MoeFOH Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 This week on 50/50, 2nd Round of giants in the text/film series arena... You know the drill: read the question, vote on the poll, elaborate in the thread if you so desire. Voting participants go into the draw for an El Pres sampler! - Drawn next Wednesday (Aus local time). All about 50/50... 50/50 is a weekly poll where we find out whether or not some serious bones of contention questions can be finally be buried or will instead remain above ground as a fleshy 50/50 debate... you know, such weighty issues as these... If given no other option: do you prefer Hunnicutt or Trapper in M*A*S*H? Connery or Moore as Bond? Apple or PC? Smooth or Crunchy peanut butter? do you prefer wearing men's or women's underwear? Sacrificing chickens or virgins? ...that sort of standard fare. Vote in the poll and further bolster your standpoint in the thread below if you wish. Poll Votes are public and there's a couple of sticks up for grabs for participants. Also, PM me Polls that you'd like me to conduct on 50/50 and there'll be a prize for those we decide to use.
Colt45 Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 For me, Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit are on another plane of existence, and there's no comparison. 1
Bri Fi Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 Godfather. That was easy. But, I haven’t made it past the first twenty min in #3. Tried watching two or three times. Looked like Al Pacino tried to incorporate Scarface or Carlito’s Way in the third. What a waste of great film potential.
dobbs Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 too easy, the godfathers are classics, the rings are just a fun story. -dobbs 1
Astar20 Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 This is gonna be another landslide godfather for sure!
Deeg Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 LotR gonna get no support. Movies shot in New Zealand on an Aussie board? Mad respect for The Godfather films and novels, which are great. But reading Tolkien as a kid literally changed my life. Those books are both entertaining and socially important, IMO. A strong response to the rise of fascism in Europe. The foundation of an entire genre of fiction.
SmokyFontaine Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 The Godfather, hands down. I don't have any problem falling asleep, so I have no need for the Lord of the Rings movies.
Jal154 Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 GF 1 & 2..........and yes 3 should be erased! ????
Ken Gargett Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 answer must be LOTR, even if most people get it wrong. agree with colt. the problem is that probably far more people are going by the films. and the early GF films are classics. the LOTR films also, as they advanced much of what could be done on screen. and are pretty good viewing as well (i do hate the invention of the green ghosts in 3, though - YGNMWT, which stands for you do not mess with tolkien). i'm not too fussed either way with the films when it coms to this vote, but the world would be a much poorer place if tolkien had not written LOTR. i enjoyed the godfather book when it came out (or thereabouts) but it hardly ranks with tolkien. one more point - i wonder how many people voting for the godfather could list, without googling, how many godfather books there were (more than one?) and and name them? i'd bet very few. and if you can't do that, then surely you should not vote for it. 2 1
Bucky McSwensen Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Thanks @Ken Gargett for the reality check. I was gonna say godfather because they could remake lotr movies but the godfather will never be matched. Books and all...? Lotr all day
inter4alia Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 LOTR. Easy. This is a poll about the books not the movies, correct?
Fuzz AI Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Lord of the Rings is a literary classic, The Godfather is not. The follow on Godfather books were written long after the original and films. Tolkien created an entire universe, with characters and history, to build on with future books. And if you're going on the amount of story history, adaptations, sales, awards, etc, Lord of the Rings wins it. 2
Lomey Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 LOTR for me. Going on movies we are going on 3 apiece. All 3 LOTR movies were good. The Godfather, not so much. Books, not even close. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
duabley Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Voted too soon, the LOTR books cannot be lost! Didn't care too much for the movies (too much Elijah wood), but the books were awesome. However I still cant eat potatoes without at least remembering all the ways to cook em.
Phillys Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 As much as I love the Godfather 1 & 2 movies, if you get rid of the books, LOTR wins it for me, no match. I mean, I could live without the LOTR movies if it meant keeping the Godfather, but losing the book makes it a deal breaker. Although both the books and movies were excellent.
Islandboy Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 This one’s easy for me. I’ve never seen a Godfather movie all the way through - mob movies? Not my thing at all. And honestly, never seen a LOTR movie in it’s entirety either - fantasy? Meh. BUT....there are several references to Lord of the Rings in Led Zeppelin lyrics. Oh hell yeah, we have a winner!
