Popular Post Puros Y Vino Posted August 5, 2021 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2021 I have a closet in my man cave that I want to partially convert into a walk-in, actually, step-in humidor. Surprisingly, the wife likes the idea more than "stupid bins". Dimensions are as follows:(inches) H=88 / D=23.25 / W=55 9.68 square feet. 63 cubic feet. This is how it looks from the outside. It's going to be built from the left hand side over to where the door frame on the right begins (right edge of mirror). I"m going to put a wall at that point and keep the right hand side as a closet/storage/coolidor spillover area. This is the inside. It's basic drywall and has the same vinyl floor as the rest of the room. I've outlined the following ideas for the build. Looking for feedback. Want to hermetically seal the area. I was thinking of vapor barriers and creating a void between the actual wall and new interior walls (materials TBD). Basically build a "box" within the space. Raising the floor a bit to create a void between the vinyl floor as well. Slatted shelving on either sides of the door. Right hand side will be deeper. In the second photo are cigar bins and I've calculated that they'll all fit nice and neat in this area. On the floor, I'm going to have some wine racks as well. I don't collect wine as much as I drink it, so I don't need a lot of storage. These would sit under the cigar shelving. Or I might have a wine tower on either side of the shelving from floor to ceiling to maximize space. Glass or plexiglass door. Need to create a seal obviously, so I'm wondering if a sauna type entry door would work. The doorway dimensions are as follows: 23 1/4 * 79 1/8 inches. Since there will be wine in here as well, I'd like to explore cooling options. This room doesn't get too hot during summer but I'd like a more steady climate for this room. I'll need a humidifier too of course. If there's an all in one unit that does both please LMK! The room has two power receptacles already in it which should suffice for the cooling/humidity control, lighting and a few fans for air circulation. In terms of materials, Spanish Cedar isn't cheap and probably more expensive during the Pandemic. I know there are other woods that fit the bill. Please suggest some. Is there any other material besides wood that I should consider? I'm going to do a 3D model is some software I have. In the meantime any suggestions , questions, etc are more than welcome. Quick 3D mock-up. Very much a WIP. 11
smbauerllc Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 No suggestions for you, but congratulations. Would be very cool to have a walk in humidor, even a small one. Enjoy filling it up, I know I would. Cigar shopping always makes me happy. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Cigar Surgeon Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Hey brother, reach out to Nav and Joel on Facebook. Both of them just finished doing walk-ins and no doubt can save you a number of headaches for the build. Also, congrats! 1
Chibearsv Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Love a green light. Why bother with the "spillover" closet. You know the only thing that is going to spillover into that closet is tupperdors so why not just make your walk-in bigger? I'd use the back wall for the shelving and put glass doors on the front so you could see your stock without having to open the door. Just a thought. I've got no clue on how to build it properly sealed or how to humidify that big a space so I will eagerly wait to see other responses. Should be pretty cool to put together. 2
Popular Post rcarlson Posted August 5, 2021 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2021 Going to make a predication here. Frank's Old Lady will fill those "stupid bins" with shoes and seasonal clothing, take over the space currently used for Frank's other important stuff, then the bins will magically multiply and transform into the "smartest space-savers" ever conceived to overtake the walk-in part of the walk-in because "every woman needs a cedar lined closet." You're playing checkers; she's playing chess. 2 1 5
benfica_77 Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 That's exciting Frank. Please post pics during the process and final build. 2
Scubasteve20 Posted August 6, 2021 Posted August 6, 2021 I went through the materials decision recently and for my needs I settled on Lauan plywood for wall lining and Spanish Cedar for the shelves. It blended very well in color and texture to SC. Just using SC for the shelves provided me with plenty of the aromatic quality and saved a bunch of money, plus made construction easier since lauan is readily available in larger formats. PM if you want the source I used for the cedar, I scoured for months and he's the best I found by far. Good luck on the rest and congrats! P.S. - Love the EVH Franken-vee on the wall. 1

Thanks for the tips. Good eye catching that EVH V. It's a WIP. Gotta put the innards in it and see how it sounds. It was from a cheapo kit. I suspect the pickups are less than adequate.
Edicion Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Congrats on your upcoming humidor - great and fun project.
