Scrubber Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Mr Shorten's plan if he wins the next election... http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/bill-shorten-to-confirm-labor-plan-to-increase-tobacco-taxes-20151123-gl5nuh.html If Labor some how gets back in to power all us Aussies are going to have to stock up to beat the (further) price increases.
MIKA27 Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Shorten will NEVER come into power. I'm not saying labour never will but I am positive Shorten never will. What a joke. 3
Duxnutz Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Same old playbook. Self inflicted reduction of revenue is what it'll cause. Idiots!
polarbear Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 would it be too much to ask that cigars and pipe tobacco fall under a different tax scheme that cigarettes do!? 1
dicko Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 would it be too much to ask that cigars and pipe tobacco fall under a different tax scheme that cigarettes do!? This! It would be so easy to do as well.
LordAnubis Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I wonder if alcohol will be put into the "sin tax" 1
polarbear Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I wonder if alcohol will be put into the "sin tax" I don't see why it wouldn't be, especially if this current taxation system continues Although, with Australia's culture of mass Alcohol consumption it would generate more push back from the populous if not done slowly
Ken Gargett Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I don't see why it wouldn't be, especially if this current taxation system continues Although, with Australia's culture of mass Alcohol consumption it would generate more push back from the populous if not done slowly we have a supposedly thriving wine and brewing industry - and we are already the highest taxed wine producer on the planet (as in, our wine is taxed more highly here than any other wine producer taxes its wine at home). so hopefully they would have the sense not to kill that. but who knows. we really don't have that much of a tobacco industry so not so hard to attack it. and as for splitting up cigars and cigarettes, not in your wildest. cigars such a small %, why would they even bother. but mostly, the image of cigar smokers, fairly or otherwise, is that portrayed by our former treasurer when he had a cigar post budget and was castigated for it. cigars are still associated with the uber-wealthy tosser merchant banker set, whether we like it or not. cigarettes are seen as much more blue collar. no government of any ilk is going to split up tobacco to favour the wealthy against the workers. ever. 2
Scrubber Posted November 24, 2015 Author Posted November 24, 2015 I wonder if alcohol will be put into the "sin tax" Well when asked he wouldn't give a direct answer and just said they were focusing on tobacco "for now". In politician language that means yes. However, if alcohol taxes go up I think they will differentiate between different types of alcoholic products (unlike tobacco) just like they did with 'alcopops'. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

LordAnubis Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 So... who want's to move here to Mali? No tax on tobacco, all we'll have to do is set up a reliable courier service so we can get some good stock, and we'd all live like kings here! Temperature never drops below 18 degrees C, yeah ok there's a hell of a wet season and the odd bout of malaria you have to deal with but nothing a good registered nurse can't fix. Ohh and there's the whole Isis thing, but lets not dwell... think about the cigars man!!... and the AU$1.20 packet of 25 cigarettes. 2

With malaria and ebola you're unlikely to die of a smoking related illness
Ken Gargett Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 a benevolent dictatorship i could handle but parliament? no way, ever. 1
Randolph Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Ridiculous Shortly will never get in. Not to sat Labour won't. I hope magic tea cups of Parliament Hill don't stop for another change anytime soon - the instability of the continual change in leader will have the country unravelling like a poor quality Henri Winterman Half Corona. Shorten should concerntrate on fighting the Ice eppedemic.

Shorten should concerntrate on fighting the Ice eppedemic. it shows how stupid pollies of today are - shorten had every chance against abbott, yet blind freddie could have told him he had bugger all against malcolm. so he is unrelenting against abbott to the extent he is replaced. thereby guaranteeing his own political demise. think back to menzies. he could have pretty much destroyed calwell any time (yes, a grave generalisation..) yet he was always respectful to him. as a result, he fought him in three elections and guess what, beat him every time. last thing menzies wanted was to get rid of old arthur. 2
Guest rob Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Shorten couldn't run a chock raffle, let alone this country's government. Incompetent to the extreme.

Obviously staying in a hotel is not the done thing at the moment. Has the place gone into lock down or is travelling about still easy?
Jeremy Festa Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 cigars are still associated with the uber-wealthy tosser merchant banker set, whether we like it or not. Haha Ken reminded me of this.... Warning:- Seriously offensive. Please do not watch if you do not like unsavoury language. 2
