I heard a short radio program about who FF Coppola wanted cast as the lead characters, opposed to what the studio exec's wanted. Fascinating to imagine the differences...

I have the box set ... still haven't seen Godfather III.

Lucky you!

Godfather I…10/10 easy. This is a perfect film for me. My favorite thing in the film is how honest I find Brando’s acting. Take any scene with him…pure gold…mocking Johnny Fontaine…or Don Corleone give me justice…but you don’t ask with respect…or even him playing with the grandson at the end of the film in the tomato garden.

My favorite scene, and there are many,is when Michael shoots Solozzo and McCluskey in the restaurant.

Definitely one of the greatest scenes of all time.

Interesting fact, the gun used was the real service revolver from the policeman who acted as technical advisor on the film. Went on to be a famous producer too I believe.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary, a local lounge was showing the movie this past Saturday, having a food spread, some beverages;  sounded like a nice time. I have never seen the movie, so thought this would be the perfect time- enjoy the movie, some food, friendship, a cigar or two. And it snowed. So still have not seen this movie.

Movie rating : No idea/10

Weather rating: 0/10

It's definitely a classic. This is the movie that made Pacino. He has such an amazing journey in this role. He starts off kind of unobtrusive, so you barely notice him. But that quiet intensity just builds and builds towards that baptism at the end. Think about when he's laughed at for saying he's going to go after Sollozzo or really any of the first few scenes he is in, and then compare that with his scenes at the end of the film. Then you have Brando, Caan, Duvall, Keaton, Cazale, Vigoda, Castellano...the list goes on and on. Some really great performances from some real all stars.

The story was also pretty amazing. I read the book years ago; its like Shakespeare. Really strong spine to work from, and Coppola took full advantage of the material, the cast, the cinematography (for example: the darkness of the scenes at the beginning in Don Corleone's office during Connie's wedding, and how that sets the tone for both the film and for the family at its center), etc.

I give it 9/10. There are very few movies I'd rank above this one. That said, I'd have a hard time deciding between this, Godfather 2, and Apocalypse Now for Coppola's best. The guy did some amazing stuff.

An absolute 10. The story, the acting, directing, casting, costume… everything, all home runs. Think of the number of quotes you’re still using today from this 50 year old movie. Let me tell you something my kraut mick friends, doesn’t get any better. Few if any nits to pick with it. The legends behind the making of the movie are just as entertaining too.

Read lot of people claiming I is a more entertaining movie but II is the masterpiece. I’ve seen II a good dozen times, still confuses the hell out of me. Can’t bring myself to waste the time on III.

One of my favourite tidbits... "I'm German-Irish"... Woltz wasn't deterred! :rotfl:

This is definitely the truth.

100%. One of the greats and so understated. I think it was DeNiro who underwrote his involvement in The Deer Hunter even though they knew how sick he was.

Also, love the story that goes something like "he came bowling in one day to announce to Pacino et al that he was in love with the greatest actress he'd ever seen, and everyone was all ok, whatever" Turned out to be Meryl Streep.

I have seen the Godfather series of films a grand total of.... one time. And I have not had any interest in seeing them more than that. Honestly, I just don't understand the fascination with the films.

Great flick. Easily a 9.5/10 for me.

While this clip is from part II (I believe?) it still is probably one of the most recognizable quotes in la cosa nostra cinema history IMO:

Fuzz, I haven't seen any of them. Always on my watch list, but I was afraid they wouldn't live up to the hype. Scarface was another one. I had to erase all of the references from my memory in order to evaluate it on  its own and to lower the bar. Still 'meh'. Crazy, but 'meh'.

Cheers

To me, The Godfather 1 and 2 are miles above Scarface. Scarface is a lot of fun, if you like those kinds of films. The Godfather is a classic.

This 🙄

Godfather II was better in my opinion than the original.  The scene where he shuts the door in Kate's face is epic.  Both great movies and definitely in my top 10 of all time....maybe in the top 5 but Casablanca will remain number 1 until a fresh movie or an oldie I've never seen knocks it off its perch.
