99call Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 So, some here may not of heard of Logan Paul, and dear god I wish I could turn back the clock and be one of you. I wont go into what he did, or who he is, as I find him repulsive, and if you should choose to, you can easily check him out for yourself. My question is this. When you have the old adage "any media, is good media", and you have people who can monetise that buzz, does this equal the end of decency? As a hypothetical example. 1- I film myself gatecrashing a funeral, where I mock grief stricken mourners, and laugh in their face millions of people watch it and I get paid £££££££££ 2- After social uproar, I film an insincere film of me apologising for what i'd done millions of people watch is and I get paid £££££££££ 3- Repeat Now I'm not suggesting creating a media profile like Logan Paul has, is something you can do overnight, he has probably spent all of his adult life thinking of what vile things he can do to people, and produced and edited 1000s of hrs of these videos and piece by piece upping his viewership. It gives me a very harrowing though though. When the youth of today start daydreaming of what they want to be when they are older, is there going to be some that are going to say. "I want to push old ladies out of their wheelchairs, and film it" Is it just me, or is the world going bananas?
Stump89 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Agreed 100%. I have an 8 and 5 year old who know who this guy is, and I had the talk with them about this whole situation and why I will no longer allow anyone to support him in any way. The thing that really gets me is that the media platform where this was posted took no action whatsoever. This guy is the golden child apparently, and they promoted this video by putting it on the trending page. It was only after the backslash that Logan Paul took down his own video and issued his half hearted apology. No one that is a part of the media platform flagged this video when it was posted, and I'm sure only a slap on the wrist was given because of the money they have tied up in ad revenue through him. 1

Yep, along with terrorist videos, they are dragging their feet, as they are realising their carefree business now has strings attached.

Seems to me the root of the problem is a serious lack of responsible parenting such as this ^

That they are simply going to walk out their front door with a camera and create havok/victimise people, so they can get paid?
Andy04 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 The worst thing, he gets paid for each view of his apology.

It is what you make of it. i.e. "the more I think about it the bigger it gets." There will always be those that are brought up right, where their parents will quite them and steer them in the right direction. It is purely a numbers game. The fact the media put so much attention on it is throwing fuel on the fire. It's irresponsible. But, that has become the norm. I am not concerned by it. Only read very little about it, due to my lack of interest in it. This has always existed. It is in loads of kids. It is normal human behaviour. This kid had an audience. It allows us to learn more about ourselves. Learn a collective lesson. Probably a good thing it happened now. On a slow news week. So everyone got a chance to chat about it, and change course a little for their kids. Other than that. It is of little importance. Edit note: never heard of him before that. This really put him on a global level. Smart kid. Bit twisted. Nothing to really worry about. 1

All that I would add is, on that basis you could argue that nothing is of importance, as long as it doesn't enter your life or effect you directly. It's less Logan Paul and his suicide forest antics, it's more him going around central Japan taking the piss out of innocent people on their way to work etc. Here in the UK we had a mass of people 'Happy Slapping' people, which loosely translated as beating them to a pulp whilst videoing it on phones. That had zero effect on your life and mine, what I would say though is that, if everyone was socially apathetic these things would go unchecked until they actually did enter our life. Yes we all like to think we could happily protect ourselves if someone wanted to victimise us, but I would argue that it's flatly unacceptable. I don't find him clever, I find him rich, but there is nothing in him that I find aspirational. he's a bottom feeder. What I find troubling, and reason I don't get, it is that millions of people love this stuff.

helix Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 Just ignore this S media dribble and it's no matter to you. Like they used to say 'today's newspaper tomorrows ass wipe" . 1

cmbarton Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 I had never heard of the guy before and a quick look at one of his videos told me everything I needed to know. Sort of validates why I don’t let my 8 and 6 year old daughters anywhere near YouTube or social media for that matter. They’ll be exposed to this sort of idiocy eventually, and hopefully by then I have instilled a clear sense of class and respectfulness so that they recognize types like these and steer clear of them. A sign of the times, indeed. A friend’s daughter wants to be a YouTube “personality” when she grows up, and whenever she means to say “Goodbye” she says, “If you liked it, click ‘Subscribe.’” I wish I were joking.
JohnS Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 Well YouTube have taken action just yesterday... In light of recent events, we have decided to remove Logan Paul’s channels from Google Preferred,” a YouTube spokesman said. “Additionally, we will not feature Logan in season 4 of Foursome and his new Originals are on hold.” The article goes on further to explain... Google Preferred aggregates YouTube’s top content into easy-to-buy packages for advertisers. Channels in Google Preferred are often considered “brand safe” for advertisers, meaning companies don’t have to worry about their brands being affiliated with controversial or offensive content. Channels also benefit in that they receive the most lucrative and highest number of ads on their videos and in turn make more money. Foursome is a Red original series, YouTube’s ad-free subscription service, and all the original content Paul was discussing with YouTube is also on hold. Meaning, the sequel to his popular Red original movie The Thinning is also on hold. Yep, it's ripples travelling through the youth, are real. Some might say good values will win out. but it's nature and nurture. I like to believe everyone has a bit of good and bad in them, but we pass through life and are guided by which paths we want to take by role models, family etc. If there is a generation of kids coming through that are just fobbed off by bad parents, handing them ipads and telling them to be quiet, Then effectively their being raised by the internet. Youtube and the internet has just let this scumbag off. He still has his 'job' and gets to earn 9,000,000 a year by walking around OUR home towns, and treating people like crap. because it's sensationalist and get's hits. Youtube has effectively just said that it doesn't mind if it's employee's laugh at people who've killed themselves..............way to go. Utter utter scumbags 1

If this guy had built a profession for 30 years, then made a mistake, I wouldn't think it right that it would be taken away from him, just like that. Put what this guy does is as complex as farting in ziplock bags for a living, and selling them to freaks. His presence in this world should of been like a freak wave, it was big and destructive, but now it should be over. 1
JohnS Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 Of course, that makes sense @99call. I didn't realise this guy's massive income. Yes, it's disproportionate in importance to other careers. I couldn't believe he got 40 million views for an apology video either. I guess that just speaks volumes about this guy's audience.

Utter utter scumbags I don't mean to nit pick but: Their- Ownership There- Location They're- They Are I think you're over reacting a smidge I'd never heard of Logan Paul before but anyone who can collect and maintain millions of subscribers and catalogue billions of views across his channel is not some punk kid with a video camera. His shtick is sensationalist garbage but, in my opinion but its no more harmful to the fabric of society that cat videos. He is an entertainer, and someone must think he is worth what he's being paid, hell, Kim Kardashian gets paid 10 times that and the only reason anyone knows who she is, is due to a leaked Sex Tape.

It's less to do about the suicide forest stuff, and more to do with the fact this guy has tapped into the fact his viewers are little kids, and probably want to do some pretty nasty adolescent things, but afraid to, so get off vicariously by watching this guy do it. The message from the professional grown up world (YouTube) is that if you do all this petulant vile stuff, you will get rewarded for it, to the tune of 9,000,000 a year. Ultimately all we can do is be decent ourselves, raise our children to be decent, and support decent behaviour from others. But, again I do not share the opinion that apathy that the world is inevitably fall to crap, is the most inspirational path forward.
