Washington warns buying Cuban rum, cigars funds ‘dictatorship’

The US has warned against consuming Cuban rum and cigars, claiming that two of the island’s most iconic products help finance the country’s Communist “dictatorship.”

“The #Castro economy relies on the theft of private property and the repression of the people. Regime-made Cuban rum and cigars are luxuries that are not worth the human cost,” tweeted the main US diplomat for Latin America, Michael Kozak, on Monday.

The acting assistant secretary for western hemisphere affairs accompanied the tweet, posted in both English and Spanish, with a photo of a lit cigar captioned with the words, “Are they worth the price?”

Kozak doubled down on his message Tuesday, posting a photo to Twitter of a glass of rum that urged people to “consume responsibly.”

“The #Castro regime has aged badly,” he tweeted alongside the image, again in the two languages.

“Cuba’s rum was legendary, before the regime stole it to finance their repression. Now every bottle sold keeps Cuba’s dictatorship in power longer,” he said.

“Still enjoying that mojito?”

Neither Cuban rum nor cigars, the traditional engines of the country’s economy, can legally be brought into the US, which has maintained an embargo on the island since 1962

This writer doesn't have his facts straight. Cuban cigars and rum HAVE been permitted in the US since 2016.

I believe the US Diplomat for Latin America was aiming at those who do consume the said products both legally and illegally.

He probably said it over a Monte and a glass of Santiago

Not entirely certain why dictatorship is in quotes. Oh, that's right, because Cuba is a true republic. My mistake ?

I’m actually quite surprised there isn’t a juicy conspiracy theory here in ‘murica regarding the mind-controlling substances the Cubans are spiking their cigars and rum with. Or maybe there is....

Now, I come from a former communist state, so I am completely against it, and everytime I hear neo-Marxists chanting for it I feel like my head's about to burst, only people from countries which were never communist, France, Britain, America etc could ask for it. But I would except from this repulsion two countries: Cuba and the former Iugoslavia. Cuba was pretty much an American colony, with the mob having plenty of business in Havana, before Fidel came, so it is not like it was better before. And Iugoslavia was the only country in the East European Communist Block in which the citizens actually loved their leader, Tito. As soon as he died, it seems as though the West needed to make an anti communist example of the successful regime, and the war broke out. Tito was the only one that was able to hold all those ethnicities and religions together. As soon as he was gone all hell broke loose.

Lol. Without getting into the political weeds / history of the US and dictators ... Totally worth it.

I won't even mention all of the consumer goods Americans buy from China... oh damn, sorry.
