of thousands of people, predominantly Japanese. During the 16 hour days on the floor I had become friends with one of the young reps from Japan, who everybody knew as Mick. The evening before the last day, the man that I knew as the CEO of Pioneer Electronics and was referred to as “Mr. Yamada-San” offered to bring us exhausted floor staff some drinks. I asked my newfound friend how to thank him in Japanese. So Mick said “Domo Arrigato, bingy-bongo-yada.” Ok, got it!

Mr. Yamada-San, who looked to be about 85, personally comes back with a tray of Cokes and begins to hand them out. When he gave me mine I PROUDLY presented my new Japanese phrase. Mr. Yamada-San looks at me with absolute shock and horror, then begins to laugh hysterically! Anyone who spoke Japanese within earshot was also laughing uncontrollably. Being totally humiliated and somewhat angry, I cornered Mick and asked him what he had me say.

”No, no! I told you to say thank you very much for the cold drink. Domo Arrigato, bingy-bongo-yada. What you said was, Domo Arrigato, bongo-yada-bingy which means Thank you very much, I just sexually molested my sister!”

Within minutes, every Japanese in that convention center that walked past the Pioneer booth would stop, point at me and start laughing.

I’ll trust Google over Mick any time.😡
