El Presidente Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 A fair few of you now should have had the opportunity to try the Cohiba Piramide Extra. We had a tasting of these on the weekend alongside a box of my original Behike 56. To a person we preferred the Piramide Extra. For those that have smoked a few, what are your thoughts on this cigar in terms of flavor and construction?
poorman Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I've only smoked a couple, so far I prefer the BHK line as well as the 1966. Construction was spot on. The flavor left me unimpressed. The ones I had just didn't have the nuances of the Behike's or 66. Maybe that'll change after a few more.
Lotusguy Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Based on two samples from different boxes, I really liked it. Ranks above BHK56 and the 1966 for me. Excellent construction and flavors, especially considering how young they were. Unfortunately, the value for money just isn't there for me, so I am not a buyer - at least not while I can get wonderful aged or other regular production for less than half the money 1
CanuckSARTech Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Had a handful now, the first one being in Cuba as my first cigar during last November's trip, and I've got a couple boxes now, including some delicious original release ones. To me, they currently are in my top 5 cigars smoked of modern/recent production (not in any particular order, but these, cab RASS, RA Extras, Trini Robusto T's, and QdO [superiores RE AND Imperiales]). And these Cohiba Piramides are incredibly young. I am VERY interested to see how these will age and perform at the 3 year and then 5 year mark. Either way, I do agree that these are tastier than the BHK's, and better money value then on top of it.
Puros Y Vino Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I think these will be looked upon with the same reverence of the OR Siglo VI and BHK line. I've found them to be very good cigars. The construction is impeccable. The flavours are a bit on the medium bodied side but in a good way. This is a very smooth cigar IMO and probably a better buy than some of the BHK's.
Rye Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Man, I must've got a couple of real lemons. Both that I've smoked we're VERY young, and even harsh at times, and one canoed so badly it was pitched before the half. I have 1 left, and if it doesn't wow me, I will be done with them. I'd rather an Esplendido ATM
maverickdrinker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Decent cigar however, I would rather spend the money on Cohiba Siglo VIs.
jrb5783 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Decent cigar however, I would rather spend the money on Cohiba Siglo VIs. X2
nikesupremedunk Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I only had 1, which I believe was an OR. Probably was one of the best Cohiba I've had, better than BHK and 1966. Prices on them are better now, but only picked up 3 because I didn't want to spend the $ for a box back when they came out.
Isotonic Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Based on two samples from different boxes, I really liked it. Ranks above BHK56 and the 1966 for me. Excellent construction and flavors, especially considering how young they were. Unfortunately, the value for money just isn't there for me, so I am not a buyer - at least not while I can get wonderful aged or other regular production for less than half the money I was looking at picking up a box of these but being a Newbie into the cigar world I am of course nervous and hesitant. You mentioned other regular production/aged cigars that given a comparison of value would win your choice. What are these cigars that you are referring to?
BMWFan Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I have really loaded up on these, about 8 boxes. They aren't as good as 1966, but better than BHK IMHO. They are also an impressive stick to gift a friend. They are bad@ss!!!
Guest rob Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I'm with Art, in that I wouldn't choose the Piramides over a Sig 6
ramon_cojones Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I don't understand, does the cpe incorporate some kind of "special" tobacco like the bhk or is it standard fair? If so why not choose a coro, esplendido or sig vi over it? I think the majority purchasing these cigars are mostly people who are unfamiliar with the roots of the cohiba line and are therefore the ones touting their pedigree no? Any clarity on this Rob? I'd like to hear to from people who regularly smoke the entire range.
polarbear Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I was able to get my hands on 3 OR Piramdes and hae smoked 2 of them One was one of the worst Cuban cigars i've ever had, bugger all draw, bad burn, flaky wrapper and little to no flavor The second i had about 6 months later. It was everything I knew a Cohiba could be. My person Jury is still out on whether i'm prepared to take the plunge on a box when I've never had a bad Siglo VI or Lancero but i'm coming around to the idea
Surucipe Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Only had 1 so far but liked it so much that I bought 2 boxes based on that. Relatively smooth cigar with absolutely perfect construction. Two thumbs up!
braveheart655 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Only had 1 so far but liked it so much that I bought 2 boxes based on that. Relatively smooth cigar with absolutely perfect construction. Two thumbs up! That was my experience as well. After I've got my boxes I've tried couple of more. They were not as good as my frist one but still pretty good construction and flavor. Still needs couple of years of rest for the last third to come around. ps. It's funny how our purchase behavior and experiences (BHK52, Piramides Extra) are pretty much the same
alloy Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I've smoked a box and I like them better than the 56's. Medium bodied with a lot of flavors. Very smooth all the way to the nub.
sengjc Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Right up there with the current Cohiba big guns: BHK and 1966 and like the others: smooth and luxurious, refined. However, a little pricey for a Linea Classica. That said, from the one I had shortly its release, I can say it is sweeter and creamier than the usual Linea Classica but not as strong...yet. Lots of nutmeg.
BRAC Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I've only had a single out of the box I picked up recently. That single sample was fantastic! Excellent construction, medium bodied and incredibly smooth down to the nub. Actually, it was one of the smoothest Cuban's that I've had period, and with less than a year of rest that is quite something. I haven't tried the BHK54/56 yet, but I did prefer this single CPE over 3 out of the 4 BHK52 that I've smoked. Hard to make a judgment on just one sample though. Time will tell...
Orion21 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Does anyone knows the box codes that would be considered part of the original release?
Puros Y Vino Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Does anyone knows the box codes that would be considered part of the original release? I can't say with 100% accuracy this code is OR but I did get my box from Czar pretty much upon their release. UPE JUN 12
Orion21 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Looks like MUR (Partagas) and UPE (Montecristo) have JUN dates. I would conclude they would qualify as OR, since I don't remember boxes from earlier than JUN, unless someone else can.

I'd like to hear to from people who regularly smoke the entire range. LOL. Look up in the thread...you have heard from people like that. How can you allege "mostly people who are unfamiliar with the roots of the cohiba line", etc.? It doesn't always have to be about "special". It's Cohiba tobaccos - there is the different curing process to that, granted. When it was announced about the CPE initially, and tasted initially at the Festival release, they were originally rolled with medio tempo like the BHK line, but it was announced that the MT leaf wouldn't be used in regular production. So, it's just the normal tobacco for other regular Cohiba stuff. But, the tobacco quality right now is phenomenal. And, sometimes, it's just all in a format. Cohiba had a few piramide releases over the years, but nothing regular. It's a format that many people love, and certain tobaccos just work so well with it. Sometimes, just that right characteristic of the tobacco blend and the format melds so well together that it's a hit, flavour wise.

Correct, MUR & UPE codes, Jun 2012 - that's what I've seen, otherwise heard, and bought as well.
