Your Best Stick of the Month? - July 2016

Recommended Posts

Curious what you're smoking and what have been your standouts, say, in the last couple weeks (for the month of July 2016). Post year and box codes if ya got 'em!

Me? I've had 3 sticks in the last couple weeks, an 08 Por Larranaga MonteCarlo, an 06 Cohiba Lancero and an 08 Bolivar Petit Corona.

Ranked in order from best to worst -

Boli PC - Man what a great smoke, I love a cigar that demands so much of my attention that I catch myself looking at it just after the draw and watching the micro air currents carry the smoke away, while looking somewhat in wonder of how a leaf could be this good. This stick was a cream bomb, with a bit of cedar, muted nuts and no pepper whatsoever. I caught myself swilling the smoke just before the exhale. Nubbed that rascal...

PLMC - This one surprised me, hadn't had one from my stock in a couple years, and remembered them to be light-medium with a little cream. Not this one, it was pretty strong, lashing of heavy tobacco and fermented pepper. For such a small ring gauge I found myself wanting to "turn down the volume" which amazed me. It made it to the early final 3rd before I smashed it into ole Mr Stinky.

Cohiba Lancero - Biggest disappointment of the week. Well aged, beautiful cigar kept at 62-65% RH. Tight as heck! (the bane of the long and skinny) Smoked nice but was very uninteresting and lasted to the mid second third before I lost interest. My Dad was enjoying one with me and wanted to run a 1/4" drill bit through his to get it to draw. Certainly not the best example of this stick.

Here's a shot of ole Lancero..

Cheers!

I had a 1998 Monte esp no1 that was epic and a more current esp1 I found in singles drawer, no clue of year, that was also pretty darn good. Got to say, every one of these I've smoked, regardless of

Best of the month would be   Hoyo DC 1998 Hoyi Churchill 1998 Davidoff No.1 1980's Montecristo No.2 1996

Clearly yesterday's 2002 CoLa. I'm still drooling...

Though I had an excellent Dip 2 and a wonderful Cohiba Piramides, it's got to be the Partagas Serie D No. 4, OPA AUG 09.  A gem of a robusto, with brilliance and heft.  Not just the smoke of the month, but one of the best smokes of the year.  Sweetness, bell pepper, a little exotic spice, a touch of leather, cream, a bit of salt.  Flavors shifting fluidly and beautifully.  Maintained intensity and coherence all the way to the nub.

Gorgeous shot @planetary! I have a few of those in my Humi that have been forgotten I'm sure. I'll have to dig them up! A Cigar has to be pretty special for me to nub it. I'm very sensitive the the acrid/formaldehyde profile that occurs quickly in many young or poorly blended Cigars. Once I get that profile, I'm out. Don't care what name is on the stick.

@mdinius Ho-Lee-Lord! Got to get me one of those fancy corn-on-the-cob nub tools! Frankly I've never seen one of those. Pretty cool! Legendary Nub by the way!

I am, too.  I've chucked many a stick at the 2/3 mark for this reason.

BTW, used one of these on a SLR Regio for breakfast this morning, which also happens to be my best cigar of July so far.

Though, I'm hoping that tonight's Cohiba Piramides will take the throne.  Celebrating my 50th birthday today. :)
