My parents are going on a Rhine river cruise and will be starting in Amsterdam.  I did a search on the forum and came up with a couple shop suggestions (PGC Hajenius, LCdH), and my dad said maybe he'll pick something up for me.  Does PGC have a good selection of Cubans?  Someone suggested Cigaragua, but it looks like they carry a lot of sticks I can get here in the states. Is there anything he should know about bringing cigars (Cubans) back to the U.S. (i.e. fees, etc)?  If it's too much of a hassle he probably won't mess with it, and I wouldn't expect him to.

Thanks.

Each person is allowed 100 cigars (Cuban or otherwise) duty free.  Have him declare them and there will be no issue.  Over the limit and duty may be added but it is rare from my experience but not unheard of.

At this time it is perfectly legal to bring Cuban Cigars into the US for personal consumption.

As long as he carries them back into the country in his accompanying luggage and they are for personal use, he should be fine. I doubt US Customs will bat an eye if he brings you back a box or two from Amsterdam.

The LCDH has an excellent range of pretty much all cubans. Hajenus is a smaller range but sometimes have some LE's/LCDH that are not always in stock in the LCDH. Both good choices, Hartmanns on Beethovenstraat is also a good store. There is also a davidoff shop opposite the LCDH but that has a pretty small range. Cigaragua is all Nicaraguan sticks so if you're US based most of their stock is probably already available to you.

Legally, they can't say one word until you go over the duty limit.  Over the duty limit,  they could theoretically make the case that they are not for personal consumption or whatever other BS they can come up.  Best case, one would pay the duty but who knows with those people.

By the way, your mother can also bring back her own allotment of duty free cigars.....:lol3:

Disclaimer:  I am not a lawyer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.:innocent:

I went to Amsterdam LCDH - great selection.  Ask about special stuff - they had Talisman's in the back.  No problem whatsoever bringing them back into US.

Thanks, guys.  I made a note of the shops and gave it to my dad if he has the opportunity to stop in...hopefully, at the end of the trip before coming home.  Otherwise, it will be 2 weeks of unmaintained cigars.  LOL

LCDH was huge and had a good selection but nothing too aged. They only sold singles of the RE's. You cannot smoke here unless you are a member, even if you buy cigars there.

Hartman cigars I've gotten some great stuff from, Dip RE's, and some aged 1980's H Upmans. Also very friendly staff.

PGC has a good selection of CC and NC, nothing too rare or aged, although they do carry the RE's and were happy to sell me a box of LGC Platinos.

When I was there in Jan, the only place that had LEs and REs was Hajenius. LCDH had a good range of standard production sticks, and a few collector’s items as well.

I was at the LCDH and Hartmans 10 days ago.   Both had a great selection but they are about a 30 minute walk from where the boats would dock.  Well worth it if they get a chance to visit them.  The LCDH vacuum packed my boxes, I only bought a few singles from Hartmans.

When were you there?  I was at the LCDH in Amsterdam in January and visited a couple of times.  Bought a box but also a couple of singles and smoked those right away in the downstairs lounge.  No question about membership.  Had a couple of nice people in the lounge on both occasions and smoked and had a good chat both times.

PGC Hajenius is a very historic store that is 100's years old.  I think your parents would find that experience more interesting than going into a LCDH.  The PGC Hajenius branded cigars are worth picking up as well.  The are blend of tobacco from just about everywhere including Cuba.  Fun smoke and different from probably what you are accustomed to smoking currently.

I was there in April, bought 10 singles and asked about the lounge but he said members only.

I've experienced both scenarios.  Lets just say, buy big and dress nice, you can smoke downstairs.  Act American and look like you've just been to a coffee shop, nee bedankt!

I wouldn't say that I was dressed very well. Just jeans, boots and a windcheater.  However, I can speak Dutch, albeit badly.
