stunod Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Ken, I've heard you talk about how rollers should somehow sign or mark the boxes they roll so we can look for the good rollers or stay away from crap ones. Liga Privada does just that. These sticks look great and now I know who rolled them.
Puros Y Vino Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Interesting. But it goes to show you. NC makers definitely do something to their wrappers to give them a consistent look. A box of Cubans will never come from one roller due to the fact that rollers will end up making cigars will different shades or wrapper during the day/week/month, etc. When they're sorted for packaging you'll see a box with similar looking cigars that came from many rollers.

Remember that little experiment that we did with the prez at your place a few years back Frank. We took a damp napkin and were able to wipe some of the colour off an NC.. 1
Smallclub Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Dupont ST did that with one their line of cigars in Dom Rep. more than 10 years ago.
Guest rob Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 In the same way that HSA has box codes, I don't think there will ever be roller ID stated. They want the consumer to believe that each box is as good as the next (or that perception at least)- and trying to avoid some boxes being more desirable than another, and creating a market within the market.
PapaDisco Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Heck, I'd settle for simply having one factory per marca. And if you went the next step to associating that marca with leaf from a specific estate then I'd be a very happy camper! As it is now with any vitola of any marca being made from any leaf and rolled in any factory . . . well it seriously dilutes the brand value of all of the marcas.
Orion21 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Some NC companies 100% put a slurry of some kind on their wrappers to enhance fermentation and flavor. I saw a video on this a few years ago and it explained a lot. Most likely what you wiped off was the residue from this process. Cheers boys!
Smallclub Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 As it is now with any vitola of any marca being made from any leaf and rolled in any factory . . . Any leaf? Who said that? Your local cigar shop owner? As for a marca associated with leaves from a specific estate, it's the case of the Hoyo de San Juan. Rolled with leaves from 2 fincas in the San Juan y Martinez area.

Back in my early days of smoking, I tried a Rocky Patel (don't remember which one, he has done so many over the years). Lit it up, took a few puffs. As I was sitting there, my wife looks at me and asks "what's all over your lips?". I was dumbfounded as I looked down at the cigar and noticed my fingers were all stained. I put it down, went inside, looked in the mirror...looked like I had "stain" lipstick on. Tossed that POS and never smoked another RP... 1
JohnS Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Never mind the rollers....where is Ken lately, he's been a bit quiet. I miss his humorous insights! As for the subject at hand...can you tell who the roller is from outside the box? It seems that box has the roller's name on the inside.
Guest rob Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 As for the subject at hand...can you tell who the roller is from outside the box? It seems that box has the roller's name on the inside. The person who boxes the cigars has no idea who rolled the cigars. In fact, it's entirely likely that the cigars that go into the box were rolled by up to dozens of different people. The rolling floor of RyJ has dozens of people there rolling. Obviously smaller factories have less rollers, so the likelyhood of a smaller number of different rollers 'creating' a box becomes more so.
Habanos2000 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Is there any way to ensure the cigars in that box were really rolled by the same person?

Liga Privada does just that. These sticks look great and now I know who rolled them. it is a great idea. i don't expect it for the large volume smokes but for the pointy end stuff, i still believe that they can do it. yes i understand the boxing/sorting, but that can easily be modified if they wanted to. 1
MIKA27 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I have no idea if it's true or untrue but I've smoked a number of NC's and never had any residual stains or marks left behind. The last NC I enjoyed was a Camacho Triple maduro and whilst that wrapper is black as spades I didn't have any stains on my hands or lips.
Habana Mike Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 And here I thought this was going to have something to do with those Bay City boys.....
Orion21 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 What the hell is that? The slurry they apply to wrapper leaves for color and taste. Disgusting.
IPORTER Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Holy smokes, that is a nasty set up....looks like a huge pile of elephant dung....
