El Presidente Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 I could never get my head around the Partagas Presidente. One dimensional, flavour "light", dry in the mouth for some reason. Given that I force myself to try cigars I don't like (Hell, it's part of my job), I do try the Presidente from different batches...albeit I do the bare minimum required (3-4 a year). From the recent offerings, I tried one again this month. Then I tried another. To my surprise I enjoyed them. Slight savoury spice, deep toasted tobacco flavour and a ton of dense heavy smoke. On each occasion both were accompanied with a dash of Zacapa 23. Worked a treat. There were no construction issues (which I have found frustrating in the past) and the denseness of the smoke was far more than I have experienced before. By no means a complex cigar but more than satisfying. I look forward to the next and fingers crossed it provides the same utility. For those who have tried 2014 incarnations, how have they compared to previous years in your opinion? would love to know your thoughts. So back to the question at hand, The last cigar that made you rethink your previous held opinion?
Lant63 Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 2011 Erdm demi tasse made me rethink the entire marca. Sent by telepathic super powers -Stogie Boy 1
earthson Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Had a Partagas Serie D #4 yesterday that blew my doors out - I didn't know Partagas could be so good? I've typically found Partargas "typically Cuban" in the past... nothing bad - pretty good - but lacking the type of character I usually like in my smokes. This one, however, was a game-changer. In other news, I DID have a Presidente a few months ago that piqued my interest. I might have to dive into some soon...
tmac77 Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 RA Extra ... thought it would be better by now after not trying one for about a year.....After hearing some nice reviews on sticks that have a bit more age on them...... wrong!! still a miss.. So odd as I do not dislike a single other RA in their line up. not exactly a rethink but certainly has me befuddled.
Blace Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I've often wondered how preconceptions about previous smoking experiences or of marcas affect ones smoking experience. Especially when you take a look at the blind tasting results. For example I can remember people rather enjoying the Monte Open but they would never purchase a box... Anyway, I'm still very much exploring the Habanos portfolio and try not to hold too much prejudice... To answer your question, I'd say the PL Montecarlos shook things up a bit for me as I considered it a cheap and cheerful, but despite the cheap price it has plenty of character to keep me coming back.
Dimmers Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Oh yeah recent example - the Partagas Serie D Especial LE 2010. I was gifted a box on release, and sampled a few over the years. Not overly impressed, just didn't offer much period. A fortnight ago, I decided to give the box another crack (first in 2 years). Wow soooo smooth yet lots of flavour. Beautiful long finish, copious smoke, and earthy/ leathery / cedary goodness. Some nice spice notes. Going to try again this weekend to see if this was a fluke or not. Any other lover for the Partagas Serie D Especial LE 2010 ??
Overproof Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 SLR Regios. My first few were overwhelming with a strong bitter aftertaste of nuts and lingering spice. I then tried one a couple of years on and it was much more enjoyable..Didn't wow me but certainly changed my opinion. Less spice and still a smoked nut flavor but less intense, almost had a fruit edge at points.
JasnRach Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 For me recently it was the RASCC. I purchased a box and had two, not to my liking at all and regretted the purchase. They were relegated to the back of the humidor and were to be given out to mooching mates! Well a week ago, 1.5 years later, I was after a quick smoke and being the smallest vitola I own I grabbed one. Well it was a beautiful stick and i enjoyed it immensely. I have had another 3 since!! I know the opinion of RASCC on here and until a week ago mine was the total opposite, I do have the palate of a goat...... well my previous held opinion has now changed!! 1
Bartolomeo Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Monte DE....hated them on release but last couple has me seeing what the fuss is all about
CaptainQuintero Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Cuaba Distinguidos Just a super rich, creamy Cuban dream.
Smallclub Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Partagas Presidente. For those who have tried 2014 incarnations, how have they compared to previous years in your opinion? would love to know your thoughts. Rob, some friends and I have split a box purchased from you. I've smoked one so far and to me it was the "usual" Presidente. The dryness came only at the end, along with an austere earthiness. Note that I usually smoke them like a panatela: I make a minimal cut and I slow the pace. And I agree with you, the pairing with a rum is a treat. As for your 2nd question: I wasn't a fan of the Epicure No2 until I tried those from 2013. It's now one of my favorite robusto.
Stogieninja Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 SLR Regios. First one was bland and blah. After a few months, I tried another and it was bliss.
CdnLimitada Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Punch punch. Had some tubos from 2010 that I really didn't like but the ones I have now (non-tubos and maybe that is the difference) are very good. I had another PSD4 last night from a friend and was terrible (2012). I can't seem to get lucky with them. I had one spectacular one in 2011 that basically led me on this hobby but since then it has been a disaster.
headstand Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Party Shorts. First taste was from a couple of samplers, they were a rich, brooding treat. Followed up by a box purchase that disappointed, being acrid and harsh. Two years on I revisited, in the last month, from a second box purchase - glad I did. Not as rich as the samplers, but complex and tasty. Bring on the Party!
Yagermeister Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Partagas is one of the few marcas that has never really resonated with me. I enjoy the occasional 898, and I've been meaning to get my hands on some Shorts, but otherwise I find them rather "meh". However, I bought a box of the '14 Presidentes that Prez is referencing because I thought "Hey, there's a cigar I haven't seen before. Let me buy a whole box so I can try them." Just had my first one last night and man, it was fantastic. Not overly complex, but just a really satisfying blend of toasted tobacco, black pepper, and spices. Construction was spot on, too. Didn't go out on me once and each puff gave me a mouthful of nice, thick smoke. 1
nick2021 Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Had a RASS recently gifted to me. Outstanding smoke, made me rethink my previous experience with that cigar.
danny Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Mine would have to be the CoRo. I was never really impressed by them (young) to be honest but decided to try it again and bought a box. But when I smoked one, which was a MUO MAY 14 box I got by chance, I was literally blown away. It was absolutely amazing. Luckily this was before people started raving about them and was able to get another box.
beamer Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 RASS for me, if I'm allowed to pick a cigar that constantly makes me rethink my opinion of it. I go from loving them to hating them. Great ones are amazing. Duds are... well... duds. I don't find much middle ground with them. I suspect this means I just need to bite the bullet on a PSP/HQ box the next time they come up.
