CaptainQuintero Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Miami psychosis indeed! Leaving this here, clearly the wheel is spinning but the hamster is dead
DrunkenMonkey Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 3. After reading many of your posts I clearly deduce that you are a Cuban Government apologist, and America hater - no insult intended just an opinion. A Cuban government apologist and America hater? And you think that was arrived at by deduction? Could you outline for us the things that he said from which you "clearly deduced" these two conclusions?
MPS Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Miami psychosis indeed! Leaving this here, clearly the wheel is spinning but the hamster is dead Again this is clearly your only retort. Miami this and Miami that.

Could you outline for us the things that he said from which you "clearly deduced" these two conclusions? You might as well quit asking questions. They won't get answered. Somehow we're supposed to learn all this amazing knowledge they have another way. 1
ewipper Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 You might as well quit asking questions. They won't get answered. Somehow we're supposed to learn all this amazing knowledge they have another way. You chose to heckle instead of discuss. Conclude instead of explore. Defend your own choices instead of hearing the positions and experience of others and RESPECTFULLY disagreeing and providing your side. For that, you get no answers. You want to learn, learn the way we all did. I have strong opinions because I spent 18 years forming them, smoking, alone and with others who enjoy a deep understanding of this hobby. No free lunches; that's as red, white, and blue as it gets.
DrunkenMonkey Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Oh hi Eddie! Hey, in the spirit of discussion, could you clarify what your point was when you said this: If you want another pointless experiment to illustrate this, smoke Connoiseur A side by side with a Sir Winston from 2013. You will NEVER EVER trust the name on a Sir Winston band again -- EVER (even if it is so good you want to take it to the desert island).
pbibby Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I don't think people are saying spill all of your knowledge, but I think the question at hand is what is the experiment (comparison between Upmann Connie A vs. Sir Winston) supposed to tell us? All experiments test hypotheses (from my VERY limited understanding of the scientific method). So I believe the question is what is that hypothesis?

All experiments test hypotheses (from my VERY limited understanding of the scientific method). So I believe the question is what is that hypothesis? No knowledge to spill. Simply drilling down on the question, "what is upmann?" My conclusion is that this experiment is a good way to start getting answers because Connoiseur A is a reliable control for the experiment.

My conclusion is that this experiment is a good way to start getting answers because Connoiseur A is a reliable control for the experiment. Okay. So you're saying the Connie A gives you a good bearing for the entire Upmann marca? I'm honestly asking as I want to make sure I understand.
ewipper Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Okay. So you're saying the Connie A gives you a good bearing for the entire Upmann marca? I'm honestly asking as I want to make sure I understand. Im saying Connie A and Sir Winston taste like night and day to me. Why? Which one is Upmann? Cant answer that question for anyone else, its just a place to start. But i personally felt lied to. Smoke both, see what you prefer. From different boxes to determine consistency. Then, ask, which one would you rather stock up on for 350/400 bucks a pop assuming you are stuck with what you buy?
Blakes Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Hasn't the Connie A only been out for a few months anyway? are any even a year old yet? If that's the case how can that be a good cigar to judge the marca? 1
Zigatoh Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 They really can't... And after all that the suggestion was try before you buy because two different upmanns taste different Same could be said of any marca, you may love party shorts and hate psd4s, bbf may rock your world while bcg leaves you cold. And think before buying a box of any cigar.
CaptainQuintero Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 The trouble with this is again it's centred around taste, everyone can imagine the general upmann profile but the mag 46 doesn't particularly fit that, to a point for me neither does the #2. But to someone else it might be the complete opposite. The same could be said of the Cazadorez in the RyJ marca, the post 95 blend change celestiales finos too. Partagas P2, seleccion privada #1 are vastly different, it could be said they don't fit the partagas marca flavour profiles too. Bolivar gold medals? Again it's all tastes and tobacco strains change, what is planted changes and they are all natural products that will taste differently due to thousands if different issues. Of course a bad sir Winnie could taste the same as a bad esplendidos, but the same could be said if any two cigars if the same vitola. Personally the sir Winston is on it's own in terms of flavour for me within the upmann vitola now that the #1 have been deleted. But they still taste upmann. Esplendidos still taste vastly different to me too. I've never gotten grass or herb/bean notes in SWs and I've never ever tasted leather in an esplendidos. But that's my tastes. Maybe your tastes have just changed.

mk05 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I invite everyone here to stop commenting for a second and read through the thread carefully. But this time through, give Eddie a benefit of the doubt as a person who may know certain things about the industry. If you open up and listen to what he is trying to say, I think you may learn something very interesting. Even if you disagree, the picture he paints may give you something to think about. It's no reason to go out there and call names. This coming from a Honda factory cigar smoker. 1 1

CaptainQuintero Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 LCDH releases cannot be said to be always true to marca profiles either. If your experiment was repeated with LGC Inmensos and LGC number 1-4 then you would have to believe that the Inmensos is not true to the LCG marca. Which I agree with. Maybe if a suspect box of SW was tasted compared to a Upmann PC, an Esplendidos and a CCE, a picture might emerge but again to my tastes, both those churchills, whilst different to each other, are considerably milder than anything else in their respective marca. I would guess that detecting mildness is something which is easy to lose with any number of variables. The Connie A is a very rich and easy to distinguish smoke, that doesn't mean that sir winstons should be also.

Just to clarify, I know nothing about the industry but i do know about cigars and the business world. I also know that on the front page of the new york times saturday the fda curtailed imports on indian pharmaceuticals after finding there were no active ingredients. Why would you do that? To save 5 cents a pill on Cipro? Bc thats what corporations do. Who's monitoring the Honda factory for consistency?
Zigatoh Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 But you said understanding the industry takes decades. So was that just a hypothetical comment as opposed to personal one?

However, if you go back and read through the thread carefully, but this time though, pretending you don't know Eddie from a bar of soap - you'll see the other side of the thread. Claims and comments made. Seeds sowed. Gently watered. Questions asked. Clarification sought as to what is this fruit that I am eating, if it's not the apple I thought it was. Take the pebble from my hand..... But master, I see no pebble.... Come back to me when you do.....

Guest rob Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Now you know what I feel like trying Sir Winstons year after year. At least I'm not charging you money. I love discussion, and would sincerely appreciate your input if you have some to share that would benefit my understanding and appreciation for what is one of my dearest passions and interests. For the record, I don't have an opinion on the whole topic at hand just yet. I have no horse in this race and no axe to grind. I'm in the formative stages of trying to form a position, or aquire knowledge based on what is said by those discussing it. I'd like to think that whilst we're on a tobacco lovng forum, that if you had input, and knowledge that would be appreciated by your 'brothers'..... that you would enjoy the opportunity to share with discussion, stories... and not in cryptic ways and riddles that require someone with far greater intellect than me to decipher.
Troels Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 A bit hard to figure out just how ones post might fit into whats said, but the random singles of winnies i've had has been a great delight - and i've found similar qualities in upmann pc, though id prefer sir Winston - thats one recommendation for trying out a few singles if you havent already - one of the great cigars
mk05 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Marc, I trust your judgement, and respect those you vouch for..... However, if you go back and read through the thread carefully, but this time though, pretending you don't know Eddie from a bar of soap - you'll see the other side of the thread. Hey rob, nice to see you. I certainly understand that, just saying to keep an open mind, for those who are weighing in with a very heavy hand. This to me is a very astute analysis of a critical problem holding back Habanos. And the reason that cigar aficionado doesnt have more cuban cigars in the top 25 even though very few rate lower than 90 issue to issue. Personally, this was one of the most insightful, interesting, and revealing posts in this thread for me. I think that if true - and I connect what Eddie is saying (mostly between the lines) in his other posts - it says a lot about CA that I certainly did not expect, and Tabacuba.

Thank you. This pretty much sums up the way I feel, too. I have read this thread twice with an open mind and I am just as confused as ever. I think I am going to climb out of this rabbit hole now.
