I saw the below Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion Number 3 on Bond Roberts.

It was never a popular cigar but it certainly was one that I enjoyed. It is what I refer to as an "outlier" within a marque.........a cigar that is very different flavour wise to what people "perceived" that marque to be.

The exhibicion 3 wasn't that cuddly and soft  morello cherry / rosewater R&J.  It was often a rambunctious son of a bitch with bite and personality.

I miss them.  I gravitate to the black sheep in any family........less predictable....ton of fun :D

In your mind, what are the outliers/black sheep in the marques (discontinued or current production). Those particular cigars that just don't quite fit with the flavour perception of that marque?

The first one I think of is always the R&J Cazadores.  Totally different profile for me than the exhibition 4 or all the different Churchill varieties that I love so much.

I was really impressed by the Vegueros Mananitas. Bought an aged box off some dodgy guy that hangs in your circles, and honestly it was pretty good. Not saying it was a life altering smoke, but it definitely change my mind into considering buyinga few cheap tins and throwing them in the back of the humidor for a few years.

With your new humi, if you did throw them in the back (especially up top :sneaky:), I doubt you will find them again. :P

This cigar never got any love. Even MRN remarked how inferior it was to the Ex 4. I'm shocked it took as long as it did to get cut when so many other great Corona Gordas got the axe so much earlier.

Interestingly I never came across this cigar in the 90s. Only the Ex 4. In fact, I may never have even ever had one. By the time RyJ started turning things around in the early 2010s this was getting pretty hard to find. I never felt the urge to buy any.

For me it’s the Mag 46 - so different than the Connie 1, Connie A and even the HUP 2

I would generally agree, but I do think that when you get a dark wrapper HUP2, they can be very full bodied and similar to the Mag 46.

Por Larranaga Picadores to me, are the most misunderstood cigar of the current standard catalogue.

They are still popular, so I'm not sure I'd call them a black sheep. But I do agree with your description of the Picadores. The problem I have with them is that they are very subtle when young. They absolutely do have that "vegetal" and "grassy" taste to them. But as you describe, once these have time the caramel sweetness comes in and boosts the whole profile. I would smoke them all the time with enough age but before they're ready they're just not where I put my coin.

Not too many black sheep in the HSA catalog anymore. The lineups have been trimmed pretty severely the last 15 years.

Here's two cigars you never hear about: Hoyo Coronations and Hoyo Palmas Extra.

I had a 2009 Ex3 at JJFox early last year and it was a beautiful smoke. They'd dug a box out of the vaults and by the time I was there again a couple of months later they were gone, never to be seen again.

I was under the impression they were fairly slow moving, I know that when I was buying my last boxes, they were fairly close to original release date, and I think they were bought a good 4yrs after.
