I recently have acquired a real taste for NC Hoya De Montereys, in particular the Excalibur line. I've never had a Cuban version and was wondering what everyone thought about Cuban HDMs verses the non Cubans. Does anybody have an opinion?

They have nothing in common except the name, I'm afraid.

I found them both to be brown and somewhat flammable. So that's two things . . . tongue.png

Can't comment on HdM in this regard, but the Punch I've had both of were completely different animals. The NC Punch DC isn't even a CC DC size (it's smaller). I still enjoy it though, and while I'd never order a box, it is the cigar I order in place of a cutting fee at spots like Club Macanudo. The NC is enjoyable, it just doesn't taste, feel or smoke anything like its CC brother.

I have had a few NC HDM Excaliburs. To be honest not a bad line at all.

In relation to Cuban HDM, they share absolutely no DNA. They are completely different.

Akin to a fresh baked white breadroll (NC) and a crafted Brioche bun (Cuban).

I would elaborate a bit on this and say they are not a bad line at all for a NC. And yes, the flavors of the two are quite different. :lol3:

Very different. The maduro Excaliburs, however, are the only Honduran and the only General-Cigar-is-engaging-in-trademark-infringement cigar I enjoy. Not enough to buy them, mind you, but the earth and slight creaminess is pretty nice. I'd buy a couple every now and again for a couple bucks each, but last time I was in a local B&M, they had them for $12 each! Laughed out loud and walked right on by.

As others have said, they are nothing alike.

That said, they are cigars, you can smoke them, they don't taste all that bad just different and not as good, and are OK if you can't get your hands on the real thing....oh...but now you can...

Hope this helps...

The HDM Excalibur was my gateway drug into this hobby. I smoked them primarily because Total Wine stores sold them extremely cheap and the flavors didn't turn me away. As my palate changed I actually enjoyed them a bit more, but with my constant experimentation I'm afraid I haven't had one in a few years.

As different as you can imagine, but that's not to say the NC version isn't a nice smoke. But, to be sure, they are different and share no DNA. Only a label.....

I've never tried the NC HdM, but I have sampled the Cuban variety. My opinion on them pales into insignificance in comparison to stating the fact that the last time Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey cigars were offered on a 24:24 sale, they sold out in 10 minutes!

P.S. And I was too late!

Thanks everyone! Sorry I'm late to comment. Forgot to check mark I wanted to follow my own thread.

There's been a lot of buzz surrounding Cuban HDMs, so I'm interested in picking some up.

Any suggestions as to which CUban HDM I should start with?

The HDM Epicure no 2 was the first Cuban cigar that I had. I recommend that one. Lovely smoke!

Epi #2's are box worthy, to be sure.

Du Prince and De Luxe are the only ones I have tried. Both are fantastic. On my list is the Epi2 and Especial (have only heard good things about those two as well).

Still gets the job done i suppose :lmao:

Btw, the "NC" in HDM refers to Non Cuban or Nicaraguan?

NC stands for Non-Cuban. The NC Hoyo de Monterrey is Honduran.
