LordAnubis Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 So the world is going the way of plain packaging, inevitably it will be all you can buy. So question, considering plain packaging is cardboard boxes with diseased tongues etc on it, what would your solution be? In this specific scenario you don't get any form of the original box, its a purpose built plain package box made of cardboard with printed warning and images etc on it, you can't just peel off a sticker. 1
Fuzz Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 I voted to remove and add to existing boxes.... but then I thought, I'm not doing that now with all my loose cigars, so why should I start? Screw it, they all go into a giant 50L air tight plastic container. They shall all co-mingle in a giant melting pot of habanos! 3
LordAnubis Posted July 5, 2021 Author Posted July 5, 2021 What got me thinking is that i offload my empty boxes, so i wonder if the empty boxes will be worth more or even equal to the amount of the actual cigars in the future? Imagine that! But then also how do you track the date of cigars if the plain packaged boxes get ditched.... Lots of questions....

You can scan it for all the info, and also use it with inventory management software.
Tdm_86 Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 I couldn’t care less. Ditch the cardboard boxes and put the cigars in my humidor like I do all my singles. They’re for smoking. And if I want to age something or keep track of the box dates, there’s always a way of organising/marking them. 1
Chibearsv Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 I wouldn’t keep them in the crappy cardboard so they’ll just go loose in a drawer in one of the fridgeadors. I’m not a keeper of dates or codes so that part of the decision doesn’t matter to me.
mprach024 Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 I knew the mountain of empty boxes I don’t throw away would pay off someday. Now I can tell my wife that it will be me that has the last laugh. 1 2
SCgarman Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Saying the whole world is going to plain packaging is a bit of a stretch. My main supplier is in Switzerland and I have yet to receive a generic box.

However more and more countries are taking up plain packagin, and I've never heard of a plain packaging country going back to regular packaging. So in that sense the world is going that way. 1

Aside from Canada and Australia what other countries have gone the way of generic boxes and bands? Any UK countries? I am in the USA

I am in the USA I think Singapore and they don't allow importing non-generic packaging. UK is plain packaging as is Ireland now. US will probably be one of the last Wikipedia has this table: History of plain tobacco packaging Year Countries where plain packaging law comes into force (retail level) 2012 Australia (1 December) 2017 France (1 January), United Kingdom (21 May) 2018 New Zealand (6 June), Norway (1 July), Ireland (30 September) 2019 Thailand (9 December), Uruguay (22 December) 2020 Saudi Arabia (1 January), Slovenia (1 January), Turkey (5 January) [a], Israel (8 January), Canada (7 February), Singapore (1 July) 2021 Belgium (1 January), Netherlands (1 October) 2022 Hungary (1 January), Denmark (1 April), Guernsey (31 July) 2023 Georgia (1 January) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_tobacco_packaging 1 2

Yeah Switzerland and Spain may escape it or may have exceptions for export at least. Just like Australia and FOH. They use plain packaging domestically but can sell regular boxes internationally.
Digi Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Turing the question to a different angle on the topic, when it comes to regular packaging. What do you do with: cardboard outers bags protective film I tend to leave them on, more out of not wanting to handle and store it elsewhere. A buddy of mine tends to leave it all in storage (including the leaflets/inserts...is there an industry term for those?), only putting the box and cigars in the humidor.

It only takes the right mix of draconian parliamentarians in any given country. Switzerland is not part of the EU obviously. Duty free zone (exports) are generally exempt from domestic labelling. 1

Cardboard outer boxes I keep separately and only put the actual boxes in my coolers. I remove the habanos insert and have a pile of them. I leave in the cedar sheets and thin paper sheets.
