I've been off the forum for a bit, while travelling, so forgive me if this has been covered recently, but I've got the 2nd of two R&J Churchills to smoke and I'm after a great drink pairing for it. I think the stick is mid '17 vintage. The first one smoked (a few months back) was a bit young, but with some very promising notes: light coffee and cream, a little zing of spice here and there... Went with a chocolate stout on that occasion but it didn't marry too well.

I'll pretty much drink anything, so if anyone currently smoking these has any advice on a nice combo, then I'd love to hear it. Otherwise I'll just do my own research, which won't be too horrible, I suppose... ;)

Cheers,

Moe.

I like water always to cleanse the pallet. Usually a Dalmore 18 is pretty nice with the Cherries & Chocolate.

Experiment with Red Wine even Champagne or perseco. Coke out of a can is a go to for me as well

Always water for me, usually along with something else. Ive been smoking a fair number of 14-16 RyJ churchills lately and I like them with a nice crisp cold pilsner. The opposing bitter/crisp flavor of the beer compliments the smooth, creamy, sweet cigar very well.

Water is my favorite because it does not mask the true character of the cigar, but what fun is that?  :buddies:

I heartily recommend a Haitian rum (or any rum from a former French colony distilled with sugarcane). They're typically dry vs sweet.  I thought I hated rum for years, but turns out its just those distilled from molasses.  Barbancourt 8-year is my favorite based upon local availability.

This is a classic cigar that goes well with a Bordeaux wine.  One with more Cab in it.  That being said, water works.  Many get too carried away with cigar and drink pairings.  Smoke and drink what you like; just as fitting a pair as any expert could recommend.

I like this suggestion quite a bit. Partial to a rum old fashioned, and I tried Plantation rum in Portland, ME, when there recently--cracker drop!

Always like a nice vintage port with a R&J cherry bomb?

Same. Very partial to a nice port. :)

I feel that a nice hoppy ipa resets my palet everytime I take a sip. This helps me lock on to more flavors that might normally hide if only drinking water, or something more powerful in flavor than the cigar itself, like coffee. Perhaps a citrus ipa like a deschutes fresh squeezed or tropicannon.

If I want to go with an adult beverage, I like a Bellhaven Black Scottish Stout.  The bittersweet chocolate/cream of the stout works great with just about any cigar but I really like it with the profile of RyJ.  If not that then espresso cortado.  The rich coffee with the floater of cream (preferred) or half & half is great.  And always a glass of water to refresh and "start over".  Enjoy your trip!

Old tom ruby porter/ale. Goes wonderfully well, with any rosado wrapper.  A lovely match,,,   but don't blame me when your absolutely wasted after four bottles. very gluggable, but a cruel mistress!

Mother of God... That looks and sounds amazing. I'm definitely on a mission to track this down over the weekend. If I can recall anything at all I'll review post-hangover. Cheers, man.

I have a mid 17 box, and coffee goes well, as does cola. I'm sure some of the other members can help you with recs for harder stuff.

Balvenie 14 year Caribbean cask. I have a box of 2014 RyJ Churchills and the rum notes with the scotch and cigar... one of my favorite pairings.
