Steve is a mate of mine and taking off on a little global bike loving adventure. Steve is also a one of the leaders of the Panama cigar community who are great peeps. I was fortunate to spend some time with them in Panama City some years ago. 

I received the following email from Steve this morning. If you are on his route, touch base and if you can, catch up. He is one of the great characters of the cigar world.

On March 7 (only a month to go!) I will leave Panama for an around-the-world motorcycle trip! I'm attempting to get the Guinness World Record for the oldest man to go around the world on a motorbike. There may have been someone older who has done it, but Guinness doesn't know about it (or didn't meed Guinness requirements), so I figure "why not me"? I figure the trip will bake about a year.

I bought a new bike for the trip: A Suzuki DR650...about as basic as they get (it even has a carburetor!) and have done a ton of modifications. I love my BMW, but I really needed something that I can repair in the middle of nowhere...without a computer!

Oh -- best of all, I hope -- If all goes well my route will take me back to Australia. I'm hoping to fly the bike to Perth, the (not sure of the route) make my way to the east coast, and visit Tasmania before flying me and the bike to South America. Maybe see you at the end of the year or early 2027!

I completed my bucket list years ago; got me a plastic one, a rubber one, a galvanized one, a milking bucket, and when I got the elusive fire bucket... I celebrated with a fried chicken bucket!

Some golf courses I’d like to play. Some I probably will, some are a pipe dream at the moment.

Would love a crazy fishing trip (or spearfishing).

They idea of hiking a big mountain is cool in theory, but not sure I’d put in the effort or time.

I guess visiting some cool places is on the list?

I’m not really in that phase of life.

Bucket list would be a loong, loooooong, long lunch in a free Cuba with Hamlet, Jose, Foxy, Alex, Fuzz, John S, West, Stan, Artie, George, Mike, Di, my boys Ben and Tom.

I wanna see the Terracotta Army in Xi'an. I could take the world's co-fastest bullet train from HK or Shanghai 350+ Kmh. Or take a Suzuki I guess, that works too.

There's a bunch of racetracks & alpine passes I'd like to drive. A few of the passes I'd like to do my bicycle as well.

I had fancied the wilds of Cuba for a good few months, in its better days. Perhaps sometime. Also similarly around Patagonia.

I guess I'm quite a solitary being.

I have quite a few things on my bucket list, but the top travels would be these:

1. Golf in Ireland and Scotland

2. Visit Cuba

3. New Zealand and Australia

4. Vietnam and Thailand.

Two of my biggest passions in life are snowboarding and fishing. 

Bucket list adventure #1 would be a trip to Nepal to snowboard the Annapurna area. I have friends who have been, looks absolutely insane. My risk tolerance these days has unfortunately gone down dramatically with a 7 year old son (and my #1 snowboarding buddy) so likely not happening. Statistically-speaking, Annapurna is one of the most dangerous places in the world to slide down snow. 

Bucket list adventure #2 would be a wade fishing trip to St. Brandon’s Atoll, which can only be reached via a ~30 hour boat ride from Mauritius. Monster bonefish, permit. One day I might just do it…maybe when my 7 year old fishing buddy is a little older. 

I would also like to go to Russia. My Ukrainian grandparents are rolling in their graves if they can read that. But just seems like a fascinating place.

I was supposed to spend an entire summer there for language credits, but Covid put a stop to it. I'll never get over that, lmao!

Domestically, Yellowstone National Park is my "if I can only choose one". 

Internationally: Most of Asia, tbh, but I'd especially love to go to Japan to see some live rasslin shows. A few of my friends have been to Australia and had a blast, so definitely need to go as well. Cuba, of course.

2. Guided trip down the Babine River in British Columbia for huge fall run steelhead. 

3. Tierra Del Fuego for sea run browns. 

4. South America for Golden Dorado.

5. A fly in trip for huge Northern Pike, Lake Trout and Walleye, somewhere in Northern Canada.

Robert, when you get to # 5 give me a shout. I have made twenty two of those trips. Three above the Arctic Circle (no Pike or Walleye on those but huge Lakers, Arctic Char & Arctic Grayling).

I haven’t been to the Himalayas yet, but I’ve ice climbed (not very well) in a lot of places. Skied everywhere. Best epic I’ve had was getting caught doing boot spur traverse on Mount Washington in 50 below F in 93mph gusts. Only time in my life I thought I might die, so far. I had to slide on my ass on ice/rocks for 3/4 mile to tree line because the wind was too strong to use an ice axe. My ass bone was wrecked for six weeks. I think Cuba and a dinner with Pres would be a good finisher for me. And probably a few more countries to visit.

#5 is most likely at this point. The others are pricey as all get out.

I'd just like to retire with my sanity and health intact (still a long way off) and no debts. 

Have loosely planned a Southern France down through Andalusia into Spain then into Portugal driving trip (the point to the trip would be wine, sherry, port, food and cigars, if we can find any) with some friends but as is always the case there's been curve balls for one of or more of us that puts it back on hold. One day. 

Planning to play at St Andrews and do a bit of the UK for a mate's 50th in another 8 years or so.

I like listening to Andy Mill’s podcast. A few months ago he took a trip to Bolivia for Golden Dorado. Pretty cool listen. Andy is an incredible fisherman and has had some awesome guests on (this one is just him and his son).

My first cousin and his new bride had their honeymoon at the Everest base camp a couple of summers ago. They were at the base camp for two weeks.
