Recommended Posts

Hey all

At my local LCDH they have a lot of older r and j cigars from sale with biz dates 99 - 03 a lot of the boxes are have not as bright and vibrant as some of the newer boxes anyone know if the fluorescent lights of a walk-in humidor can bleach the colors?

Box or packaging discoloration per se doesn't preclude them from being genuine. The fact that these are at a LCDH gives them more credibility.

I would say that these are probably genuine unless there's other evidence indicating otherwise.

  • JohnS changed the title to Discolored Romeo y Julieta boxes

Wrappers may fade over time, especially if the boxes are open to sunlight. That said, many wrappers are lighter than others even when new.

Well worth trying a couple of singles to see how they smoke. You may have hit a goldmine.

I think he meant the boxes themselves, not the cigars inside. While colors may fade a bit over time, severe fading indicates sunlight exposure. If that’s the case, I’d be careful since the sticks would have experienced significant temperature swings and who knows what else was wrong with the storage over time. I’ve seen this a lot on boxes from Greece and Cyprus and a lot of them were ruined.

Box fading is due to either:

  • Poor print quality (rare)
  • Sun exposure
  • Water exposure

Check the cigars. Specifically the aroma (if they look fine). if no aroma or a funky aroma, walk away.

.....and if you do purchase, ask for a discount.

funky aroma

I always find 'funky' a really difficult word when describing the smell of vintage cigars. As I believe there is a 'good funk' and a 'bad funk'. Obviously everyone would agree that any smell of mould, or that frail dead smell you get off cigars that have been desiccated,   but how do we describe "the good funk"

To me I always get an vaguely minty, sweet cedar, umami aroma from well aged cigars.

Interestingly (for me anyway) I've just looked up the origins of the work 'funk' and it originally just meant tobacco smoke

For the benefit of the potential buyer, El Pres, what would you suggest the smell of good vintage cigars to be?......what is the 'good funk'

Like rob says box fading can be attributed to those 3 factors

my money would be on exposure to light weather it be sun or otherwise

flourescent tubes do emit a amount of UV radiation

I know your shop @Tollickd, was there about a week ago and I passed on those largely due to the aroma when I cracked a few boxes. It’s exciting when you find those but don’t let it get the better of you. I did pick up a recent box of wide Churchills from the other LCDH with beautiful wrappers but I had to go through 6 boxes before I found the one. They had some trini fundies at yours that I wish I bought more of fwiw.

Yes I picked up a nine 10 box of short Churchill’s very nice wrappers! I will give the older boxes a wide birth then stick to the newer boxes.

Yes I picked up one of the trini fundies week

Next week I am going to pick up a box of the LCDH SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LA HABANA OFICIOS CIGAR I saw at a good price
