Jimi no contest. I’ve been obsessed with him since I was a teen. Love Clapton too but Hendrix reigns supreme.

Jimi. Reason being is 1. Eric Clapton would say the same- "You never told me he was that f--king good!". Following their meeting, Clapton remarked, "He walked off, and my life was never the same again," admitting Hendrix forced him to rethink his own, and Cream's, musical direction.

2. He changed the world of guitar and music, and nothing after would ever be the same. So as innovator, impact and influence I am going Hendrix. His production values still hold up.

That said I love Blind Faith and Cream, but Lay Down Sally? Gtfoh lol. Besides everything Peter Greene did, in my mind, stands head and shoulders over Clapton if you ask me.

i went clapton but i think i might not be on the side of history. i went with him simply because one of the greatest concerts i ever saw was clapton at the royal albert hall (even better, back in the days when i had my own box - long story and compelling evidence that the better one knows the system, the more fun one has). 

clapton had a few special guests (not sure they were that special), but what he also had was mark knopfler on lead guitar and phil collins on drums for the entire night. what a concert!! 

one thing i will say without fear of contrradiction is that anyone who went no contest between these two is kidding themselves. 

i would have loved to have seen hendrix but before my time. i did have an apartment in london from which one could look over and down into an apartment across the road which was apparently jimi's at one stage. had a swirling keyboard design on the carpet. some claimed it was wheere he died but i think that is not true.

Clapton is living proof that someone can be both great and overrated at the same time.

He was the goat of blues guitar in a rock and roll setting. Pure heart. Great tone. Those early Mac albums and the stuff from the Bluesbreakers is all time.

Jimi Hendrix, no question. Even Eric Clapton has been quoted as saying that Jimi was the greatest. Eric is No.2 and Jimmy Page is No.3 most influential guitarists of the 20th century.

Funnily enough, if Jimi were alive today, and he was asked if he was the greatest guitarist, he'd say "no!". If Jimi were to be asked who was the greatest musician of his time, he'd say, "Bob Dylan" without even blinking an eyelid. One wouldn't think that Bob Dylan influenced Hendrix's music but there you go!

Clapton is a legend, and I have always loved his stuff, especially with Cream. Hendrix is just a different beast, though. He utilized the guitar in ways that astounded even Clapton, melding Blues with psychedelia in a way that sounded like his literal voice was coming through the guitar. More importantly to me, he lived to craft soundscapes in the studio, pushing the barriers of what rock music could be. His creativity and ingenuity dwarf that of so many others. Others did similarly, and here I’m thinking immediately of Jimmy Page, but perhaps not to the extent of “newness” that Hendrix did.

I reluctantly choose Clapton for no other reason than the body of work is so extensive. I've spent far more time listening to Eric than Jimi. 

Also, being a Joe, do you have any idea how many times I've been asked where am I going with that gun in my hand?

Love them both, slight nod to Hendrix, he changed the game. Prince was better than both though.

Jimi for me, though this one hurts to choose. Deciding factor was that, while Clapton excelled and made profound statements in blues guitar, Jimi rewrote the book on the instrument entirely. Clapton used the guitar as his voice. The guitar WAS Jimi's voice. Though I'll never stop listening to either of their music.

john, all along the watchtower might beg to differ, with respect. but then dylan has also said that hendrix influenced him with that and other works. just as the Byrds did with mr tamborine man. dylan was the ultimate magpie.

I’d go Jimmy Page, but of the two listed it would be Jimi over Clapton, but wouldn’t go as far as calling it a ‘no contest’

In this contest I go Jimi - no different reasons than previously stated. So it’s close but Hendrix was in a different category.

My favorite is Page though, and the most skilled guitarist I’ve heard is Buckethead. When he filled in for Slash in GnR, he played Slash’s solos better than Slash without even looking at his fretboard.
