come on down adelaide.

seems a local cabbie always puts up a bit of tinsel in his cab to celebrate christmas and get into the spirit.

the council told him that he could no longer do that as it may offend people (if you saw this bloke's mullet, well that could offend, but tinsel?). how braindead, monumentally stupid can people be. fortunately the state minister for transport stepped in and sorted it but this is some idiot bureaucrat that has their nose in the public trough. lord knows what other decisions they have made.

and the bloke turns out not to even be christian. he just likes christmas.

No tinsel at Christmas!?

My missus would rage quit this country if that was a wide spread thing

Sorry, but I agree with the council.... until December hits, then he can decorate his entire cab in tinsel and Christmas baubles if he felt like it!

Why would tinsel be offensive?

It can be messy,for starters.

well, the only bloke cleaning it up will be the driver. you don't have to sit in it.

great shame that adelaide's taxi drivers did not combine and agree never to pick up a council employee again.

When people wish me a "Merry Christmas!", I reply "Happy Channukah!"

However, when someone tells me I look like Santa, I say that makes me want to commune with Satan. I do admit there is a passing resemblance… to Santa that is, just don't remind me.

Are cabs in Australia not privately owned and operated? Seems if his employer is ok with the tinsel, that's their business. I'm not offended by the "PC" aspect of this, but I am offended by the government telling a private business they can't do this.

forgive me but my knowledge of all matters religious are somewhat lacking, but as i understand it, channukah/hannukah (same thing?) is a jewish holiday around the same time as christmas (i have no idea what it celebrates but i once listened to a mate give an impassioned speech to a large crowd on the glories of christmas and the reason for it - namely that christ had died on the cross at this time - even i knew that was not right).

i gather the timing is not as 'set' as christmas, in that it moves about a bit?

we see in films how people now use 'happy holidays' (perhaps more than just films but it is not that prevalent here, as far as i am aware) to cover both (or possibly more). i gather hannukah is usually a bit earlier than christmas. it is usual to cease wishing happy christmas from december 26. does the same apply with hannukah or is it a little more fudged?

I'd like to buy all these council members cigars as apparently they have done so well for their city that such a serious matter as tinsel in a cab warrants their time and consideration. If only my daily problems were so small that I could be offended by tinsel.

you can bet your life they have banned cigars on any council property!

It's nonsense like this that's ruining society, people are far too ready to take offence. They need to go outside and have a quiet word with themselves

I feel the same way.

Here in Melbourne, Bourke Street "USED" to feel like Christmas every year. Growing up, Tinsel everywhere, Christmas felt like Christmas. These days, you wouldn't know it, even the Myer windows suck.

IMO, if one doesn't like and or believe in Christmas, then don't head out where others mostly do enjoy the festive season and in this case, a cab. That is just plain stupid indeed. I don't believe in pressing ones beliefs and faiths on another so don't make a big deal about it here.

I know a S**T load of non Christians who LOVE Christmas.

There are two types who celebrate Christmas, those Catholics and Orthodox who believe in it and celebrate through faith and those who do not believe or celebrate the faith side, but just get into the festive holiday season. If you don't fall into either, then zip it and go hide somewhere while we enjoy our time.

On a serious note, who the hell is offended by it????

I'm not religious, far from it in fact. I couldn't give a damn what religious festival people celebrate, as long as it doesn't involve sacrificing puppies or kittens to appease your demon lord.

As people have migrated to Australia and brought their own faith, we now celebrate their religious festivals. However, Australia is a predominantly Catholic/Christian country, we have celebrated Christmas since this country was settled. If you don't like it or are easily offended, there are plenty of countries you can migrate to that don't celebrate Christmas.

Heck, in Malaysia they celebrate Christmas. Sure, it is the commercial side of Christmas they celebrate, but nonetheless it is allowed.
