MoeFOH's Album of the Week 🎶

Same as the movie thread, each week we're going to spotlight an album... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite tracks, clips, lyrics, experiences if you saw live, etc... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us... :looking:

All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! :cigar:

PM me with suggestions if there's an album you want to nominate for next week's discussion.

Week #36: Appetite For Destruction

Wiki says:

Appetite for Destruction is the debut studio album by American hard rock band Guns N' Roses. It was released on July 21, 1987, by Geffen Records.

The album was released to little mainstream attention in 1987. It was not until the following year that Appetite for Destruction became a commercial success, after the band had toured and received significant airplay with the singles "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child o' Mine". The album peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 and became the seventh best-selling album of all time in the United States, as well as the best-selling debut album. With over 30 million copies sold worldwide, it is also one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Although critics were originally ambivalent toward the album, Appetite for Destruction has received retrospective acclaim and has been viewed as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2018, it was re-released as a remastered box set to similar acclaim.

Over to you...

How do you rate it? 🤔

Thoughts, experiences, memories... post em' up!

Score it out of 10!  :perfect10:

mate of mine just rang - he is very excited. seeing them in brizzy tonight.

personally, they fall into that sort of era which had these guys, bonjovi, nirvana, others i cannot think of - i have probably heard songs from them but i honestly could not name a single song. but, each to their own. i assume they were variations on a theme but interchangable for me.

that said, i thought any mention of guns on this forum was banned?

A fantastic album, Slash's guitar playing, those classic riffs. Sweet Child of Mine was a killer riff. This album represented the 1980's well. A solid 9 out of 10

Have to admit that it didn't do much for me initially upon release but grew on me.

Kudos to Guns N' Roses for releasing an album like this in mid-1987. After all, that was a period in Pop music where this sort of album definitely didn't fit in. "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child o' Mine" are all classic songs now that are well known.

Excellent debut album.  One of the all time best. Up there with Van Halen I. Great, crunchy riffs, cool songs, awesome vocals. A grittier Aerosmith IMO.  10/10 for me.  I saw them open for Iron Maiden when this album came out.  They were fantastic live. Sadly, I never got the chance to catch another of their live shows again.  It's good to see them back together and I think it's time they write a new album.

Nobody captured the depravity and decadence of the Los Angeles rock and roll lifestyle like GNR did on this album.  While this wasn't my favorite type/genre of music, being in my 30s at the time, the album was a prime example of big hair-big sound, and I think it stands up well to the test of time.  Welcome to the Jungle, baby!

Slash's guitar solo on Mr. Brownstone is still mindblowing.

There's not a GNR album I don't like including Lies (which has its share of controversial songs and lyrics) but there's no denying that this is Incredible album, by an incredible band will go down as one of the all time greatest albums. Just pure musical magic.

Robert Williams also deserves some credit for making the album cover which must be one the most recognizable music-related t shirts of all time.

10/10
