El Presidente Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 I saw the below Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion Number 3 on Bond Roberts. It was never a popular cigar but it certainly was one that I enjoyed. It is what I refer to as an "outlier" within a marque.........a cigar that is very different flavour wise to what people "perceived" that marque to be. The exhibicion 3 wasn't that cuddly and soft morello cherry / rosewater R&J. It was often a rambunctious son of a bitch with bite and personality. I miss them. I gravitate to the black sheep in any family........less predictable....ton of fun In your mind, what are the outliers/black sheep in the marques (discontinued or current production). Those particular cigars that just don't quite fit with the flavour perception of that marque? 4
CigarAsh Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 The first one I think of is always the R&J Cazadores. Totally different profile for me than the exhibition 4 or all the different Churchill varieties that I love so much. 3
LordAnubis Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 I was really impressed by the Vegueros Mananitas. Bought an aged box off some dodgy guy that hangs in your circles, and honestly it was pretty good. Not saying it was a life altering smoke, but it definitely change my mind into considering buyinga few cheap tins and throwing them in the back of the humidor for a few years.

With your new humi, if you did throw them in the back (especially up top ), I doubt you will find them again.
NSXCIGAR Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 This cigar never got any love. Even MRN remarked how inferior it was to the Ex 4. I'm shocked it took as long as it did to get cut when so many other great Corona Gordas got the axe so much earlier. Interestingly I never came across this cigar in the 90s. Only the Ex 4. In fact, I may never have even ever had one. By the time RyJ started turning things around in the early 2010s this was getting pretty hard to find. I never felt the urge to buy any. 1

Popular Post 99call Posted September 4, 2020 Popular Post Posted September 4, 2020 Por Larranaga Picadores to me, are the most misunderstood cigar of the current standard catalogue. With the wrapper usually coming through in a golden colorado claro wrapper, I continuously get frustrated by those who comment. "this cigar tastes nothing like a typical PL" Hhmmm!? maybe because it's not supposed to ? . When i first saw the cigar advertised, and the hue of wrapper, I instantly felt like it would be a departure from the standard PL blend. To me they have a sweet green pea/ grassy sweetness to them. light to under medium in body, and have more in common with a ERDMCS than a PLPC, although there are slight touches of that PL caramel, if you age beyond 3yrs. I feel as if they have been poorly received just because PL whores, desperately wanted an out and out PL Robusto/Hermosos no 4, dark bready and full of burnt caramel. it's not a bad cigar at all, I think it just got misunderstood 6 1
vhampl03 Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 For me it’s the Mag 46 - so different than the Connie 1, Connie A and even the HUP 2

They are still popular, so I'm not sure I'd call them a black sheep. But I do agree with your description of the Picadores. The problem I have with them is that they are very subtle when young. They absolutely do have that "vegetal" and "grassy" taste to them. But as you describe, once these have time the caramel sweetness comes in and boosts the whole profile. I would smoke them all the time with enough age but before they're ready they're just not where I put my coin.
NSXCIGAR Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 Not too many black sheep in the HSA catalog anymore. The lineups have been trimmed pretty severely the last 15 years. Here's two cigars you never hear about: Hoyo Coronations and Hoyo Palmas Extra. 1
Akela3rd Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 I had a 2009 Ex3 at JJFox early last year and it was a beautiful smoke. They'd dug a box out of the vaults and by the time I was there again a couple of months later they were gone, never to be seen again. Sent from Cosmos Redshift 7 1
