Bit of a morbid topic, my apologies. My asking the question is inspired by The FOH member health check up thread and also a couple of conversations at work recently. I've made the decision to put one together simply because I have absolutely no desire, in the event of some life changing and catastrophic event, eg stroke, to be subject to a series of aggressive and invasive medical interventions which, while they serve to keep me alive, will also leave me with little dignity and practically zero quality of life, often likely to remain so even with a best case scenario "recovery".

Granted, it's a decision made somewhat easier by working in the field every day and how do you truly know until it's no longer hypothetical, until it really is your backside in the bacon slicer?. But honestly, if I'm ever at a point of needing a tube down my throat to feed me, two more up each nether region orifice to carry my waste away lest my skin burns in my own acid and in a world where I can't even get off the bed, let alone stand up or go for a walk, it's already over.

Be interested to hear your musings, should you have any and wish to share.

My wife and I have one, it is actually called an Advance Healthcare Directive. The name living will was confusing so they changed it. The living will more often means a revocable trust to avoid probate.

I've had some experience with these recently.  Make sure it's clear who makes the DNR assessment too.  And don't make the will too complicated (e.g. if three doctors all confirm...).  It's no fun being on the other side making those decisions for someone.

I'm with Vortigen. I've seen a few who were always saying put me down before I get to the place where there is no quality of life. Then when they got to that place they said this ain't so bad. People change when their mortality is no longer a hypothetical issue. I'm not being critical of living wills or what people think now. I have seen tough talk turn to pleas for help when the reaper arrives.

May we all die in our sleep at a ripe old age.

Yes, we have all the paperwork in place for us or our daughter to manage our estate and healthcare directives as we get older.  There's the revocable trust so that everything gets passed on without probate or taxes and the advanced healthcare directives so our wishes are known.  We recently had to update our paperwork to meet requirements of the state Florida, but during that conversation our lawyer made us aware of how important is to make our some of our requests known to each other and our daughter. He used the example of being put in a nursing home where you really don't want to be or have your life prolonged by either medical treatment or the continued use of prescription medication for things like high blood pressure and cholesterol.

I fly a paraglider on a weekly basis and do long cross country flights. Broke my back once and two near misses on top. I have no need for a “living will” as I understand it, because next time I crash it’ll likely be for good. I have a will so that my wife and daughter knows what values there is in my cigars, my wine and my antique book collection. Just so that my un-trustworthy “friends” will not offer to pay a “nice” price for the stuff. Everything else is owned by my wife anyways ?

I have a detailed will. It was one of my major projects last year.

It was certainly a lot more complex a process than I had envisioned.

My body shall be doused with all my booze and loaded onto a small boat, surrounded by all my cigars. The boat shall be cast out to sea, followed by a storm of flaming arrows, to set it  alight.

Yes, I am overly dramatic. But by god, I love a good show!

I think you are confusing your funeral with a Games of Thrones episode! ??

If you gotta go, go in style!

Though, a "Weekend at Bernie's" style funeral may be a lark. You guys can all have one final drink and smoke with me!

My will states that am to be cremated but a cigar is to be in my mouth and three in my pocket.

No need for a lighter where I am likely to end up :lookaround:

Whoever gets there first, leave the porch light on for the other.  And look on the bright side, at least they have barbecue there.

*In other words a Viking funeral for you AND your cigars...y'know I do believe in respecting the wishes of the dead. I say this because if I were there to be in charge (hypothetically, of course) in seeing to that - I think something would come over me in torching what I know must be a lovely and very rare, hard to find bunch of smokes, y'know! You could arrange to let your friends and close acquaintances just fill your small boat with boxes of Dutch Masters, El Producto's, etc. and let your very valuable prized smokes go to those friends and acquaintances! They'd probably remember you more fondly that way!

Wow, Rob I don't think that's where you'll end up! :devil2:  You've made too many people, mainly us Americans, too happy! But if we may digress a little, here's a teeny bit from yesteryear about worry: Why worry? You only have 2 things to worry about; either you are sick or you are well. If you are well there is nothing to worry about. If you're sick you only have 2 worries; either you will live or you will die. If you die you only have 2 worries; either you will go to Heaven or to Hell. If you go to Heaven you've got nothing to worry about. If you go to Hell you'll be so darn busy shaking hands with friends that you won't have time to worry! So why worry?

In all honesty, when I croak, my funeral is gonna be a big party with food, booze, cigars and lively music. If any attendee walks away sober, I will haunt them for eternity.
