MikeinKS Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Waiting for my New to Cubans sampler is probably going to be more expensive than the sampler itself! I'm just too pumped to just be patient, and I keep buying from my local shop. I picked up a Opus X Forbidden and smoked it last night. Tons of creamy coffee with some white pepper and hints of caramel. Have any of you tried this smoke and, if so, are there any CC's you would compare it to?
KFBR392 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 One of my favorite smokes but there’s no real CC comparison IMO 2
cigcars Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 I've smoked the Opus X's, Forbidden, Lost City, et.al. in order to make sure of forming a fair opinion. They just don't do anything for me whatsoever. I enjoy more so the Don Carlos and other ordinary Fuente cigars, but the Opus' and so on...expensive cost, premium aging prep, etc., etc. they're just "meh" to me. I've traded them for some good regular production Habanas in past years. Any Cubans to compare to them? IMHO, not really.
Stump89 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Also enjoy opus with some age. I find them too peppery and strong when young. I don't find much in the way of CC to compare too either though. 1
DeskSmkr Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Love Opus, haven’t had forbidden yet. Can only compare to the regular Opus X line, and in my opinion, these are different but reminiscent: Vega Robaina - Unicos (most similar yet different) Cohiba - Robusto (similar core or aged tobacco) Montecristo No. 2 (honorable mention but was sweeter/creamier)
Ericbrobes Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Opus is a solid smoke, much different than any CC I've smoked though.
MikeinKS Posted September 23, 2018 Author Posted September 23, 2018 Thank you all for the replies. And I thought golf was gonna be expensive!
BeerPimp Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 I have only had one Opus X and it was a solid smoke. I enjoy a lot of other NC just as much if not more that are way cheaper.
RupertPupkin Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 With the Opus, the pepper/spice seems to overwhelm the other flavours for me.. I’ve never really tried to lay any down for significant time though. Most CCs I’ve had are so well balanced that it’s a tough comparison. 1
DeskSmkr Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I’ll add Romeo y Julieta Belicoso, happens to be on today’s 24:24. Still different than Opus, but nicotine strength was similar for me to FFOX reserve de chateau..as well as intrigue of flavors. Also suggest Trinidad Reyes. Lots of folks say Opus X is peppery, and I believe it is - to their palate. None of my opus experiences have been peppery as a standout. A hint of pepper, sometimes yes, but “pepper bombs” no way, none have been pepper bombs, so for what that’s worth, we can all have opposing experiences that are all individually valid. Maybe Por Larañaga Petite Corona as well. Haven’t smoked one but reviews often cite loads of caramel - with 5 years of age. 1
earthson Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 An Opus made out of CC tobacco? Take the buttery nature of a good Cohiba, add the caramel of a particularly sweet Por Larrañaga, sprinkle the sweet baking spices of a HdM, layer on the floral nature from an aged HdM du Gourmet and give some hints of musk as found in early 2000 Upmanns. Then, add the long, long aging required of early 90s Havanas and you'd be pretty close to my palate. I don't know where I'd grab the sometimes over-powering pepper notes from as I (fortunately) don't find it often in Havanas and Dominican terroir is its own animal.
SigmundChurchill Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 There are so many of these threads about comparing a non Cuban cigar to Cubans. There is no comparison. None of them taste anything like Cuban cigars. That is not to say that I dont like them. There are certain non Cuban cigars that I like. But they dont taste like Cuban cigars, I just like them for what they are. 4
BeerPimp Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 As others have said the Opus X line are some excellent cigars. However, for the price I would rather order CC or purchase several other NC that I like just as much that are much cheaper.
alloy Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Apples and oranges my friend. They do not compare. And delving into the cc scene is a very slippery slope. Once going down that path, it's impossible to come back. And gets expensive. Good Luck.
Çnote Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Opus is a great NC, but very non-CC Atabey, Byron, Viaje & Warped are great NC that are kinda CC, but still not CC.
