Fosgate Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 I’m about 1/3 of the way through a precipe and noticed a fowl taste. Looked at the back end and noticed it looked a little juicy. Run my thumbnail across it and come up with a tar substance. Never smoked a cigar that did this before. It’s about 3yrs old and spent it’s life in a temp and humidity controlled wineador. Thoughts on prevention or in general?
THEMISCHMAN Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 I’ve had the same issue before. When it’s happened I’ll cut a little more off the top and purge the cigar occasionally. Since I’ve lowered the RH in my storage I’ve noticed it happens far less. These are just a few things that have worked for me. Tar build up sucks.
SigmundChurchill Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 I also think it is more common with a punch cut, or when I cut a figurado too close to the end, leaving a small surface area for the smoke to come out.
Cayman17 Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 It happens. Sometimes if the draw is too tight, or the opening at the top is too small, tar can accumulate at the lip.

This. Use a bigger punch of a guillotine. It’s because the smoke gets bottlenecked.
HDGSN Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 I'll get tar stains on my lips that I can taste from just the wrapper, usually from punch cuts. Buildups like that, not so much. But the result still tastes bad.
PapaDisco Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Those super tarry cigars can be real flame throwers if you purge and light the purge. Exciting stuff!
cigaraholic Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Your susposed to clip the cigar....not make a tar hole? 1
Habana Mike Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 I've encountered this on occasion. Mostly Dominican/Nicaraguan than other tobaccos. Restricted draws from a punch or V cut tend to exacerbate it. Above points regarding clipping a bit and purging will work wonders. Careful you're not smoking too fast either as that can cause tar build-up as well.
fitzy Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 I've had that with some aged PL Monte's. with that narrow of a ring gauge it built up to the point where I couldn't draw any smoke through. A quick clip of the tar filled head and I was back in business.
JohnInCleveland Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Interestingly I use a punch cut on smaller cigars like Principe's and it's the only time I can remember getting that tar build up. Strange indeed...
cfc1016 Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Fast smoking plus bottlenecked smoke. Guillotine and patience put a stop to it.
RazorbackFan Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Perhaps it’s just the magical el Principe pancake/molasses essence seeping out. 2 1
Rupe Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 From my experience, this seems to happen more when I smoke during very humid conditions. More so when combined with a cooler temperature. Sometimes a cigar with a tighter draw and/or smoking at a faster pace will also contribute to the problem.
zeedubbya Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 Happens on Cohiba Shorts to me. I just take a rag/napkin/paper towel and wipe it off and continue. Seems to fix the issue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
