Let me start by saying that I am completely reliant upon our member small dog specialists

Background.

My mum (80) and my dad (85) pulled me aside last week and said they saw a dog on a TV commercial and that they want that dog.  I said they couldn't have that specific dog but I will try and find the same one.  I was given until September 29th (Mums birthday)  to deliver the said bundle of Joy

"so mum....which commercial was the dog on"

"I can't remember ....but there was a big man in it".

"what was the commercial for?"

"I think it was dog food".

So I spent some time tracking down current commercials with cute dogs in them and found the right one. It has been confirmed by my parents.  The commercial was for pet insurance.

The dog must be a spitting image. A clone of the dog below.

Make no mistake about it.....If I get it wrong....there will be no coming back from this. My mum is kind and loving all the way until you screw up. Then it is all kathy Bates in the movie "Misery".

Step one.

What the hell type of dog is this? All small white dogs look the same to me

I thank you in advance!

Looks like a Westie to me. West Highland Terrier, that is.

Was the ad for this company? Definitely a Westie, if so!

That looks to be it Iain!

The commercial was this one.

Ears are flopped over. Short legs. Lhasa apso? Shih tzu? Or some variety. With a puppy cut. That's my guess anyway

We got our last two corgi's from either Facebook corgi group or Craigslist (ISO ad).  Plenty of young dogs looking to be rehomed or rescued of every breed.  Usually free or for small nominal fee.  Keep in mind there is no such thing a free dog.  Most females will not be spaded which ain't cheap.

You'd be surprised what you can find when looking at shelters and rescue organizations. Supporting breeders is something I can never do...

Exactly. My 2 dogs were both rescues that were abandoned or dumped by people picking up dogs like a disposable toy. These are living creatures and commitments, not goldfish. I will NEVER get a dog from a puppy mill, pet store, breeder (pure or designer mutt), etc. There’s way too many abandoned and neglected pets that deserve a solid home. I’d suggest looking at rescues.

As per earlier comments, it doesn’t look like a Westie which would have ears that stick up (see pic below) rather than ears that flop down like the dog in the ad. My guess is that it’s a cross between a Maltese and a Lhasa Apso.

My humble advice for your parents would be - don't go just by looks!

Well, you have been a dog-owner yourself, Rob, so not telling you any news here: Check out typical breed's character and what your parents can or are willing to handle, and what fits into their current life. Never do the mistake to underestimate small dogs in their needs for activity and brain work! If your parents are still active and mobile, so may be the dog.

But be realistic in all practical aspects - and with all respect - at their advanced age, all they won't be looking for is a "problem" dog, a dog requiring a lot of excercise or a dog requiring intense maintenance such as coat care, like all those of the Bichon group (well, you can always get them cut short, but still). And - sorry to be so clear here in one aspect : All terriers, even well-behaved, even small races, are a NO-NO for them!

The animal-shelter lane already suggested by some is a very good way of becoming acquainted with particular dogs. With grown-up dogs, other than with pups, you see what you get, and you will get the staff's specialist assessment and honest recommendation. Most centers even offer dog-walking options in a form of godparenthood. By that you are given time before making a decision.

...and no - most certainly not a Westie there.  ;)

Try to check out rescues in your area or your parents area if they aren’t the same. You can really find some great dogs in shelters.

There are loads of rescue dogs available and I'm sure there are rescue organizations that are wonderful. There are also increasingly more unethical and nefarious rescue dog organizations popping up. At least in Eastern Massachusetts there are. I know of three people who have had trouble with such organizations and our veteranarian has been telling people to be careful. Just sayin'.

All the dogs I've ever owned in my life were strays that I adopted off the street. I've been doing such since I was 9. Of course, you can't save them all - but these that I took in checked out pretty well. It was the one dog family that we ended up with that belonged to a man in the area that turned out to be problem dogs that we had to surrender. It wasn't their owners' fault. But I did learn about females, that they can be excessively jealous and so on. I would say, play it by ear, Rob. I'm certain you'll find an appropriate doggie for your folks!

You know, at 80 and 85 the old folks should have the dog they want.

85 is the new 75!

Many thanks for the input and leads.

My mum has her heart set on one. That is what she will be getting (or close).  A Westie it will be. I will take a tour through the RSPCA this Saturday to see if there is anything I could pass off as one. Otherwise I will be driving the 3 hours to Kingaroy (thanks Fuzz).

Sorry, it’s not a Westie. It’s a mixed breed. Maltese and possibly Shit-Zu(?)

You're wrong.

It's a Westie ok.....and if by some miracle any of you meet my Mum ......you WILL ask how her Westie is going.
