which cigars would you classify to smoke better with dark or light wrappers?

I wouldn't say smoke better, but to exhibit a flavor profile that is typical of a vitola or marca.

I bought a box of 2012 siglo 4s last month with pretty dark wrappers. They smelled exactly like dark chocolate. I tried my first one yesterday and it did not smoke like the siglo 4s I am familiar with. No honey. Not creamy. Very spicy. Although it was pleasant, not what I was looking for.

I hope the rest smoke better.

But what do you think smoke better with dark/light wrappers?

Darker

Monte

Upmann

SLR

R Allones

RyJ

SCdLH

Boli

Diplomatico

Lighter

Hoyo

Cohiba

El Rey

Quay

none of these are to my taste with the light yellow/straw colored wrappers

Upmann: dark and reddish (colorado maduro, I believe)

Boli and Monte: the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice

R Gonzalez: light colorado

Por Larr: the more rustic wrappers seem to taste the best - go figure.

When you think you have a preference the Marca throws a star at you in the opposite shade. I wouldn't lock one down.

Exactly; that's why I attach more importance to the thickness, texture, smoothness, presence of oils, etc.

Since there are around 67 shades of wrapper, they are like a box of chocolates. you never know what you're gonna get! I like chestnut brown wrappers. Not dark, not light.

Are the wrapper hues simply aesthetic variance within a homogenous manufacturing process, or are they actually using different seed varietals? Coming from smoking (premium) NCs, where consistency of color, flavor and quality are the norm--actually, it goes beyond that. Most marques advertise and sell separate wrappers (natural/maduro) in the same vitola--I find it to be a strange concept not knowing what you've bought until the box seal is cut.

Your best guess is as good as ours. Unlike NC manufacturers, little to nothing is known about seed varietals to anyone outside of the HSA/Cubatabaco octopus.

Wrappers?! I like wrappers!!

I do love, and try over and over to tell the difference in cigars that one can control, so given that;

Same blend, same roll DAY, same torcedor.

Darker leaf does impart a richer more molasses vs cane sugar sweetness, as well as a deeper finish vs the more nutty or subtle finish.

Now, that's just my two bits on fresh leaf from the isle

I prefer lighter wrappers for the most part. Of course I don't expect a Boli to have a light wrapper. lol3.gif

However, thickness, sheen, etc., are factors regardless.

Nice wrappin' wit ya. lol3.gif
