Hunter1974 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Ok I am 40 years old been smoking cigars for only 5 years and to be honest I see you guys post all these posts about cigars and comments like best aged after 3 years etc . I must admit until tonight I thought people who made those comments were full of it or rich snobs . When I first started my cigar journey 5 years ago I bought several hundred dog rockets and then started buying top level NCs until I found you guys! For nostalgia purposes I revisited those dog Rockets tonight and all are aged 4 + years and OMG! What improvements they have !!!! The way these cigars tasted in the beginning I wanted to pitch them. Glad I didn't! If these low end cigars did this I couldn't imagine a top Cuban with age !!!! Granted these cigars with age don't hold a candle to a Cuban ROTT SO my Question is what's your opinion on Cubans that require the least amount of age cause I want that Cuban flavor and I want it now damn it ! Lol 1

joeypots Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 This Cuban thing of ours was often referred to as the dark side in years gone by. Get a good size cooler and some beads and start buying more cigars than you will smoke. In a few years you'll begin to form your own opinions. Also remember that a lot of the criticism of Cuban Cigars has to do with storage conditions. If the cigars are too wet, and they are often shipped very wet, they will be harsh at best. So make sure they acclimate for thirty days before you smoke one. Properly stored and aged Cuban cigars are fantastic but this is an expensive hobby. And be careful buying aged stock unless you know what you are doing. There is a lot of dreck out there. You're in the deep water now. 2
tjohn7 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I would advise you that a bad cigar will not become a good cigar with age. It may mellow out the flavors, but it won't likely impress. That is why it's very important to find trusted vendors and go with them. Once you've eliminated fakes and low quality CCs from your selection, you can really start to be picky. Remember no one can tell you what you'll like, you have to figure that out, but typical sticks that I've had great success with have been: HdM Epi 2 (actually almost any HdM, maybe not DC, though age definitely doesn't hurt) Upmann Connie A BRC Sir Winnie (though why waste such an amazing cigar by smoking it ROTT) HURR Magnum 46 Magnum 50 (though, in my experience, not as approachable as the 46) VR Unicos QdO Imperiales (again, why waste these by smoking them young) You'll find many more yourself. I try to avoid smoking full bodied tobacco young (Ramon Allones, Boli, some Cohiba and Monte) as time does wonders to this tobacco. Again, buy a bunch of sticks or split some boxes with buddies and you'll be able to develop your own sense of what you like and don't like. Good luck. Tom 1

santela Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 The Prez has been commenting on all the cigars on sale through 24:24, and he will usually tell you if you need to lay them down or not. I find most small cigars don't need too much time, ie. Party Shorts, RASCC, Bolivar PC, M4, M5, etc. 1
sanity Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Buy aged boxes When I started, I did not have access to aged stock so had nothing to compare. Reached out to a couple of people and was able to acquire some fivers with age. The smoking experience was so good I purchased a wineador to start aging some stock. I bought a couple of aged boxes to smoke. Follow the 24:24 thread to have an idea of what to age and what is smoking well now. Buying aged boxes helped balance my stock. 1
Tino Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 ELs and REs can be a good option if you pick the ones that haven't sold so well, particularly when they had multiple releases a year and larger production runs. I bought a box of Bolivar Short Bolivar RE Asia 08 from Rob last year that I ploughed through. Not everyone's taste but the Upmann Mag 48 is another example.
Sophistic Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 bolivar, monte, partagas...all great after just 10-12 months
XYRNTX Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Love it bro, glad you were able to enjoy a NC that was aged....I'm like you in the sense that I read comments and go wow, best aged 3-4 years, I need two or three boxes (one to enjoy now) and age a few if...I...can...only...not...touch them...lol 2
CaptainQuintero Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 PL robusto 07 Asia RE are a great after cigar that are still around. In fact most Asia REs are still available and have plenty of years on them. Great place to experiment. 2

DropTopDee Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 start buying more cigars than you will smoke. this has been my plan so far.
joeypots Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Young Hoyo Epi #1s were my go to stick when I got into Cuban cigars. Good young and they didn't overwhelm a novice. The Hoyo DC was as well. I haven't had either for some time so I don't know how they are smoking now. I've smoked a few Monte 520s recently and am impressed with this too fat cigar. Body, flavor and strength are all on. They are not an every day smoke though, lol.
JohnS Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Aging cigars...I believe it because so many of you have discussed the benefits of it for certain cigars. Other cigars don't benefit from aging. I'm only at the beginning of my journey into cigars myself in comparison to guys here who post how much they are enjoying a brand of cigar from 2007, as an example. By the way, where's Ray? (I always enjoy his input on this topic)
CaptainQuintero Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I have to track some down. Love plpcs and did know a robusto size was floating around out there There's a belicosos extra (piramdes) from 2008 I think which is still knocking around that's PL too.
Skyfall Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Several pieces of advice: 1) Buy aged stock 2) Fresh HDM Epi 2's, R&J Cazzies, ERDM CS's, Monte 5's, Party Shorts, Boli RC's, QDO Corona's, (several other's) are of course more balanced and better with a little age, but these are my favorites, that I think smoke very enjoyable fresh. 3) Buy 2 boxes of what you like if you can afford it, Smoke one box fresh, no harm in that, lay the other box to rest, build a rotation, and eventually, you will only be smoking aged cigars over time. That being said, the only time I have a fresh cigar these days is if it is given to me. I have built a rotation over the years and anything I pull out these days are usually from 2010 and earlier, unless it's a special cigar or special circumstances. The cigars I listed are the ones I recall being very enjoyable fresh. Like others have said, age is going to mellow flavors, build more complexity, all of the oils combining together, slowly coming together in a complex yet simple harmony. But a bad cigar will never be a great cigar after aging. 2
CUBANO Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 All good advice. start buying more boxes and soon you'll have a bunch of aged cigars
