ramon_cojones Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 LOL. Look up in the thread...you have heard from people like that. How can you allege "mostly people who are unfamiliar with the roots of the cohiba line", etc.? It doesn't always have to be about "special". It's Cohiba tobaccos - there is the different curing process to that, granted. When it was announced about the CPE initially, and tasted initially at the Festival release, they were originally rolled with medio tempo like the BHK line, but it was announced that the MT leaf wouldn't be used in regular production. So, it's just the normal tobacco for other regular Cohiba stuff. But, the tobacco quality right now is phenomenal. And, sometimes, it's just all in a format. Cohiba had a few piramide releases over the years, but nothing regular. It's a format that many people love, and certain tobaccos just work so well with it. Sometimes, just that right characteristic of the tobacco blend and the format melds so well together that it's a hit, flavour wise. What's so funny? The core customer of the big dollar big hype cigars are not the ones I see smoking cces, lanceros, sig ivs, coros or linea clasica save for a select few in the daily smoke thread. All I see are bhks and 1966s. Is it ok to canvass more opinions?

All I see are bhks and 1966s. Is it ok to canvass more opinions? Absolutely. But you can't dismiss the opinions as stated above either. You said, "I'd like to hear to from people who regularly smoke the entire range." Some of us do, and have boxes from right across Cohiba's assortment (Linea Classica, Linea 1492, Maduro 5, BHK). And....even those as above, agree and disagree on different aspects. The thing that I was laughing as was your statement of "...I think the majority purchasing these cigars are mostly people who are unfamiliar with the roots of the cohiba line and are therefore the ones touting their pedigree..." That's a bold and somewhat harsh tone to assume, IMO, in my reading of how pen was put to paper there. IMO, it's a bit of a broad generalisation there, and it reeks of a reverse elitist behaviour that says that because something is a premium or uber-rare cigar, that those purchasing that particular stick don't know what they're doing, they're only buying it for it's esteem level, and aren't buying based on taste or other quality levels, etc., etc.

It was but a few posts and I stated early on it would be nice to hear more. Then it must be that you don't visit the daily smoke thread and pay attention to what people are smoking, that is what I based my opinion on as that is a good facsimile of what is going on in FOH, not in your head. Not quite sure why you took that last bit to heart as with other posts of mine but it could also mean there are a lot of novice smokers on the board who are subjected to the marketing power of newer cigars and therefore are unfamiliar with the laurels of the of classic cohibas if you interpret it the way I meant. I didn't think about that premium aspect and now that you mention I'd have to agree that these are not unlike rolexes to people who are not familiar with vacheron, glaschutte, jlc, etc. They are immediately perceived as the best due to price tag. Good point.

Good point. I also felt you were being dismissive, and felt you were basing that view on the comments in this thread. Since you were basing it on what is posted in the daily smokes, then perhaps it is warranted. That said, the CPE is an excellent cigar and a lot of experienced smokers have echoed that opinion here. I like variety so I keep some of everything on hand. I have smoked almost every Cohiba, except the expensive humidors, and the CPE is a top Cohiba and a bonus is that pricing has come down to a reasonable level now.
El Presidente Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Ramon_C HSA can hype as much as they like like but they can't dress a pig.... ie Monte Open. Nothing special (in terms of leaf) that I am aware of in the Cohiba Piramide Extra. The only thing special is the consistent care (construction and leaf quality) going into it currently . I am certainly not seeing that same care in Esplendidos, majority of CORO, Lancero etc.
ramon_cojones Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Care is important, lord knows how long that will last once they devote el laguito real estate to producing solely cpes. Seems we need to pay more and more for properly constructed cigars which is a shame.
mbrody Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I really like the CPE but am concerned about consistency. For me, it is the epitome of Linea classica with core Cohiba flavors that builds to a crescendo...rob, if you can pick a few boxes for me, to increase the % of a good box, I'm in!
jrb5783 Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Correct, MUR & UPE codes, Jun 2012 - that's what I've seen, otherwise heard, and bought as well. I have two boxes of UPE MAY 12 1
Neuralpath Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 The ones I've smoked smoked have been outstanding. Medium, complex, and a great cuban-tangy grassiness well withn the cohiba taste family. For me, the Behiikes are also outstanding and also have the Cohiba family taste profile. At their very best, their flavors seem a bit bolder and unique. In short, I think they're both wonderful. I'm personally not as enamored by the the Cohiba 1966, it's a very good cigar but owes much of its taste profile to the LE family-- slight maduro like. While enjoyable, for me the flavors are not as complex and a bit more monochromatic.
losttrailer Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 seen a Box of CPE this weekend with a AME DIC 11 boxcode at a reputable dealer. Never seen a '11 boxcode on those, somebody noticed '11 boxcodes on CPEs before ?
ChefBoyRG54 Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I've had a few, but only 2012s. The one I had from a 10ct was average at best, definitely didn't justify the price. The other 2 I've had are from tubos and both were excellent. Not sure if they justify price still, but a damn fine treat imo 2
CdnLimitada Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 The ones I have had are amazing. Not sure what my box codes are but if I want a real treat, this is one of the cigars I reach for. 1
