El Presidente Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 He looked at me this morning and told me he had reached the end of his tether. No improvement to the paralysis of his hind legs after 10 days, he was wasting away both physically and mentally. One of the most beautiful things about Chesapeakes is that they will hold a conversation with you. This morning he went on for 30 seconds with his "woooooo...wooooo....wooooo..woooo" I asked him to try and load bear and I would give him a hand. Every day we try together. Today he looked at me and said no more. I sat down with him for an hour reminiscing and talking about the great days of retrieving in our beautiful country, the training, the playing cricket, learning how to get a cigar from the humidor, how he was a best mate to myself, my kids and my wife. I put him down shortly after, patting his head. Cheers mate.
brazoseagle Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Sorry Rob, i recently had to put mine to sleep. She was my on "constant" through the last 12 years. There are a lot of people in this world that will never understand the bond between a man and his dog. It's hard to say goodbye.
NMJoe Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Rob, This breaks my heart. I truly love animals, and especially dogs. It is always a difficult thing, but God shows us the way when the time is right for our friend to move on. I am very sad for you and I know how you are feeling. I am very, very sorry. Memories see us through. Joe
khamy Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 I'm so sorry to hear of Cohiba's passing, thank you for sharing that beautiful memory with us all...
hdryder Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Sorry to hear about Cohiba Rob. That is never an easy decision to make.
Fii28 Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Sorry to hear Cohiba had to leave you & your family, Rob. One of the hardest yet beautiful conversations is that between fur friend and human companion when the gates to Rainbow Bridge have opened and in their eyes they show they are ready to cross over & heal. My heartfelt wishes for you all to grieve peacefully with the memory of a magnificent friend forever etched in your hearts. Namaste x
anacostiakat Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Damn. Always tough. It isnt about us. It is about them. Very sad to hear of your loss Rob.
assassin Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Mate I know how you feel, I lost 2 dogs to old age earlier this year and it left a huge hole in my life. If its any consolation to hear a life goes on story I just aquired a Miniature Schnauser in the last couple of weeks she is an absolute joy to me---shes not a replacement just new! I hope when the time is right you too can find new joy.
PigFish Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Sorry mate. Heartbreaking story. Condolences to you and the family. -Ray

Warren Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Such a hard thing to have to do. I know because I've had to do it twice in the last few months. It always feels just like a death in the family. They are after all family, they love you and ask nothing in return. I'm so sorry Mate.
Erm310mce Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 So sorry to hear this Rob, best to you and your family.
Chaki Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Sad to hear, Rob At least he is not suffering anymore, he is fetching cigars from the big humidor up there
Duane Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Sorry to hear Rob, hate having to make that decision with our pets. Hope you wont be mourning the loss of a loved one, but rather celebrate with a cigar and scotch with the memories that cant be replaced that shall live on forever in your heart.
adic88 Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 My next cigar will be a Cohiba in his honor. Sorry for your loss, Rob.
almudawi Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Sorry to hear about cohiba mate. These things are never easy
