Your favourite street food/cheap eats?

Pics or vid always welcome so that we can track it down at home or on travels ;)

Mine are both Japanese. I love a great sandwich!

japanese pork cutlet sandwich (Katsu Sando)  and Japanese Egg Sandwich...so bloody simple but taken to a whole new level in Japan no matter whether you buy them in a 7/11 or train station.

I can relate to the katsu sando. Theres a Vietnamese place a block away from my office that does a fried pork bahn mi for $10, they bake their own baguettes fresh. So good and decent size for the price.

I'm not usually one for condiments. But when you mix Japanese BBQ sauce with hot mustard, kewpie mayonnaise and a panko crusted pork cutlet...magic happens.

I hate it when people in the UK suggest Japan is expensive. You can genuinely live of 7/11's and Familymarts, and you don't even feel like you are slumming it. I remember buying a fresh snow crab onigiri from a convenience store in Hakodate for about £1 and thinking I could quite happily be a hobo here.

Going to a 7-Eleven in Japan is the adult equivalent of a kid in a candy store. So many food options, you could literally live in a 7-Eleven and never have to go anywhere else to eat. Similarly, the ones in Taiwan and Sth Korea are also awesome. We really get shafted with 7-Eleven in western countries.

The one up the street from me here in Kansas City is so run down and dirty I no longer go in there. You wouldnt want to eat their food!

The 'Chicken Split' at Manchesters 'Chicken Run' is a thing of beauty and a scientifically proven weapons grade hangover cure. Tender, crunchy Jamaican fried chicken, chopped and stuffed into a fried dumping, then smothered in salad cream. Now I prefer to have it topped with curry chicken gravy, or 'cookdown' chicken gravy. But its legendary, whichever way.

Khao soi for 50 baht = 1.50 usd. An amazing curry from Northern Thailand.

Another favorite is Kua Gai which also sells for 50 baht. This spot in China town fries it in oil which gives the noodles a little more crisp. Absolutely wonderful once you add the red sauce.

Another favorite, the Choke Coach in Castroville CA,the artichoke Capitol of the world, where on a winter day after striper fishing I'll go get a grilled sausage and some artichoke soup. Not the same as those roach coaches around town serving tacos.

The other is Whiteys. My neighbor in Salinas, best burger and fries in town.

The other legendary place is Hot Grill with killer cheese dogs and some of the best fries w/ cheese and gravy…

....this is not our country's finest moment

“Australian pig in a blanket” or “devon roll”, which features mashed potato and onion stuffed into a piece of devon (otherwise known as stras) and held together with a tooth pick

I don’t have any pics on my phone, but I promise if you google it, it’s a thing. Pan fried cod tongues, grandfather used to be a fisherman. He’d sell the fish and keep the tongues like most people. They’re delicious, kinda of like a scallop but meatier texture if that makes sense.

Definition of poor people food. The rich kids took balogna sandwiches to school and us degenerates had lobster salad or leftover moose roast sandwiches.

DIY or is that Al's or Portillo's?

I would put in a vote for Mr Beef on Orleans. Used to live a couple blocks west of it. Very good option for late night food. 1 Beef, 1 fries, 1 Diet Coke. $20 on the dot, cash only.

Johnnies but Portillos and Al’s are certainly contenders. No Al’s in the suburbs. Truth is, there’s a ton of places to get a good beef anywhere around here. 😁
