How anyone can keep cigars for 5 years it beats me.

Anyway,  glad you enjoyed yours. I had one not so long ago and loved it.

I hate to tell you, but my 2008 cab of PLPC are at their peak, smoking like crème caramel right now. Patience, grasshopper.

The trick is to have enough of them- it's a tough trick, though.

I have a lot of stock I've kept for 20 years now. As long as you have enough to smoke, you get used to the level of self-control required.

There must be some math method to this depending on how fast you smoke, like if I smoke 3 per week that's 6 boxes of 25 per year... That means I've got to go through 30 boxes in 5 years to age nd not touch that box of PLPC

Maybe the simple answer is just to buy 2 boxes of everything for 5 years (or as a general rule for life) that way you'll ensure a running supply of aging inventory

Stick one of the two boxes away, smoke the other And when you're down to your bottom row or final third, time to stock up again

Yeah, that kind of method works pretty well for a lot of people. If you designate some items "off-limits" when you buy them, but make sure you treat yourself to some instant gratification, too, you can actually build up some aging stock pretty quickly.

I have a cab of EML FEB 14. Sampled one recently but not even a hint of caramel.

I have experienced the glory of an aged PLPC in the past so I know what to expect, I guess I'm just going to have to bury them for quite a bit longer.

Have never experienced an aged PLPC but I did just buy my first cab, JUN 17.  Yes waiting another 4 years seems like a long time, but I have enough other smokes on hand to the point where I'm ok with burying these in the bottom of my tupperdor and trying one every year until they taste great for my tastes.  I also smoke maybe 4 or 5 cigars a week, so that helps keep me from blowing through my supply

I've had 3 from my 2014 cab (brother technically had one of those).  They aren't ready yet.  First one last year was kind of bland and unremarkable.  The one I had this year was much more interesting but hadn't got the sweet spot yet.

I have an EML May 14, guess I'll have to try one tonight.

What about the Piccadors on the 24:24? Will they turn into a caramel delight?

I also stock a few boxes at all times, not as good as the PLPC imho but good. They're not old enough to tell what they're like with age.

@Ritch Supposedly aging cabinets of 50 is preferred because of the number of cigars all together blending tobacco and oils together while aging creates a better aged smoke. Also the selection of smokes selected for the cabinet at the factory is supposed to be better as well. All of this is subjective based on what people taste and each individual smoker's opinion.

I always doubted the theory that they pick the best for the cabs, but I could be wrong. I think it's just as much of a crap shoot as buying any other box.

I have heard the theory that aging in wooden cabs, be they 25 or 50 count, is better than aging in dress boxes.  But I think one would have to have a pretty refined palate to be able to tell the difference between which cigar came out of which box.  Again, I could be wrong.  Probably am.

So much of it is personal preference, and mental masturbation, whatever our OCD tendencies lead us to believe makes for a better experience is what we're going to do. And it's allllll good :ok:

Not really true. Cabs are much more porous than it might seem. I would say there may be a slight advantage in the long term (10+ years) due to the improved cigar-to-cigar contact but it's negligible.

It's generally understood that varnished 8-9-8 boxes are the best for long-term storage, followed by foil packs and then varnished SBN boxes.

Some of the misunderstanding stems from the fact that prior to the early 2000s blends for the same cigar were slightly different for dress box and cab versions, the cab versions typically being stronger, thus benefiting from more aging in the eyes of many. Many people believed the packaging format of cabs was therefore designed for aging when in reality is is only marginally more beneficial for aging.

The trick for me is picking cigars that I really like and adding them to my 'purchase' list every year. For me it's Monte 2, a few boxes of Monte 4, PSD4, PLPC, Bolivar PC/BF/RC, Upmann 46/50/54 etc. Every year I buy those boxes guaranteed on top of what else I may be interested in or tempted by 24:24 and toss them in my 150qt 'aging chest' (coolerdor). When my current box expires from my Wineador, I replenish it with a box that I purchased several years back. My wineador holds roughly 600 so there's no way I'll smoke through it in a years time, so everything usually hits 4-5 years by the time it gets added. That paired with my compulsiveness lead me to have a marvelous stock in wait for me. Let it be known my wife does not support any of what I have just typed lol
