Scrubber Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I was given a custom roll with one of my recent purchases. I smoked it tonight and it was fantastic. If it was a blind tasting I would have guessed it was a PLPC. Great caramel flavour coming through. Interested to hear from anyone who has purchased customs cigars and which ones they enjoy. My guess is that customs don't necessarily sell that well so they tend to be aged pretty well by the time they are sold as the one I had was not harsh at all and didn't get hot at all even down to the nub. This is all based off one cigar so I may be completely wrong! Do you enjoy custom rolls from vendors? Or do you prefer to knowing the marca or at least knowing who rolled the cigar? I know a lot of people seem to love Hamlet customs. I've never tried these but would love to one day. Don't want to break any rules so PM me if you have any suggestions on some good customs which you would recommend purchasing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Colt45 Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 My guess is that customs don't necessarily sell that well so they tend to be aged pretty well by the time they are sold I would think just the opposite - customs are typically "rolled to order"....
Souperchi Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Don't want to break any rules so PM me if you have any suggestions on some good customs which you would recommend purchasing. I'd very much appreciate this as well. Drop me a PM fellas. cheers
Dbone Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Yes, there are specifically blended customs, but most custom cigars I have are a pretty big mixed bag... whatever is available that day is what gets used to make the custom cigar. Because you get a batch of coronas this month does not mean they'll be the same next, etc...

Lots of hype around custom rolls but for the most part, it's the luck of the draw of what tobacco the roller happens to have available that day. It's a bit different if you have the chance to travel to Cuba and have something rolled to your specification. I gotta laugh at the people paying upwards of $20/stick for custom rolls in the secondary market with no proof of history or provenance. 1
PointFivePast Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 That's a good looking cigar you have there, glad you enjoyed it! Haven't tried much in the way of custom rolls myself. Being so new, I tend to gravitate towards the established brands until I fill out my collection. Maybe once I have a good stash of cigars I might branch out to custom rolls for variety. Right now, I've probably tried less than 5% of the available smokes from the Cuban brands so working on bringing that up first. Would love to try a custom from Hamlet, La China, etc. but not much chance of seeing a rolling event near me... would have to catch one on vacation in Canada or the UK maybe. Just have to figure out how to keep the gf from figuring out that we've based an entire vacation around a rolling event.
JamesNYC Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I had a huge custom rolled cigar that I got last year from a friend at LCDH in Montreal when they had a roller in from Cuba I believe around the summer of 2014. I was told to smoke it then or let it rest, and I let it rest for a year and I must say I really enjoyed it. I didn't have a chance to talk to the roller or find out what was in it, but it was nice. I think it is probably a lot easier to just find a cigar that you like and buy several boxes. In NYC there are several places where they custom roll, and I've had a few, but they didn't have the tastes of Cuba that I prefer.
laficion Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Dear Scrubber, I don't know about you but If I were you I'd try out some very good Customs from Miguel ,the farm roller at Victor Luis Prieto's farm.He only rolls Robusto Extras. They are all made from Tobacco grown at thier farm and they are really Stunning.I smoked one last night and really enjoyed It. Guy
RijkdeGooier Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 As indicated, CR quality depend heavily on the prime material available. Consistency is not at all certain. Having said this a good CR from a good roller can be very memorable indeed.

wabashcr Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 I've had customs that are still in my top 10 cigars ever smoked, and I've had way more customs that I didn't finish. As stated above...there are no guarantees from one month to the next, given the limitation of "what's available" in tobacco. As odd as it may sound, I've found more consistency in regular production. That's a big part of the appeal for me. I imagine tobacco for regular production cigars has to be much more consistent. So you could have smaller batches of higher quality tobacco that can't be used for production because there isn't enough. I'm sure some of the well-placed and connected custom rollers get their hands on that from time to time. And obviously the other side is I'm sure they get a lot of sub-par leaf, too. But it's always exciting to think you could be getting something special. I second the suggestion of Miguel's rolls from Hector Luis Prieto's farm. I'm too new to have ever had a Hamlet, but I've tried quite a few of the other popular custom rollers. Miguel's have been exceptional every time.
rbelcastro Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 While in Cozumel I had a Custom Rolled at Havana Bob's. The best cigar I have ever smoked. If I wasn't a sniveling little coward, I would have tried to bring back a bunch!
earthson Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Have had numerous customs and have a few handfuls on the way currently. My favorite quality of most is the "barnyard" element that they exhibit, especially when fresh. Monsdales are still my all-time fave; gave one to somebody recently and he went over the moon about it (veteran smoker, too). He said it was like "licking the tobacco aging room floor." More, please! I would agree that the prices on the secondary market get pretty ridiculous sometimes.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk To the OP's point I believe he's talking about vendor-specific custom cigars. Not necessarily those from the better-known Island torcedors but rather blends a vendor commissions and sells as part of their offerings. To that I agree you will probably find that these have more age as they don't necessarily move quickly. From the few I've sampled across a handful of different vendors they can be hit or miss and one can't know specifically what one may be getting, puros or not....

Correct, I was referring to vendor-specific cigars. I may have been lucky getting a good one. Most seem to sell by the box so I don't know if I'd be willing to splash out for a box of something which, like you said, it is uncertain as to what it you are exactly getting Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Lotusguy Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Vendor is the caveat emptor on custom cigars - anything goes Agreed. Mostly misses in my book. In most cases I am strongly thinking they are not pure CCs
Smallclub Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Agreed. Mostly misses in my book. In most cases I am strongly thinking they are not pure CCs Agreed. Specially when they're not even advertised as cuban puros... 1
