Bcrowell Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Does anyone have a great box from 2011 or 2012 that they would recommend?
canadianbeaver Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Save your money and buy something else.
IcedCanuck Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I picked up a box in Cuba with the following box code: USE FEB 2012 Every stick I have smoked from that box has been bang on.
tmac77 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Have not had a bad box of these yet. try LEM OCT 11
canadianbeaver Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Hey wait a minute... every thread has moaned and groaned about how bad these have been in the last 2 years.
tmac77 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Hey wait a minute... every thread has moaned and groaned about how bad these have been in the last 2 years. You will never hear me moaning about Monte 2's, or monte 4's either for that matter. Maybe I have just been lucky with boxes that I have had of these as neither have ever let me down.
Bcrowell Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 That's because really pissed of people talk more than happy people.
IcedCanuck Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 That's because really pissed of people talk more than happy people. You have a point there. People do not tend to rant about how awesome a cigar was as often as people will flip their lid over a bad one.
Colt45 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Not to go too far off track, personally I find it more beneficial to have someone willing to check the quality of the cigars themselves versus going strictly by box code.
Bcrowell Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 I agree. This is a one time credit deal.

Maybe I have just been lucky with boxes that I have had of these as neither have ever let me down. I've also never had a bad Monte 4. But I've only bought them from here.

We have another winner! I do the same & haven't had a less than stellar box of MC #1, 2 & 4 in many years.
mk05 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 That's because really pissed of people talk more than happy people. I believe people are speaking from actual experience, and you were the one asking for it. I, for one, agree with the negative sentiment re Monte 2, as I always have, and I'll explain why. The Monte 2 are always a crapshoot, leaning heavily on the crap part. Let's assume that Cuba rolls around 15m Monte 2 per year, but Partagas or La Corona can only roll, say, 10m per year - and they're not just rolling Monte's in there - you can quickly surmise how the production of Monte 2 is happening everywhere in order to fill annual demand. Do you think quality control is kept at all places? No. Just look at Behike's being rolled at Partagas; extra MT is left over at the end of the day, and that's just one factory. So you have all these factories trying to roll Monte 2's all day long. At this point, box codes don't matter, personal selection - imo - doesn't matter. It becomes a lottery, a crapshoot, of picking a box of random 25 singles rolled by a bunch of people. Do you feel lucky? And if you think you've had a good box of Monte 2 in the past however many years, I submit that you have never smoked a good Monte 2, ever. I'm sure the "pissed off people" already knew this, and maybe they'd give you better insight without your judgment. FWIW, if you're going Monte, I'd go and buy some Monte Especiales, Petit Edmundo, Monte 1/3.
Colt45 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 It becomes a lottery, a crapshoot, of picking a box of random 25 singles rolled by a bunch of people. I guess the same could apply to any cigars coming out of Cuba not rolled by a single or very small group of rollers with a proper supply of tobacco for the run. And if you think you've had a good box of Monte 2 in the past however many years, I submit that you have never smoked a good Monte 2, ever. Yeah, dummies! (I'm one of you - I can't recall having a bad one, though I obviously don't know what a good cigar tastes like.....)

Lisa-Don't believe everything you read Mk05-I'm dumbfounded by this statement.
canadianbeaver Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 These comments could be made about any cigar on this board I guess... A hand made treasure + personal preference + storage conditions etc etc... But the Monte 2 does seem to get the most flack, next to the 1999-2001 stuff.
Puros Y Vino Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I've had terrible luck with M2's. Out of the seven I've smoked from various boxes only two were enjoyable. And I mean 88 point enjoyable. I've had better luck with M4's. Some have been stellar. Good luck with your search.
brazoseagle Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Hey wait a minute... every thread has moaned and groaned about how bad these have been in the last 2 years. From 2010-present, I can honestly say I haven't had a bad one yet. All have been spectacular!
MnMWC Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I've had good boxes with SUB AGO 11 and OGA Nov 11 codes.
maverickdrinker Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I have a great box from 08 and I think I've smoked a few good monte 2s....
winelover Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I've had two boxes of mc2s in the last two years and have been very pleased with them. Perfect construction and smokes that consistently deliver. I love 'em and I don't even have the raved over dark and oily wrappers, mine ae colorado or even colorado claro and nit that oily either. Great smokes.
Bcrowell Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 The couple that I have smoked have been very light shade, but have been wonderful. I am attempting to get the darkest shade from Rob when he comes across them. I have to take what I get from my other order.
