Ken Gargett Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 THE WORST EVER DRAFT PICK i know most people will go ryan leaf. some might be so cruel as to mention a lesser moment for the skins - RG3. none comes close. the worst pick in history was... Cal Rossi. way back in '46 the second worst pick in history... Cal Rossi. in '47. making him the only person ever drafted twice (seriously, you could not make this up). and the skins made both picks. in 1946, we had the 9th pick. we chose running back, Cal Rossi from the Univ of California. apparently, a terrific player. only one small problem. he was not eligible. skins had failed to check that. whoops. never fear, the following year he was eligible and this time, the skins had the 4th pick overall. so we grabbed him. not letting him get away twice. the only problem this time was that Mr Rossi had absolutely no intention of playing football. no one had bothered to ask him. so we gave up two first round picks, a 4th and a 9th, only to make a complete fool of ourselves. even ryan leaf would have been better. 1
NicPac Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Sounds like they really crossed their T's and dotted their I's on that one
Corylax18 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Wow. I was marveling with my brother last night about how they used to knock out 10 or 12 round drafts in a single day. With Paper, Pencil and Phones. No computers, anything. I guess some mistakes were made........ Don't Forget Ja Marcus Russell though. The Raiders gave him 32 mil guaranteed before they realized they're mistake. RG3 Only cost you guys about 21 Mil and the next two drafts. The Browns really got a winner with Manziel too, a third or fourth round talent that clearly had no intention of playing pro football either. Maybe somebody should have checked with him too?
BigRay023 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Don't forget Jamarcus Russel! POS! Doh! Just saw above post! I was so mad about that one and Robert Gallery! No.2 overall pic a frikkin Offensive tackle!? Not hating on tackles, that's what I played in highschool. But he couldn't block a milenial walking down the street absorbed in his iPhone!
anacostiakat Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 We do have a long record of horrible draft picks. I remember Gary Beban and Heath Schuler to name a couple.
ChefBoyRG54 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 I could list out the Lions first round picks one by one and the vast majority would qualify. Hmmmm...should we take another WR? Not this year? How about a tight end? Great idea! 2

How about a tight end? Great idea! I would say the Lions worst 1st round pick was a toss up between Heisman winner QB Andre Ware and WR Charles Rodgers. It's a good time to be a Lions fan ChefBoy, get back in the wagon...
rp99pts Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 I went to WSU with Ryan Leaf. He was a douchebag in college as well. Total attitude, immature, everyone knew he would bomb in the NFL... 1

Only thing I know is, bet against the lions and over time you can't lose
DoubleDD Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 It was tough choosing someone from the Bears since there is such a great plethora of options but Rashaan Salaam sticks out followed by Rex Grossman.
Duffer Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Wow Ken, I never heard that story before. Being a life-long Giant fan from NJ and having gone to college in Washington, DC during their Super Bowl year in 1987, I've really grown to dislike the Skins. The owner back in 1946-47 must have been a relative of Daniel Snyder judging by those draft picks!
kuma Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Looks like Cowboys want to get back to a running game with their first pick.

Check out Joe Moore, Mike Hull, Curtis Enis and Michael Haynes (whom they actually picked 7 or 8 players ahead of Grossman).

He told them not to draft him and if they did he wouldn't play. But they did it any way.

I would agree, a physical specimen. He was without question one of the best athletes in the history of American sports. I can remember it like it was yesterday, Bo throwing the most insane toss from the center field wall to home plate on a rope to get the runner out. No hop mind you. Best throw in the history of baseball.
skalls Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Bo was so freakishly athletic. Too bad about his hip, he'd have had a chance to be in the hall of fame for both the nFL and MLB. While not a draft pick, my team trading for hershel walker helped contribute to the juggernaut that the cowboys were for a while.
Ken Gargett Posted May 1, 2016 Author Posted May 1, 2016 Used to be, but they forced me not to be over the past 15 years. Barry! Barry! Barry!!! that would be joe barry who was so impressive in taking your blokes to 0-16 as defence co-ordinator that we thought we'd knock back wade phillips and take joe. 1

Best throw in the history of baseball. Yep, Bo was the real deal. I don't think anyone in history has been as good in two professional sports. The dedication, skill and talent it takes to excel in only one pro sport is tremendous. Two--well, that's once in several generations. As far as Cal Rossi, you can't really hold it against the guy--he had nothing to do with it. So while technically the "worst pick" I'd definitely have to say Ryan Leaf was the biggest "bust" pick of all time, and it was all on him. Good grief, the guy ended up in prison for breaking into houses to steal drugs. Truly unbelievable.

Truly unbelievable. don't blame rossi for a second. i blame the circus that is so often the skins front office. hopefully it got sacked both years. this was about the pick itself so is about the decision making of the front office/coach/GM etc. very different to biggest bust. yes, leaf hard to go past.
