whereas the good harvests (i.e. 17, 18 and 19) seemingly have produced amazing smokes

you won't have seen much of the '19 harvest yet in the finished product, apart from perhaps the very first wrappers. (you cigar-whisperer, you :D)

Again, there hasn't been a truly bad year since 98/99.

does 00-01/02 not fall into the "bad year" category? i hear so much about people avoiding those years. more so then 98.

I’m glad you caught that! ? I had told some friends back in 2017 that the stars were coming out in 2019, which inspired 2 trips down last year. I regretted not making my FOH user name “The Cigar Whisperer!”

If you catch my original post on this thread, I also predicted that the ‘20’s are going to follow suit.

Sue me if I’m wrong... ?

Dodgy but far better than 98/99

Still, so many skinnies were tight as dowells. I had so many cabs of Punch SS1 to prove it.

The beginning of the Altadis JV. Some green shoots.  Not enough properly aged leaf around.  Some excellent cigars. SLRDC and Winston from that period were special. That is from memory.

is it reflected in the auction house? like do boxes from 2013-2014 tend to go for more then other years?

Not really or maybe just hard to tell. If people are chasing a cigar then they will bite regardless if is 2010 or 2016.

The exception will be skinnies from the problematic years.

However, auctions are not necessarily a place of Vulcan type logic :D

this flys in the face of people saying bad crops are to blame for bad years

2013–14 Cuban Tobacco Harvest May Be Worst in 20 Years

On the contrary.

That harvest came into play in 2016-17  cigars (depending if we are talking wrapper/volado/seco/ligero as they take 18 months to 3 years to be ready).

Unfortunately they had back to back tough crops.

ah so releasee date not date of construction got ya

Bingo

2013-14 box dates would have been predominantly from 2009-11 crops.

right and its reflected in the dips in 16/17 so its proof that it does

It gets a touch worse as the following year saw some untimely rains.

they were left scratching for quality large wrapper leaf come second half 17 and first half 18.

Exactly. I guess no one remembers that Siglo IV, V, VI, Esplendidos and Lanceros were MIA for about a year. In fact Siglo V 25s may have been gone for nearly two years IIRC. And forget about Behike.

A lot of cigars that had last been seen in 14 that should have resurfaced around 16 never did. MdO2, Hoyo DD, SLR DC. HSA, seeing no production in sight for these already unpopular models probably decided to just kill them then and there.

For me from a purchase standpoint.

14 was excellent POU DEC 14 MONTE 4 ARG MAR 14 Petit Edmundo LUB MAY for Upmann 2. Trinidad AEM DIC 14

2012 was also great with Partagas D4 SMO MAR 12...stocked up big time and have not purchased any since 898's glorious. Stunning Genios and Behike as well.

I probably if I think about it all the way back to 2010..So much stock to buy then which is long gone now .

MC#2 ULA OCT 14 excellent box

CoLa from 2014 world class

I am working through late 18 and 19 now and they have been excellent for most Marcas. I will definitely know more in 12 -24 months on that.
