danielmgibbs Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 we've had best... we've had worst... so what was your most surprising cigar or box of the year? i ask because I bought a box of D5's earlier in the year before I had discovered that literally everywhere i looked online, in every review I could find, it appeared that these cigars were being heavily derided as sub-par! Consequently as I waited for them to arrive I became anxious that I should have gone with my firm favourite D4 (although from what I can see Rob I may have been in the same situation this year if I'd ordered 25's as i normally do). Anyway when they arrived I gingerly removed the first from the box to try and was pleasantly surprised with what i could only describe a little stick of solid chocolaty goodness I've throughly enjoyed each and every one i've tried from the box since. anyone else been pleasantly (or actually disappointingly) surprised this year with a particular box or single?

Who knew lol. Firm fave now. THIS! At one year old my RASS were delicious. I bought 3 more boxes the day after smoking two sticks.
ramon_cojones Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 I'd have to agree with the d5 and again mention the pl montecarlos. Had zero expectation from the d5 given how everyone talks down on them and have not touched the box I got from a friend last year. Was gifted one in hawaii by a botl and it was amazingly good by any account. Also, when I cracked my plmc box after a year of rest on thanksgiving I was extremely pleased, still get some rough ones here and there but had another the other day that was just brilliant.

PapaDisco Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 A box of Ramon Allones corona gordas I found in Hong Kong. Not entirely sure of the stick's marketing name because I couldn't understand the clerk's accent, but it's a corona gorda. Tried one on a whim and it was so good I bought the box.

Well, let's just say that I've tried everything from dryboxing to airing out to plastic bagging etc. These things are such garbage (taste like cardboard) that I question their authenticity . Now that I'm part of the FOH community, I know where I'll be buying my sticks

No wonder I couldn't understand "Ramon Allones Los Casas de Habanos Superiores" in thick, Cantonese accented english! Anyway, those Allones Superiores were truly superior, and if any of you guys are ever in Hong Kong, stop by the "Red Divan" on Pedder Street in Central. They are expensive as all hell (certainly no place to mail order from), but it's classy and the staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. When I'm in town on business, it's always an enjoyable stop. Half the time there are other interesting people to talk to, and I like to support the joint with some business.

The biggest part of the suprise was how well the cigars smoked young. Ie. RASS I smoked in past needed years of box age for the flavors to open up.

Trevor is the proprietor of ccw and it's pretty common knowledge to those of us with experience that there are only a couple cgs in RAs lineup. The superiores are ok and not hard to find, not expensive either in other parts of the world.
LordAnubis Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Earlier in the year I sent El Pres a message and said "send me a box of PC sized cigars... surprise me" He sent me a box of Rafael Gonzales Petit Coronas. Was blown away by them. Great cigars! I'd never tried them before so it was a surprise there, people were talking about the Perlas which i have tried a few singles of and they were nice, but never thought much of getting a box. Pres really went all out with this recommendation! Will definitely buy more.
