Rafael Gonzalez MARQUEZ - Nice Surprise

Recommended Posts

The "Marquez" is part of the brand logo, not the name of the cigar. RG started out as La Flor de Marquez (I think - I should research more before posting, I did this the other day too about aging RGPCs). The Perla isn't one I've tried, but it's on the hit list now as I love the RGPC and Monte 5s. Global stocks of this cigar may take a dive...

RG is indeed an underrated marca. And I'm fine with that. The more people catch on to them.. The less there will be for me of the aged variety. ;)

So true!

While you're at it... go buy some RG Petit Coronas & QdO Coronas.

Tongue-in-cheek comment, man. Chill.

So true @shlomo! However, @NSXCIGAR mentioned in another thread that minutos haven't been deleted in the last 15 years (if I recall correctly) so I'm hopeful these little beauties have more life in them yet!

That's right--it appears that the only Minutos ever discontinued post-Rev is the Punch Tres Petit Corona in 2002. I believe the only vitola that's never been cut from any marca post-Rev is the Robusto, although the Trini Robusto T was cut, but that was technically a Del Valle vitola--not a Robusto.

It's just too bad the OP's cigar isn't a Minutos! Looks to me to be the Perla.

The RGPC has been really getting some very high marks recently, and remains an under-the-radar insider's cigar--something it's fans seem to prefer. A similar cigar is the Sancho Panza Non-Plus. I sampled one with a few years on it the other day, and it was brilliant. Not a big fan of the profile, but I can appreciate when a cigar is full of character and knows what it wants to be. All sea salt/driftwood, cream and toasted tobacco--classic SP profile.

The fact that a minuto has not been discontinued in a while is nothing more than dumb luck. If it's not generating enough profit, it will be cut.

My comment was in reference to the entire RG marca as well as any other cigar that ppl might wish were less popular so it would be easier to get.

To get back on track, I am one of the few ppl who does not like the Perlas and always reach for something else instead. Still, it does make me happy to see them introduce a new small cigar to the masses and most are pleased with it.

Happy smoking

The Lonsdale is RG's  "flagship" cigar.

Not a Marca known for big ring gauge cigars.  I can see how this alone could put the whole Marca at jeopardy with Habanos.  If Habanos were to drop a Marca, RG unfortunately would be a top contender.

Theorically. In the facts, the lonsdales went to the toilet sometime during the late 90's, and it's one of the cigars that NEVER recovered from the 1999/2000 catastrophe…

In 2003/2004 one could sometimes find some with an attractive wrapper, but even when they drew normally the taste was off… The Molinos was a better choice if you wanted a lonsdale, or the corona extra if you wanted a Rafael Gonzales…

Yes the rg perlas are tasty lil spark plugs.  I smoked the or examples at my wedding during cocktail hour on the penthouse roof with a few botl's.  It was 46 degrees (Queens, NY in March) and these fit the bill.

The pc's imho are great especially since 2013.

I am am still sad at the deletion of the corona extra; toro size.

Cheers,

Steven

The Perlas only entered stage about four years ago. So, unless sales developed miserably, I can see no reason why HSA should cut them soon again. Seems they had something in mind by adding that format to the vitolario of the marca...
