The earlier thread “Nominations for Worst Actors Awards” was very active, insightful and funny.

Here is the other side of it - favorite actors. These are the classic actors, the all-time greats, the award winners. These are also the slightly lesser known actors who just always seem to put on a good show. And these are the actors who seem to never miss with the movies they are in, even if just a minor role.

Okay gents, let’s hear it!

Strong list here. Tom Hanks is the best there is in my opinion but Brad Pitt and Gary Oldman are close. The variety of characters they all play well is amazing. Shout out to Colin Farrell too.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was automatic for me. He’s in a movie, I’m watching and almost certainly loving it.

Thats just off the top of my head favorites. All of them had upper level talent and the list of movies are the best of the best from this bunch IMO.

Keanu Reeves. I dedicate this nomination to @westg 

I grew up watching John Wayne's films with my grandad. We drank sarsaparilla together (he'd taken the pledge at school and stuck to it) and I pretended it was whisky so I have a very soft spot for any JW film.  

I also really like the Marx Brothers 

But for acting - Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. Daniel Craig as 007. Ian McKellan as Gandalf. Walton Goggins as the Ghoul in Fallout. Big fan of Alec Guinness, Ewan McGregor and Patrick Stewart. I like any film Emily Blunt is in. I'm also a fan of Audrey Hepburn

oldman is a fantastic actor. to play smiley and jackson lamb and churchill and sirius black - wow. though as someone recently said, if you are googling him, make sure you do not miss the 'r'. 

loveed robert duvall. 

dustin hoffman a brilliant actor. no argument that ben kingsley is a also great actor and was astonishing in Ghandi but i would argue that the year he got the Oscar, Hopkins was robbed. his performance in Tootsie was sensational. far and away the best performance of the year. and the finish to that film must surely be the funniest in any film ever. i start giggling even thinking about it. 

but for me, none tops anthony hopkins, when i lived in London, he was doing a lot of stage stuff. never missed anything he did. i always used to go to the preview sessions, because as a student, they were way cheaper, but exactly the same as the real thing which started a few days later. i saw hopkins do Lear. the most riveting thing i have ever seen. as soon as it was over, i booked to come back a few days later. he is truly one of the all time greatest. for me, the greatest. 

another guy who was astonishingly good on stage, and did a fair bit in film and tv but never the same heights, was michael kitchen. saw him do several shakespeare roles plus a play called Hogarth, about the artist. and more. won every imaginable award. was good as foyle in foyle's war but not the same.

as far as females, streep of course, but for me, jessica chastain has to be the pinnacle. if you doubt me, watch zero dark thirty. one of the truly great performances of all time.

Clint Eastwood was great in Unforgiven - couldn't believe that he didn't win the Academy Award that year.

The best acting performance of all time would have to belong to Maria Falconetti's work in Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 silent classic, The Passion of Joan of Arc. If you've seen this film, you'd know what I mean.

In terms of best actors, I would opine that Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro gave the best acting performances in their careers on a consistent basis, prior to both declining in older age.

In recent times, I would nominate Gary Oldman and Daniel Day-Lewis.

A little  difficult to one particular favourite actor. Favourite Roles 

Daniel Day Lewis was  classic in There Will Be Blood 

Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men. Hello Friendo. 

Robinson Williams in Goodmorning Vietnam and Goodwill Hunting

Joe Pesci in Casino and   Goodfellas . Sharon Stone in Casino.  

Jonah Hill in the Wolf of Wall Street he cracks me up in most of his movies.

Richard Dreyfuss Roy Schieder and Robert Shaw in Jaws. That scene when he shoots the first barrel." Dont wait for me". We use that all the time at sea....especially pulling or dumping lobster pots. I have watched that movie so so many times and I  will never grow tired of it. 

Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman and Heat. 

Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote was brilliant.

Recently went on a Daniel day Lewis spree after reading so much about his acting skill over the years.  And can confirm the hype is deserved and he is about as good as there is.

Cillian Murphy, Christoph Waltz, Gary Oldman have always given amazing performances. 

Hellen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Brie Larson, Michelle Yeoh, never miss as far as I am concerned, performances are outstanding.

I can't watch anything he's in. He just gives me this completely skeevy vibe, like I'd cross the street if he were walking near me in the dark. It is visceral.
