It is Friday morning and I am sitting in my daughter's garden, reflecting on them past five days.

On Monday, my wife and I were preparing to head for Heathrow to fly home to the states. Agnes rubbed her chest and told me she had bad heartburn. I gave her some anti acids to chew. We went downstairs and she said that we should take a taxi rather than train and, tube. Then she became confused.

At that point we took the taxi to the hospital where they determined she'd had a mild heart attack.

On Wednesday they did an angioplasty and installed two stents.

Thursday (yesterday) they discharged her.

Today she is sleeping in while I enjoy a lovely cigar in the garden.

The NHS was fantastic, taking great care of this American woman. We are delighted that it happened before heading out over the Atlantic (then I'd be tapping this out in Iceland or worse).

Most of all, we are delighted that Aisling and I decided that things weren't quite right last Monday morning and diverted to the hospital. Heart attacks don't always manifest themselves in the traditional chest clutching manner. If things don't seem right, check it out.

Cheers everybody!

Pete. so happy to hear it worked out so well. I don't know your wife but I know you. Please give her a big hug.

i had a lovely American lass visit Oz a few years ago. She was on a motorcycle tour, fractured her leg and was in a tizz. Fixed up, no charge (which she reconfirmed a zillion times) and headed back home.

We may complain from time to time, but here are some wonderful medical people around the world. Their heart is in the right place.

Peter, I hope she has a speedy road to recovery! Please give her my regards.

Great to hear you got such fast treatment.

I hope to see you soon. I understand of course if your trip to Ireland has to be cancelled.

All the best to the missus, Peter. I hope her motor is as good as new ASAP!

I'm glad to hear your wife is doing well. Symptoms are generally less typical in women, so if it sounds like it could be chest pain that isn't going away, do exactly what you did. Better safe than sorry.

Modern medicine is quite something isn't it? One of my colleagues/friends was playing rec hockey and a guy on the ice collapsed. Pulseless. They got him back with an automated external defibrillator and got him to hospital. My friend visited him at lunch time, he had stents in and was watching TV.

Best wishes for your wife's speedy recovery! That was a smart move on your part, the heartburn symptom should never be ignored. I knew someone who had what he thought was indigestion/heartburn for several months before finally going to a doctor. It turns out that in that time he had several minor heart attacks but the cumulative effect resulted in damage to the heart muscle. This significantly shortened his life.

Glad our fantastic NHS came to her aid! Its a great institution under threat by a complete **** named Jeremy Hunt (ironic isnt it!). My brother is a consultant and everyone I know in the NHS hates the slimy little *unt

If you are on twitter, please tweet this story and include @butNHS and the c-hunt himself @Jeremy_Hunt

Agree with many of the policies of the Tories except their attitude to the NHS which is at odds with the country generally who receive excellent service from all those who work for the NHS with no charge at point of delivery or the need for an expensive insurance policy.

What turned out to be a scare became an uplifting story. All the best to your wife

While men have the more typical "crushing" type chest pain with pain radiating to their arms/jaw, shortness of breath, etc, women are more atypical with pain less severe, as you mentioned feeling more like heartburn, and even presents with flu-like symptoms.

Much better follow up than one of my patient'st that just felt like he'd strained a muscle at work and was just pounding his chest with his fist. When told he would go to the cath lab the next morning, he wanted to go back to work until then. smh
