California is first in world to ban new diesel trucks

Nadia Lopez

In a move that will transform California’s economy and end diesel’s decades-long dominance in goods movement, California's Air Resources Board unanimously approved Friday an ambitious, contentious mandate to shift big rigs and other trucks to zero emissions.

The mandate is the first in the world to ban new diesel trucks and require a switch to zero-emission big rigs, garbage trucks, delivery trucks and other medium and heavy-duty vehicles. The rules will dramatically change the commercial trucks that are driven on California’s roads, affecting about 1.8 million trucks, including ones operated by the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, UPS and Amazon.

Lots of people here in japan, still believe US or your state is a kind of paradiso. Some are heading to AU and work as illegal immigrants. There seems always green grass outside here or you place. Although My country has many problem indeed...

I mean as far as things go, I just stated some first world problem stuff. Setting aside real world problems, the perception of California as a paradise is far from the truth. Tourism in places like San Francisco is way down and I really feel bad for those who come all over the world to visit that city only to find needles and human feces on the ground and a homeless person punching a street sign. The weather is amazing and the state has some beautiful attractions. But politicians have ruined many places. I could go on but this topic is about diesel.

It's not going to happen, period. 500K for an electric 18 wheeler? California needs to stop smoking Cannabis and come back down to reality.

The politicians are completely disconnected.

California is the model for what America will become.  It's the genesis of American, trends, culture, and politics.  America wants to be California.

When Californians leave the state they bring their politics and sensibilities to their new home.

"Zero emissions"  is such a bloody joke that I can't believe people actually buy it.

There's always a market for snake oil 😆

They are moving to South Carolina.  It takes some time before they can have a major impact.

Zero emissions? Does that also include the truck drivers? Because, you know, after a roadside diner meal there's some pretty toxic gas emissions....

It's a drop in the ocean. Now if California and other big states would ban SUVs and mini-trucks and sanction a more sensible mode of personal transportation that would have some positive impact at least.

All California needs to do is pass a $4.00 a gallon tax or gas or diesel.  That'll quick start their goals.

Won't make an even negligible difference. China is building a coal powered electrical plant every couple weeks. Do you think they care about climate change when their ultimate goal is world domination? China, India and other "developing nations" are the world's biggest carbon emitters.

I was born and raised in California. This is just a grab for votes and funding. It will never happen, same as that rail way we were supposed to get. But guess who pays for it?

Starting in 2036, meaning in reality it will never happen. Same as a complete ban on plastic bags and cars which use gas. Don't believe the hype.

If you want an honest assessment of the world's largest CO2 emitters I invite you to have a look here: https://ourworldindata.org/contributed-most-global-co2

Even just looking at current annual emissions Americans and Europeans are much larger polluters per capita than China. And the picture is more skewed even when you consider a lot of these 'Chinese coal plants' are powering factories producing stuff for our markets; those are basically outsources emissions.

I am very suspicious of China politics, however pointing a finger at them and other developing nations in this context is in my opinion unfair and just not factually correct.

My gripe with SUV's and other oversized personal transportation is that I consider it a complete unnecessary waste of limited resources, with a totally unnecessary devastating ecological impact. Why use 4000 lbs+ of steel, plastic and other more exotic materials (+the corresponding gas usage) just to move around what is most of the time one human? It's beyond me.

It will be far too late by then for this to have any positive affects on the atmosphere. Its nothing more than hollow virtue signaling.

In fairness to California, this move is not only about climate change. California has by far the worst air quality in the country - most people in the state live in a county that exceeds the national air quality standards for 2 or more pollutants (there are only six, none of which are greenhouse gases). Most places in the US don't exceed any.  Completely leaving aside climate change, that air pollution has significant (and costly) impacts on public health, and diesel is actually a significant contributor (since whereas greenhouse gases have a global impact, other air pollutants are much more local).

California's politicians do love to virtue signal, often to the point of being asses. But here there are at least good reasons for this move and it will in fact have an impact in their state if it ever comes to pass (again, even completely leaving climate change out of the equation). You can still think its a terrible idea, but it definitely isn't meaningless posturing.

The people fleeing are the ones leaving because they think it's a shithole. California has an extremely large non-progressive and conservative population.

I don't think lowering our emissions is a bad idea at all. Its been clear for decades that we need to move away from fossil fuels. I think a group of politicians saying "we've agreed to start addressing the issue in a decade and half" is completely hollow and worthless. Great, they get to have a press conference and pat each other on the backs, while the problem keeps getting worse. Southern California has had some of the worst air quality in the country for 40+ years now. That's a result of shoving way to many people into way to small of a spot. The geography in the area also doesn't help, but it isn't the cause of the problem.

There are a million things we could be doing today that actually address the problem. Things that create/maintain jobs, things that increase efficiencies for citizens and businesses, things that shouldn't cost us anymore than we're already spending for energy. This isn't any of those things.

They are not mutually exclusive. It’s not possible to transition to no diesel trucks anytime this decade because the tech and infrastructure just isn’t there. It also isn’t reasonable to spring the ban on the industry in 2034 with no notice. And this action doesn’t preclude doing any of the other million things we can do to address pollution and climate change.

The reason it’s always California coming up with these pollution controls is that they’re the only state with a statutory waiver from Clean Air Act preclusion. Other state’s can’t enforce their own pollution standards, though they can adopt California’s. That’s another reason why the state has taken an aggressive stance - with a right-wing federal judiciary that’s increasingly hostile to administrative agencies like the EPA, California has clear and explicit statutory authority to establish standards for other states to voluntarily adopt. It’s not ideal, but once enough market share establishes rules it can have a powerful knock on effect.

Yes, China is the largest carbon emitter, but the US are second on the list. India emits about half the amount the US does. Per capita, the US emits more than China.
