A professional baby namer says new parents are now choosing names that sound “cool” as an Instagram or TikTok handle.

Steph Coffield, from Minnesota in the US, helps parents-to-be choose the perfect moniker for their child — charging up to $500 ($A760).

A mum herself, the 40-year-old said unique baby names are becoming more popular — and it has a lot to do with social media.

The most surprising new trend, Coffield said, is parents choosing names that work well as social media handles.

“Communication and technology are so huge right now, and it helps individualise the child and gives them their own unique identity,” Coffield said.

“People want their kids to have that unique identity — they want their kids to have a cool name handle for Instagram or TikTok in the future.

“John and Mary — I’m so over those.”

Social media-friendly names

She said six examples of unique and social media-friendly names include Ferris, Keaton and Townsend for boys and Birdena, Doretta and Velma for girls.

Coffield’s services cost anywhere from $25 ($A38) for five name suggestions, to $500 ($A760) for an “interactive experience” which involves unlimited name suggestions, three video calls and a personalised certificate.

She runs TikTok account Names With Steph, which has about 250,000 followers. Coffield said when she started getting requests for name suggestions she decided to turn it into a business.

“I was getting so many requests I had to start charging for it,” she said.

She said she believes masculine girl names and last names used as first names will be big trends in 2024.

“People are going with Barrett for boys,” she said.

“For girls, I’m seeing a lot more masculine names, not just Logan and James any more but Denver and Murphy.”

Coffield said she also believed names ending in “ie” or “y” would be popular this year.

“I think we’re going to see a lot more Sonnys and a lot more Lennies — Lennie and Lenny because people are loving that ‘ie’ ending for both boys and girls.”

Gender-neutral names

The mum-of-three is also a fan of gender-neutral names and has published a book titled Names Don’t Have A Gender.

“We haven’t quite seen as many feminine names for boys yet,” she said.

“I always say there are a lot of options for girls.

“Often you want to name your boy after something traditional — maybe it’s a family name, or he’s the third of a generation.

“For girls ... they end up getting all the possibilities so for girls, you can pick anything.”

Coffield is commonly asked if her unique name suggestions will age well, and work for an adult.

“People say ‘Well what about when they grow up’ and to that point — look at Dolly Parton. Her name is Dolly and she is an icon. She owned that name,” she said.

“I don’t care if you are four or 95, I think that name works — just like names don’t have a gender, names don’t have an age.”

Ferris, Velma and Lenny? So I should look at 80s movies and cartoons for baby name inspiration?

Just start naming kids after Roger's identities from American Dad. Imagine! You walk into a cigar bar, everyone stops and stares. They can't believe Reaganomics Lamborghini walked in the door.

Frank Zappa had this covered long ago.

Was just thinking about a career change. Here we go. My other idea would be to apply for a job with the https://domypaper.com/ and start traveling the world at the same time. Having a remote job would open up so many possibilities for exploration and adventure. Imagine being able to work from anywhere—whether it's a bustling city cafe in Paris, a serene beach in Bali, or a cozy mountain cabin in the Rockies

The bigger question IMHO is who in their right mind would listen to these so-called "influencers"?  What a racket.

As far as i'm concerned, if there's a demand then there's no racket but yeah... Strange times.

My wife....and I get to hear about it 😒  Perhaps "in their right mind" is a disqualifier. This morning's version was regarding the royal family and some photoshopping which means something I guess. I zoned out while she was talking about it while I considered whether I should have a piece of banana bread or raisin toast.

I cannot see what was changed, even when pointed out. Who cares if some editing happened? They still look the same. It's not like they put Fat Albert's head on Arnold Schwarzenegger.

No, the raisin toast.

I haven't had slice of raisin toast in years.

Eat it frequently. Cinnamon, raisins...Yum.
